How to Use This Book Permission is granted with purchase to make as many copies as needed for your local unit only. Do not pass any copies on to other units - they are required to purchase their own books. Each copy should show the entire page, including copyright information. Making copies of copies or making copies for commercial gain is strictly prohibited. Enlargements or overheads may be made for use with larger groups. Any other use without specific written permission from the publisher constitutes an infringement of copyright. This book could be implemented in Primary, at home, or in any other situation for which it is appropriate. The theme has been coordinated with the themes to be used in a four-year rotation in the Primary organization of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the rotation is: Old Testament, New Testament, Book of Mormon, D&C & Church History). This book can be used anytime, but especially in years when the Valiants are studying the New Testament. Muggli Graphics and Glorianne Muggli Books are not affiliated with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; no book or program we publish is reviewed or endorsed by the Church. All contents of this book are for the purpose of giving ideas and suggestions only; decide for yourself through scripture study and prayer if you wish to use these materials, and if so, how you will implement them. We recommend checking with your local leaders if you wish. Do not cut out or color the pages in this book. Instead, copy the pages onto regular or heavyweight paper, either white or colored, and save the book to use again. If the project needs to be mounted, it can be glued onto heavy paper with regular glue or spray glue. If desired, cover figures with clear Contact paper or laminate. Usually when cutting items out, it is best to leave a narrow white margin all around. Prepare with flannel, magnets, or Velcro for use with flannelboard, magnet board, or Velcro board. In most cases, simple supplies are all you will need: scissors, crayons, markers, paste, and fasteners such as tape, stapler, brads, string, or yarn. To make an enlargement, use an opaque projector. If you don't have ready access to one, ask at a local school. Often it is possible to borrow an item or use it on the premises. Use a darkened room and back up to make the image larger, get closer to make smaller. Focus with the lens to sharpen the image. Project the image onto a large piece of paper such as posterboard and trace the image. Go over the lines later with markers or other media. You may have to use a ruler and/or Tsquare to get the lines straight. The best images to enlarge have sharp, clean, dark lines and shapes. Introduction: In order to become a Zion people, we must first become Zion families. When parents are aware of what their children are learning in Primary each Sunday, they can reinforce, support or enrich these concepts throughout the following week. Supplementing your child's primary experience will help you accomplish the family's goal to teach the gospel in your own home. When you share your child's primary experience, you strengthen your relationship with your child. By reinforcing what your child is learning, you strengthen their understanding of the gospel. For children ages 8 through 12, this year's study manual is Primary 7 with the scriptural base of the New Testament. The lesson number and title, main idea, and scripture references are given at the beginning of each activity for the lessons taught from Primary 7. At the end of each lesson in Primary 7 is a suggested home reading assignment. Those scriptures are emphasized with bold type. If the home reading assignment differs from the scriptures suggested for the teaching preparation the verse for home reading will be inserted within parentheses. For example in Lesson 5, the scripture reference is Luke 2:2152, but the suggested home reading review begins with verse 40 as indicated in parentheses: Luke 2:21(40)-52. Lesson one begins the first week of the Primary year and the lessons are taught consecutively. [It may be a good idea to periodically check with your child's teacher to make sure you're in sync with the lesson they are teaching that week.] 2

