The Broome County STOP-DWI Program invites high school teams from across New York State to participate in this outstanding tournament which uses basketball as a tool to create a unique and exciting learning experience for youth. I N S I D E T H I S I S S U E 1 Amy Stock Memorial Trailer continued on page 4 On July 19, 2015, Amy Stock was killed by a drunk driver. Amy's sister, Eileen Anania, an Otsego County resident, worked with the Otsego County Sheriff and STOP-DWI to bring the demolished car to the county where she lives. In an effort to preserve the car, tell Amy's story and educate the public on the dangers of drinking and driving the STOP-DWI Amy Stock Memorial was created. To request the STOP-DWI Amy Stock memorial trailer at your event, please contact your local STOP-DWI office (visit: for quick access to coordinator contact information). 1 Broome County Winter Classic 2 William T. 2 ANNUAL NYS HIGHWAY SAFETY SYMPOSIUM Lake Placid October, 2016 The fall foliage was at its peak when we assembled in Lake Placid this year for the annual Highway Safety Symposium co-sponsored by NYS STOP-DWI Association, NYS Association of Traffic Safety Boards and the Governor s Traffic Safety Committee. We were dazzled by our keynote speaker, award-winning magician Steven Brundage who performed a wide array of illusions, mystery and enchantment. Steve s world-class mastery in sleight of hand, as well as his Rubik's cube was beyond entertaining. The application for traffic safety professionals was clear: things are not always what they seem and thinking out of the box, using entertaining techniques and partnering with people and agencies we may not have seen as allies are ingredients to success in any program. We also heard some very interesting concepts from Catherine McDonald, PhD, RN, Assistant Professor, University of Pennsylvania, School of Nursing - Perspectives in Teen Driving Safety: Roads We ve Traveled Over Time. More than 250 conference attendees spent four days attending workshops such as Prescription Drug Diversion, Judicial Intervention Strategies, Utilizing Social Media, Ignition Interlock-Roadmap to Higher Compliance, Teen Driver Inattention, Driving Simulators and Victim Advocates. Many other pertinent issues were discussed including Motorcycle Enforcement, DWI Dangers, Pedestrian Safety and the GTSC New Program Guidelines. The symposium also gives members an opportunity to hold business meetings and to have an informal exchange of ideas with those from around the state. Highlights included the William T. Smith II and Dorothy Smith Institute, sponsored by the STOP-DWI Foundation; Battle of the Belts, sponsored by the NYS Association of Traffic Safety Boards and Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement sponsored by the Governor s Traffic Safety Committee. Broome County STOP-DWI Coordinator, Chris Marion, Honored with William T. Smith Award NYS Highway Safety Symposium, Lake Placid October, 2016 Congratulations to Broome County STOP-DWI Coordinator, Chris Marion the 2016 recipient of the William T. Smith Award!! He also serves as the statewide STOP-DWI Foundation Chair. Chris is a very worthy recipient having contributed a great deal of time and energy to our education and training efforts, legislative agenda and the development of our mobile app Have a Plan. The William T. Smith Award was developed to honor Senator Smith for his dedication to the cause of the NYS STOP-DWI Coordinator s Association. The Smith Award will be a New York State STOP-DWI Coordinator s Association Award, not an award for recognition of local accomplishments. The guidelines to be included for selection consideration are that the person(s) be a member of the Association in good standing, or be directly involved in the daily operation of any county program, or be a consultant directly involved in the overall operation of the State Association business. The person(s) selected will have provided the State Association with time and effort, which will be judged as enhancing the cause of the Association in its daily and yearly business. Stay tuned for information regarding next year s conference. We are happy to announce we will be in Niagara Falls, October 15 18, Conference Committee Members are: Colleen Grebleski, Chemung; Suzanne Cirencione, Ontario; John Winchell, Washington and Chris Hale, Orange. Robert Richards is also participating since his county is hosting the conference. If you have any ideas for workshops or how to improve the conference please feel free to contact one of the committee members. Wishing everyone a productive and safe New Year!
