1 St John the Evangelist, Kingston Sunday 5 th November 2017 All Saints Welcome to anyone who is new to St John s. Hymn Sing for God s glory that colours the dawn of creation, racing across the sky, trailing bright clouds of elation; sun of delight succeeds the velvet of night, warming the earth s exultation. Sing for God s power that shatters the chains that would hold us, searing the bleakness of fear and despair that would mould us, touching our shame with love that will not lay blame, reaching out gently to find us.

2 Sing for God s saints who have travelled faith s journey before us, who in our weariness give us their hope to restore us; in them we see the new creation to be, spirit of love made flesh for us. 3 We say sorry : One of the hallmarks of the lives of saints is that they were people of prayer and people of change. They realized that following Jesus meant living differently, and being sorry for the things that were wrong in their lives. We are also taking time now to say sorry to God for those things in our lives that have hurt other people and hurt God. Voice Holy God, you call us to be people of prayer, but we forget to turn to you. Lord, have mercy, All Lord, have mercy. Voice Holy God, you call us to be people who serve, but we forget the needs of others. Christ, have mercy, All Christ, have mercy. Voice Holy God, you call us to be people of worship, but we forget to sing your praise. Lord, have mercy, All Lord, have mercy. Voice Holy God, you call us to be people who love, but we forget to love you and each other. Christ, have mercy, All Christ, have mercy. May God our Father forgive you your sins and bring you to the fellowship of his table with his saints for ever. Amen.

4 Collect: Holy God, across the years we hear your saints, we see their faith and hear their words as they proclaim your love; show us how to live like them, with hearts of joy and words of hope, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen Reading Matthew Jesus saw the crowds and went up a hill, where he sat down. His disciples gathered around him, and he began to teach them: Happy are those who know they are spiritually poor; the Kingdom of heaven belongs to them! Happy are those who mourn; God will comfort them! Happy are those who are humble; they will receive what God has promised! Happy are those whose greatest desire is to do what God requires; God will satisfy them fully! Happy are those who are merciful to others; God will be merciful to them! Happy are the pure in heart; they will see God! Happy are those who work for peace; God will call them his children! Happy are those who are persecuted because they do what God requires; the Kingdom of heaven belongs to them! Happy are you when people insult you and persecute you and tell all kinds of evil lies against you because you are my followers. Be happy and glad, for a great reward is kept for you in heaven. 6 Prayers The Peace All God makes peace within us let us claim it. God makes peace between us let us share it. The peace of the Lord be always with you And also with you. Let us offer one another a sign of peace. Most people here greet each other with a handshake. Offertory Hymn the bread and wine are brought to the altar. The Eucharistic Prayer : All: : All: : All: The Lord is here His Spirit is with us. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give thanks and praise. Lord of all life, you created the universe, where all living things reflect your glory. You give us this great and beautiful earth, to discover and to cherish. You give us happy times and things to celebrate. In these we taste your kingdom, a feast for all your children. You made us all, each wonderfully different, to join with the angels and sing your praise: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. 8 We thank you, loving Father, because, when we turned away, you sent Jesus, your Son. He gave his life for us on the cross and shows us the way to live. Send your Holy Spirit that these gifts of bread and wine may be for us Christ's body and his blood. On the night before he died, when darkness had fallen, Jesus took bread. He gave thanks, broke it, and shared it with his disciples, saying: 'This is my body, given for you. Do this to remember me.' After they had eaten, he took the cup of wine, gave thanks, and shared it with his disciples, saying: 'This is my blood, poured out for you and for many, for the forgiveness of sins.' So Father, with this bread and this cup we celebrate his love, his death, his risen life. As you feed us with these gifts, send your Holy Spirit, and change us more and more to be like Jesus our Saviour. Help us, Father, to love one another, as we look forward to that day when suffering is ended, and all creation is gathered in your loving arms. And now with Mary, John the Evangelist and all your saints we give you glory, through Jesus Christ, in the strength of the Spirit, today and forever. Amen. We sit or kneel. The Breaking of the Bread All We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, Because we all share in one bread. The Giving of Communion Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for you, and his blood which he shed for you. Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving. The Communion Everyone is invited to gather around the altar to receive communion or a blessing. The sidespeople will direct you. The Post Communion Prayer Lord, we have broken your bread and received your life. By the power of your Spirit keep us always in your love; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