Learning Styles Children learn in many ways. Some children learn well by listening. For them, reading aloud and discussion are effective learning tools. Other children will comprehend and remember more when using their sense of sight. Visual aids enhance their learning experiences. Some children are tactile learners. They learn best when they are touching, holding or participating with their sense of touch. Kinesthetic learners need activity. Participation is a key part in their retention of ideas. As a parent, try to include or adapt ideas in this book for your child's best learning style. Of course, variety is good, too, but a kinesthetic learner may not retain as well through an auditory experience. As you ask questions or reinforce concepts try to involve activity, action and hands on experience that may not be possible in a Primary classroom setting. The more senses that are involved, the more both children and adults can remember. Of course, the person who learns most is the teacher. If a child can incorporate an idea well enough to teach someone else the concept, he will have learned well. If some activities are a little less mature than your 11 or 12 year old may enjoy, have them teach a younger sibling, friend, or neighbor. These activities are primarily intended to be used at home within the family: & & & & & in family home evening, during and after dinner discussion, for rainy days, during other planned activity times, or whenever a teaching moment can be captured. While the activities in this book are designed to reinforce specific lesson ideas, they can be used anytime a child raises a question or indicates a desire to learn. Capturing spontaneous teaching moments can be a parent's most difficult but most rewarding experience. 7 Lesson 1 - Becoming Familiar with the New Testament Introduction to the New Testament with encouragement to study the scriptures. 2 Timothy 3:1-7; 13(14)-17 MISSING PIECES Read and help your child memorize the Eighth Article of Faith. Photocopy the puzzle of the Bible that follows. Cut it apart and put all the pieces except one into an envelope. Give the envelope to your children and ask them to put it together. When they discover a missing piece, explain to them that this represents what is meant by "as far as it is translated correctly". Read 1 Nephi 13:28. Review with them how the Joseph Smith Translation came about through inspiration and revelation to Joseph Smith when he had questions as he read the scriptures. His inspired translation gives us a more complete picture and helps us put the piece back into the bible. The standard works, especially the Book of Mormon helps answer many things that are not fully covered in the Bible as we now have it. NEW TESTAMENT READING CHARTS Your family may want to read the New Testament during the course of the year. Photocopy one or more of the New Testament Reading Charts. You may want one for each member of the family or if you read together, one for the entire family. CHART 1: BOOKS OF THE NEW TESTAMENT This chart is marked as follows: & As you read a chapter, color in one square on the chart. & When you finish a book, color in that book along the top of the chart. CHART 2: BOOKSHELF Copy the pages of books. Tape or glue them end to end to give the appearance of being books lined up on a bookshelf. Display your row of books on a bulletin board, refrigerator front or book shelf. As each member of the family finishes a book within the New Testament, they can place a sticker or write their name on that particular book. (Use this shelf of books to memorize the order of the books of the New Testament.) CHART 3: A SNOWMAN CHART FOR YOUNG CHILDREN: Small children need recognition at more frequent intervals to accomplish a goal. For younger children, make some copies of the snowman. Cut up one copy to use as a pattern. Cut the hat from black construction paper, the scarf and gloves from colored paper scraps. For one week, concentrate on reading the scriptures every day. Glue one item onto the photocopy of the snowman for each day that you read: base, middle, head, hat, scarf, right glove, left glove. By the end of the week you should have a completed snowman. 5

Lesson 2 - Jesus Christ Volunteered to Be Our Savior In the premortal life Jesus volunteered to be our Savior. John 15:13; Hebrews 12:9; Revelation 12:7-9; D&C 93:21; Moses 4:1-4 Volunteers Items needed: Photocopy of the two charts that follow (Optional) Paper and pencil Raise your hand. Ask your children what it means to raise your hand. Give them clues until they discover that when we raise our hands we are generally volunteering to do something such as answer a question. Synonyms for volunteer are listed on a chart. (charitable, helping, unpaid, donated, for a good cause, missionary.) Make a list of all the people you know who are volunteers. They may include people who volunteer in the community, in politics, in schools, in hospitals, firemen, church members. They may not be aware of the many men and women in our communities who volunteer time and effort on their behalf or on the behalf of others. On the morning I planned to present this concept in sharing time, I went into the primary room to make some advance preparation. An 11 year old Valiant boy was setting up the chairs. I asked him if he did this alone every week or did other young men come to help him. It actually is an assignment given to our deacons quorum. He explained that he doesn't have to do it at all. He just does, because soon he will have the assignment, and he thought he might as well learn to do it now. Many people make our lives much easier and nicer because they volunteer. Point out that many things would not be financially or physically possible if it were not for people who were willing to volunteer. You may know personally of a specific project such as a natural disaster clean up, a political campaign or playground or neighborhood clean up project that would never have happened or been possible if it were not for volunteers. Discuss with them things they could do to volunteer that would help others. Perhaps you could plan a family service day where you volunteer at a local library, historical site, parks department, rest home or homeless shelter. Discuss the feelings of compassion and satisfaction that develop when you give or offer yourself in other's behalf. "Volunteer" when used as a verb means to offer ones self. (Chart follows, next page) In John 10:17, 18, Jesus said: 10

...I lay down my life, that I might take it again. No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father. Review the home reading scripture in bold type above. Discuss how Jesus offered himself without conditions. He said, "...thy will be done, and the glory be thine forever." NO STRINGS ATTACHED Items needed: A ball of string Scissors Ask for several volunteers. One person will just stand there as the other volunteers tie long strings to his ankles and his wrists. When they are finished hold the two left strings and the two right strings in your hands over their head as if manipulating a puppet. Ask "the puppet" if they would like to live on earth with someone telling them exactly what they could or could not do. Explain: Satan's offer to volunteer had strings attached. He would volunteer only if he received the honor. Jesus Christ did not attach strings to his offer. He did not say, "Only if you give me the honor, only if it is not painful, only if I can choose my friends, only if it isn't too hard, only if I can do it my way." He volunteered to follow His Father's plan, to do His Father's will.. If Jesus volunteered, what do you think he would expect us to do? 15 Lesson 3 - John the Baptist Prepared the Way for Jesus Christ They were foreordained to do an important part of Heavenly Father's work here on earth. Luke 1:5-25; 57-80; Matt. 3:1-6 and D&C 84: AIRPLANE CRASH? Several years ago while living in southern Utah, my husband had a reoccurring dream about an airplane disappearing into a tree covered mountain. He was bothered by it several times, but did not know what it meant. His only logical Conclusion was that there was going to be an airplane crash. A few years later we were living near Seattle, Washington. His employment changed and his new commute took him in the direction of SeaTac Airport. One day while driving to work, he recognized the scene: airplanes flying down behind a tree covered mountain. Except that these planes were landing at the airport, not crashing, as he had initially interpreted his dream. We came to realize, during our stay in that area, there were people living there we needed to know. These brothers and sisters in the gospel helped us take a new direction in our lives. Since moving to Oregon, with the Lord again leading us here, we've recognized many people whom we've needed to know. There are others, whom we've been able to help through our past experiences. It wasn't until we moved to the Northwest, and my husband saw what he thought was the plane crash of his dreams, that we recognized the hand of the Lord guiding us very specifically to places during our lives. He had prepared people to help us and prepared us to help others. That is why we must always be prayerful and follow the promptings of the Spirit. The Lord has a purpose for all of us. For some, such as John the Baptist, their purpose seems clear to us. Perhaps for them, in the beginning it was not that definite. We all must help build His kingdom on this earth. That means being examples as well as following the examples of those around us who will lead His children back to His presence. (You may have experiences of your own to share with your children about times you have recognized the Lord's hand in your life and known he had a direction and purpose for you to take.) The song, "I Will Follow God's Plan for Me", p. 164 from Children's Songbook, is particularly appropriate to this lesson. Lesson 4 - Jesus Christ Is the Son of Heavenly Father Additional Reading: Jesus Christ is the Only Begotten Son of God in the flesh. Matt. 1:18-25; Luke 1:26-38; 2:1-20 John 3:16-17; Alma 22:14; D&C 19:16-19 CHRISTMAS CARD ADVENT: THE BIRTH OF JESUS CHRIST This activity can also be used at Christmas time and can be presented in several ways. I collected pictures from Christmas cards over the years. I cut the main pictures or words into uniform squares of two different sizes. We put each picture into a felt holder. It forms a Christmas tree and also serves as an advent calendar for the 25 days leading to Christmas. For that reason I have drawn a set of pictures in two sizes and illustrate how they can be taped or glued to a poster board to form the Christmas tree pattern. The numbered scriptures below correspond with the numbered pictures. The pictures may then be colored and assembled in one evening presentation or as a Christmas advent. However, you may have a family artist who would enjoy drawing their own pictures to illustrate the scriptures. They may want to draw or color one picture each day and read the scripture each evening or present the entire reading at one time. 13

CITY OF BETHLEHEM 1. And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed... And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. (Luke 2:1-3) MARY & JOSEPH ON DONKEY 2. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David which is called Bethlehem;... to be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. (Luke 2:4-5) BABY IN MANGER 3. And so it was, that while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her first born son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. (Luke 2:6-7) SHEPHERD 4. And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. (Luke 2:8) ANGEL 5. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid... And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you;ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manager. (Luke 2: 9-12) MULTITUDE OF ANGELS 6. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. (Luke 2:13-14) MARY WITH ANGELS 7. This isn't the first time angels appeared in telling of Christ's birth, earlier this is what happened:...the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. And behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. (Luke 1:30-31) HIS NAME IS JESUS 8. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. (Luke 1:32-33) SHEPHERD GOING TO BETHLEHEM 9. Back in the fields at night:...it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us. (Luke 2:15) SHEPHERDS AT STABLE 10. And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child. (Luke 2:16-17) CHILD PRAYING 11. And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds. (Luke 2:18) MARY WITH BABY 12. But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart. (Luke 2:19) 14

WISE MEN FOLLOWING STAR 13. Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him....and lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. (Matt. 2: 1-2, 9-10) WISE MEN GIVING GIFTS 14. And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him; and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh. And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way. (Matt 2:11-12) JOSEPH & MARY & BABY TRAVELING 15. And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him. When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt: (Matt 2: 13-14) SCRIPTURES 16. We know of Jesus' birth from scriptures in the New Testament. These accounts we've read were written by his disciples who lived with him on earth. Other prophets who lived long before Jesus' birth knew of his coming to live on the earth. BETHLEHEM IN DISTANCE WITH STAR 17. In the Old Testament, Micah prophesied of the place of Christ's birth: But thou, Bethlehem... though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting. (Micah 5:2) MARY & BABY 18. The prophet Isaiah said:...the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. (Isaiah 7:14) CHRIST CHILD IN MANGER WITH ANIMALS 19. Isaiah also said of Jesus: For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder; and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. (Isaiah 9:6) MARY & BABY 20. In the Book of Mormon, Nephi tells us: Yea even six hundred years from the time that my father left Jerusalem, a prophet would the Lord God raise up among the Jews - even a Messiah, or, in other words, a Savior of the world. (1 Nephi 10:4) VISION OF MARY 21. While Nephi:...was caught away in the Spirit of the Lord...it came to pass that I saw the heavens open; and an angel came down and stood before me; and he said unto me: Nephi, what beholdest thou? And I said unto him: A virgin, most beautiful and fair above all other virgins... And he said unto me: Behold the virgin whom thou seest is the mother of the Son of God, after the manner of the flesh... And I looked and beheld the virgin again, bearing a child in her arms. And the angel said unto me: Behold the Lamb of God, yea, even the Son of the Eternal Father! (1 Nephi 1,14-15, 18, 20-21) MARY WITH BABY 22. The prophet Alma said: But behold, the Spirit hath said this much unto me, saying: Cry unto this people saying - Repent ye, and prepare the way of the Lord, and walk in his paths, which are straight; for behold, the kingdom of heaven is at hand, and the Son of God cometh upon the face of the earth. And behold, he shall be born of Mary, at Jerusalem which is the land of our forefathers, she being a virgin, a precious and chosen vessel, who shall be overshadowed and conceive by the power of the Holy Ghost, and bring forth a son, yea, even the Son of God. (Alma 7:9-10) 15

BRIGHT STAR 23. And now it came to pass that Samuel, the Lamanite, did prophesy... And behold, he said unto them: Behold, I give unto you a sign; for five years more cometh, and behold, then cometh the Son of God to redeem all those who shall believe on his name. And behold, this will I give unto you for a sign at the time of his coming; for behold, there shall be great lights in heaven, insomuch that in the night before he cometh there shall be no darkness, insomuch that it shall appear unto man as if it was day. Therefore, there shall be one day and a night and a day, as if it were one day and there were no night; and this shall be unto you for a sign; for ye shall know of the rising of the sun and also of its setting; therefore they shall know of a surety that there shall be two days and a night; nevertheless the night shall not be darkened; and it shall be the night before he is born. And behold there shall a new star arise, such as one as ye never have beheld; and this also shall be a sign unto you. And behold this is not all there shall be many signs and wonders in heaven. (Helaman 14:1-7) CHRIST CHILD 24. Modern day scripture in the Doctrine & Covenants testify: That he came into the world, even Jesus, (D&C 76:41) CHRIST - ADULT PICTURE 25. Jesus said:... I am the way, the truth, and the life; no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. (John 14:6) And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. (John 14:3) CHRISTMAS CARD ADVENT - layout

24 Lesson 5 - The Childhood of Jesus Christ Jesus' childhood. God provided witnesses to testify that Jesus Christ is his Son. Luke 2:21(40)-52; Matt. 2; the Joseph Smith Translation of Matt. 3:24-26; D&C 93:11-14 Now is the time to prepare... (Alma 34:32). Just as Jesus used his youth to prepare...and wax strong, and waited upon the Lord for the time of his ministry to come. (JST Matt. 3:24-26), our children need to use this time to prepare to fulfill missions and callings their future will bring. May I suggest this is a good time to review your child's progress in the following areas: GOSPEL IN ACTION Your child should have received a Gospel in Action card from the Primary Presidency around age 8. If not, ask your Primary President for one. It establishes five areas where your child can set and obtain goals: (1) Personal Area, (2) Family Area, (3) Church Area, (4) Community Area and (5) Articles of Faith. A simple incentive chart follows. Make two copies. Use one to cut patterns for the hats. Cut them out of different colors of construction paper. Embellish them as desired. With a roll of tape, place the hats across the bottom. As they complete each area they can place the hat on the rack. When all five hats are in place, they will have completed their Gospel in Action. ARTICLES OF FAITH Goal charting is a good growth indicator. Children enjoy seeing themselves progress and accomplish things. Most children like the satisfaction of checking things off. A chart for memorizing the Articles of Faith follows. If they have them memorized, use this chart for a review. Even the apostle, L. Tom Perry admitted to needing some review in his April 1998 conference address. 22

Lesson 6 - The Baptism of Jesus Christ Additional Reading: Keeping our baptismal covenants. Matt. 3:13-17; John 3:5; 2 Nephi 31:4-10; 17-21, Mosiah 18:8-17; D&C 33:15 John 1:29-34; D&C 20:37 WASHING CLEAN - PREPARES THE VESSEL Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. John 3:5 When you are baptized, you are being born of the water. Receiving the Holy Ghost into our lives is being born of the Spirit. One purpose of baptism is that it is a cleansing process. Our sins must not only be repented of, they must be washed away. The water when entered, of itself, does not wash away sin; but our obedience represented when we enter the water, does wash away our sins. After baptism we are clean. In the future, if we need to cleanse ourselves, we use the process of repentance. This time it is the atoning blood of Jesus Christ which washes us clean. Washing yourself clean through baptism prepares your body so the Holy Ghost can be with you. Being baptized by immersion is something everyone can see. It is a humble, outward sign you give Heavenly Father indicating your desire to come unto Christ, to accept the gospel and to willingly serve Him and others. Water begins the work of purifying you. It starts the process of cleaning your soul making a pure vessel. This is necessary to be prepared for another essential part of our baptism - the baptism by fire or the gift of the Holy Ghost. Joseph Smith said, "Baptism by water is but half a baptism, and is good for nothing without... the baptism of the Holy Ghost." (TPJS, p 314) This process of baptism by fire, or the Holy Spirit, is what ultimately sanctifies us. The Spirit baptism is essential to complete the process of purification. Unlike baptism - an outward sign - the Holy Ghost as it is received into our lives cannot be witnessed by others. It is personal, private and an ongoing process. The Holy Ghost continues to witness to us when our actions are accepted by our Heavenly Father. He continues to witness to us as we learn truth. Demonstrate this process of becoming completely clean with the process outlined below. COMPLETELY CLEAN Materials needed: Tomato sauce White Corn Syrup 1 paper towel for each person (Make a mixture of half tomato sauce and half corn syrup in a bowl - do not let your children see this process.) Show the mixture to your children. Tell them this sauce represents sins in our lives. Have them dip their hands into it. As they pull their hands out they can try to extract the extra sauce by squeezing their hands together. Give them a paper towel to wipe off the remaining sauce. (Even two paper towels do a poor job.) Ask: Do your hands feel completely clean? Do they still feel sticky or slick? Would you like to feel this way always? What else could you do to become completely clean? Would you like to wash your hands with soap and water? The Holy Ghost is like the soap and water. It continually sanctifies us and purifies us as we incorporate it into our lives. The sanctification (cleaning) process is not complete with only baptism (paper towel). We need the cleansing or sanctification of the baptism by fire - the gift of the Holy Ghost - in our lives. [This discussion can be further developed to include the fact that when we just say we are sorry, or just feel sorry without completely following all of the steps necessary for repentance, there is still a residue of sin left on us. We cannot have the Holy Ghost with us to sanctify or clean us if we do not fully repent of our sins.] 25

Lesson 7 - Jesus Christ Was Tempted by Satan Additional Reading: Resisting Satan's temptations Matt. 4:1-11, Mark 1:12-13, Luke 4: Corinthians 10:13; 2 Nephi 2:18; 28:19-22; 3 Nephi 18:18 and D&C 10:5, 27; 11:12 THE HARD WAY OR THE SMART WAY? This is a saying we have in our family, You can do this the hard way or the smart way. The hard way is to disobey and have a discipline imposed and then still have to do whatever it was that was asked of you. The smart way is to obey and avoid the discipline. For instance, if I ask someone to clean up the toys from the backyard, and they don't want to comply. I ask them if they want to do it the hard way or the smart way. The hard way being clean up the backyard and also sweep the deck or sidewalks; the smart way being to obey the original request and clean up the backyard. Because either way, they still have to do what they were originally asked to do. We can live life the hard way or the smart way. When Jesus was tempted by Satan he did it the smart way. He was in charge. He avoided the consequences by making right choices. The best way to live the smart way is by following someone else who knows what they are talking about. Let me tell you a story about stop signs. STOP SIGNS!!! Materials needed: Red construction paper Scissors Chalk Fold a piece of red construction paper in half once (holding the paper "landscape" direction), then fold half of each of these edges back in half again.. You should be able to trace the outline of the stop sign at least three times from top to bottom. Cut out the sign on the seven sides indicated. Do not cut on the folded (eighth) side. This makes a continuum of stop signs. Tape them together end to end to form a long line of stop signs. Write Stop in chalk on each sign. Use this as a visual aid while telling the story. One day, I had to deliver something to a client of my husband's. We were living in Utah and being a typical Utah town, the streets are laid out in blocks with most of the street intersections at right angles. There are Main and Center streets which divide the town into four sections. Streets begin at 100 in the town center and increase in number as they radiate out through the city. It is fairly easy to find an address when everything is laid out in blocks and numbered accordingly. However, the address I was looking for was in an unfamiliar area of town and around a college. This area deviated a little from the orderly pattern described above as subdivisions were included with their circles and cul-de-sacs. Because of my time schedule I didn't have any time to waste in getting from my home to the destination at the appointed time. I was aware of the main arteries used to navigate traffic through town, but decided to avoid these and simply take what I trusted, with my limited wisdom in this area, to be the most direct route - which was directly up the street with the number indicated as the southerly direction until I came to the street intersecting it with the closest easterly address. After I turned east on the south street, it soon became apparent I had made a mistake. On every corner was a stop sign and since I crossed several main roads with the busy college traffic and growing population of the town, I had some long waits at several corners. Hindsight being 20/20, the best way to get to my destination would have been to call ahead and get directions from someone who knew where I was going and had been there before. I could have taken the main streets to the college and simply followed a few turns here and there to find my destination. Unfortunately I was too timid to call, and I also felt confident that I knew what I was doing. Just as unfortunately, when I arrived, they had already left. I had to make other arrangements and another trip into town at a later time. Jesus Christ has shown us the way. He knows where we are going. He is following His father, who has also been where we need to be. The best way to navigate through any new or questionable situation is to ask for their help. They will always direct us in the right direction. They can help us avoid a lot of uncomfortable stops and restarts. They will help us do it FOLD 26

the smart way, not the hard way. Jesus showed us this by the way he rebuked Satan and refused to play by his rules. We can learn other lessons from his experience in the wilderness. When Satan came to tempt Jesus, he was already doing what he should be doing. He went into the wilderness to talk with God. Because of his fasting for forty days, he was in a weakened physical state as indicated by the fact that he was hungry. Those two times are when Satan will most likely strike (1) when you are trying to follow God and (2) when you find yourself in a weakened situation. We need to recognize Satan for what he is - a counterfeit of happiness and for who he is - a spirit without a body who would like to control us through our bodies. He also tempts us through power, importance or gain. All of which are temporary and counterfeits of what our Heavenly Father can bless us with if we are obedient to his commandments. And if he is able to trip us up, he is only too quick to make us feel that our failure is eternal, when in fact, it is temporary and can be overcome. Notice also, that after Satan failed he left, and it was then angels came and ministered unto Jesus. (Matt 4:11) Endurance may be the greatest test of life. Lesson 8 - Jesus Christ Cleanses the Temple Additional Reading: Love and respect for Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ and for sacred places. John 2:13-16; Matt 21:12-14; Luke 19:45-48 and Exodus 20:7 Mark 11:15-17 RECEIVING HONOR The temple of God is a sacred, holy place. It is a place to honor God and a place where God honors us. Jesus taught the Jews in John 5:44: How can ye believe, which receive honour (a) one of another, and seek not the honour (b) that cometh from God only? There are two footnotes in that verse. The first footnote (a) comes with the first word, "honour". This honor tells us of people who trusted in themselves or seek glory among men. The footnote (b), which appears by the word "honour" the second time it appears, refers us to the Topical Guide under the subject: God, the Standard of Righteousness. The verses following that subject heading point to men who are trying to be perfect, even as our Father (Matt. 5:48), those who are followers of Christ and do as they see him do (Eph. 5:1, 2 Nep. 31:12), those who are holy as the Lord is holy (Lev. 19:2), those who seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness (Matt. 6:33). The temple is a place where we receive the honor and blessings of God for our righteousness. It is proper for us to go to the temple to seek the honor of God; the confirmation that our lives are in keeping with his will. The money changers and merchants did not honor God in the temple, nor were they seeking God's honor. They had treated lightly what they had received. D&C 84:54, 57 says: And your minds in times past have been darkened because of unbelief, and because you have treated lightly the things you have received -- Which vanity and unbelief have brought the whole church under condemnation. And they shall remain under this condemnation until they repent and remember the new covenant,... which I have given them, not only to say, but to do according to that which I have written. Living righteous lives, receiving God's honor takes action on our part. TO DO When you come into a dark room, how do you make it light? You have TO DO something to bring the light into the room don't you? You have to flip a switch. To have the light of Christ in your life, you have to be thinking of Him. You must do something to bring Him into your life. You must try to be like Him.You choose what you do each day that darkens your mind or brings light into your own temple. (The Lord Gave Me a Temple, Children's Songbook, p. 153) Preparing for the temple does not begin a few days or weeks before your arrival there. You must start now to prepare for lives worthy of the honours 27

and blessings that await you there. Photocopy and use the form that follows to make a weekly, monthly or yearly TO DO list of the things that you can do to be worthy of going to the temple. You can form a notepad by making multiple copies, cutting the pages in half, clamping the top edge tightly together with c-clamps or clothes pins or placing heavy books on top. Then brush a thin coat of a thicktype glue, such as wood glue along the top edge. Let dry. Apply a second coat. What Would Jesus Want Me What Would Jesus Want Me TO DO? TO DO? Remember the new covenant, which I have given [you], not only to say, but TO DO according to that which I have written -D&C 84:57...Remember the new covenant, which I have given [you], not only to say, but TO DO according to that which I have written -D&C 84:57 Lesson 9 - Jesus Christ Calls His Apostles Additional reading: Love and respect for the Apostles Jesus Christ calls to be his special witnesses. Matt. 4:18-22; Luke 5:1-11; 6:12-16; Matt. 16:13-19; Mark 3:13-19, 16:15; Acts 10:39-43, 3 Nephi 12:1-2 and D&C 107:23 Matt. 10:2-4; Mark 1:16-20 and John 1:35-51 PRESENT APOSTLES Materials Needed: Photocopy of the General Authorities chart from May or November Ensign Photocopy of the Bingo chart which follows Scissors, glue ACTIVITY #1 This lesson will be taught approximately four weeks before the April General Conference. Obtain a current chart of the General Authorities showing the first Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. These can be found in the May and November Ensigns, the Church News following conference week, or can be ordered from Church Distribution. Copy the section of the chart with their pictures. Cut each picture out and glue them into a square on the following chart. You can either glue them in order of seniority or mix them up. [OR you can simply write the names of the Apostles and First Presidency in the squares.] Have your children review the pictures and their names over the next several weeks. During the General Conference sessions, this chart can be used like a Bingo card. As they see and identify the speaker on their card, they can circle that apostle. As they hear the words in the ten spaces, they circle those, too. See if they can get five circled boxes in a row. Have them especially listen for their testimonies or witness of Jesus Christ, as is their special calling as Apostles. 28

ACTIVITY #2 Using the last Conference report from the May or November Ensign, review the apostle and first presidency addresses. Underline a short story or thought provoking paragraph. Then have the children take turns choosing an apostle from their pictures on the General Authorities chart in the middle of the Ensign. Turn to the address given by that apostle. Read and briefly discuss the message and how it relates to them. 32 Lesson 10 - The Sermon on the Mount Additional reading: Becoming more like Jesus by following his teachings in the Sermon on the Mount. Matt. 5:1(3)-(11), 6:1-4 and 7:12 Luke 6:17-36 and 3 Nephi 12 THE REST OF THE SCRIPTURE Materials needed: Photocopies Exacto knife Tape or glue This is a good time to testify of the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon. Begin by talking of at least two of your children's (or relative's) futures. Tell them that if one child grows up and remains close to home while they raise their family, you will certainly share the joys and challenges of life you both experience. Tell them that if the other child grows up and moves far away, that even though there is great distance between you, it will not keep you from sharing the important events in both your families' lives. Jesus Christ communicated the same teachings given on the Sermon on the Mount to the Nephite people. He told the Jews in John 10:16: And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd. He repeated this same scripture to the Nephites when he appeared to them. See 3 Nephi 15:17. The lesson manual Enrichment Activity 7 suggests comparing Matthew 5:3,6,10, and 48 with 3 Nephi 12:3,6,10, and 48. TO PREPARE THE GAME: Photo copy the Category Point Value page and Answer Sheet. Cut down the two sides and across the bottom of each square on the Category Point Value page. This forms a flap to be lifted to check the answers underneath. Line up the answers and glue or tape this page on top of the Answer Sheet around the edges. TO PLAY THE GAME: It is played much like the popular TV game show. A player chooses a category and a point value. The Host reads part of the scripture phrase given on the Categories Question Sheet. The player answers and phrases his reply in a question, i.e.: "What is?" and gives the missing part or counterpart of the scripture. (Answers can be checked by lifting the tab and reading it under the point values). 30

Matt. 6:5-(8)13 (note the Joseph Smith Translation in footnote [a] of verse 13); 7:7-11, and Alma 34:19-27 Matt. 4:2, particularly footnote c; 14:23; 26:36-46; Luke 9:28-29; 11:2-4, 9-13; John 17; 3 Nephi 14:7-12; 17:14-21; 18:16

TAUGHT BY EXAMPLE Look up the following scripture verses illustrating prayers Jesus gave. Then fill in the needed letters to discover what Jesus taught about how often we would pray. 1. Matt 26:36 Eighth word, first letter 2. Luke 11:2-4 Second letter, of the word representing something we eat 3. Matt 14:23 First word, first letter 4. Alma 34:19 First word, first letter 5. Matt. 6:9-13 Thirteenth word, double letters (use only once) 6. Luke 9:28-29 Third to the last word, first letter 7. 3 Nephi 14:7-12 Ninth word, first letter (Luke 21:36) Lesson 12 - The House Built on a Rock Additional reading: Desire to obey the commandments so that Jesus Christ and his gospel will be the sure foundation in our life. Matt. 7:24-27; Luke 6:47-49 and D&C 11:24 Helaman 5:12 and 3 Nephi 14:24-27 STARTING OFF RIGHT Make one photocopy of the maze for each person. Have your children pick one beginning point of the four options given. Place the paper in front of them so that they can read the word Gate. (If they want to challenge themselves, they may try following more than one course at the same time, turning their papers back and forth, after they follow each direction.) Read the directions. The objective is to be the first to get to the "X" in the center of the maze. Turn the paper as you play the game - directions are taken as if you were driving a car, always facing ahead and traveling one block at a time. See Answer Pages for solution Go straight through the gate across the perimeter (outside) path. Stop at the first available turning point. Go counterclockwise around the block coming back to the entry. Continue straight ahead, following the perimeter path. At the first diagonal path you come to, follow it. Turn to the left. Go straight to the first "T" intersection. Go right to the next "T" intersection. Go left one block. [if you can] Turn right and go straight ahead. At instruction nine Gates 1, 2 and 4 cannot turn left. Gate 3 arrives at the X with step 10. There is only one beginning that successfully negotiates to the center of the maze. Where you begin in this game determines where you end up. Talk about where or if they arrived at the center. If they tried two courses discuss what it was like to try to go travel two paths at once. 33

To develop a strong testimony - one that will withstand tests and temptations, one that will get you where you want to go - you must build upon a sure foundation. You must start out on the right path to end up at the right place. We may do many good things in our lives, but to be traveling along the right path, we have to develop a testimony of Jesus Christ. We can do this by searching the scriptures, praying and exercising our faith at every turn in the road. You may want to read the following scriptures that tell us the one true way toward our eternal salvation. Mosiah 3:17...there shall be no other name given nor any other way nor means whereby salvation can come unto the children of men, only in and through the name of Christ, 2 Nephi 9:41...Behold, the way for man is narrow, but it lieth in a straight course before him, and the keeper of the gate is the Holy One of Israel; and he employeth no servant there; and there is none other way save it be by the gate; Matt. 6:24 No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. Starting Off Right See Answer Pages for solution. 34
