Diana Foederer & Library Staff Deadline: Lake Views and News May 30th Diana Foederer, Editor (828) soldonbeaches@charter.net Easter at Lake Junaluska The President s Pen..Paul Young Recognizing Larry Roberts May marks the transition to Summer programs/ activities at Lake Junaluska. The Seventh Day Adventist Conference is our first large gathering. This Conference also marks the beginning of the season for our tent committee, and I cannot think of the tent committee without thinking of Larry Roberts. No one at Lake Junaluska is more identified with this ministry than Larry. He started with the committee around 2002 and in 2004 assumed the responsibility of loading the tents on his pickup and delivering them to the sites. Then, when they were taken down, he would haul them back for storage. Several years ago, when he had health problems he gave up this task and turned it over to Bill Edwards, and now our chairman Jay Langford. In the early years when there was only one tent, they did not make much money but over the years more tents were purchased and the income increased. We now have four tents that produce between $2,000 $3,000 each year. The total income from tents in 2016 was $2950. The income is used where needed for various activities. Larry is in charge of scheduling when and where tents are to be erected; sending out s to committee members to see who can work and he deals with the frustration of us not responding as we should. I don t know the year he assumed this responsibility, but he was doing it when Laura and I moved here in January Many wonderful workers have been a part of the tent ministry since its beginning, but no one has done more toward its success than Larry Roberts. Thank you Larry for all the years you have given, and continue to give, to the tent ministry. Junaluskans Dinner Tuesday, May 16th 5:30PM Terrace Hotel Entertainment for our monthly dinner will be provided by an instrumental trio consisting of Tim Hedrick playing saxophone and clarinet, wife Carmella playing the flute and Charlotte Maness on keyboard. The three play in churches and for special occasions around Stanly County and the surrounding area. Tim has an extensive background in teaching and band directing befor retiring from Albermarle High School after 26 years. Carmella was a teacher of band, chorus and guitar in elementary education before becoming Choral Director, colorguard Coordinator and Assistant Band Director at Albemarle High School. She currently teaches at Stanly Community College, and has directed musicals. She continues the music ministry at Central Church with the trio. The third person in this trio is Charlotte Freeman Maness. She has enjoyed a long and diverse career in banking. After retiring, she traveled th many parts of the world. As a musician, she served as organist for Central United Methodist Church in Albemarie for 34 years. After retirement she has kept busy with her music ministry. These three bring a variety of musical backgrounds and award winning talents. You won t want to miss this as they should be very entertaining.

2 Page 2 APW Jack******************************************** This n That When visitors come, I always eat too much, then regret my actions after they leave and I look at the scale. Then it s time for my preferred diet lunch: Fruit on the bottom yogurt topped with granola, a sliced apple that doubles as a yogurt scoop, a handful of trail mix my favorite is mixed nuts and dried craisins, and iced water with no lemon. As I eat each bite I sometimes think about what I would prefer to be eating: a Blue Rooster burger that ll be my reward after shedding what I call my mountain visitor weight. Meanwhile, I m paying the piper for my excesses. Which reminds me of a topic about payment and preferences at the Public Works office Our Preference. Paying Your Monthly Bill By Bank Draft, Also Called ACH Jack Carlisle The Public Works office offers many ways for you to pay your monthly water, sewer, garbage and fire bill. We gladly accept payment by check, credit card online, and credit card over the phone. And we will continue to do so. But there is one additional way to pay your monthly Public Works bill. It s our preference because it saves money and eliminates potential errors. You may already be using it to pay us or other monthly bills for your household. It s called automatic bank draft, also referred to as ACH. Here s how it works. You get ACH set up through the Public Works office. Around the 10 th of each month, your bank account automatically pays Public Works bank account the exact amount of your monthly bill. And, that payment is automatically recorded to your account. No hands touch the transaction at your bank or at our office. No hands record that payment on your account at Public Works. It costs you nothing. It costs us nothing. Signing up for ACH payment is easy. All we need is information printed on the bottom of your check the bank routing number and your account number. One other note about another form of payment. We ve eliminated the option of paying by the use of an automated phone call option. It was an experiment when we expanded bill payment options. It was costing us for the use of the system, plus the cost of processing each credit card payment. Just 4-5 persons a month were using it. That option is no longer in service. We are always looking at ways to better serve our customers and keep costs down at Public Works. Every dollar saved becomes available to invest in updating our infrastructure. Have You Seen Those Crosswalks? JUNALUSKANS BOOK REVIEW FOR MAY Dr. Joseph Reiff will be the reviewer for the Book Review on May 17, at 10 a.m. in the Susan Todd Lounge. He will be reviewing his book, Born of Conviction: White Methodists and Mississippi s Closed Society. The book relates the stories of 28 Methodist pastors who signed a manifesto in 1963 that was published in the Mississippi Methodist Advocate. Dr. Reiff, a member of the Mississippi Conference of the United Methodist Church, currently is Professor of Religion and Chair of the Department of Religion at Emory & Henry College in Abingdon, Virginia. His parents, Lee and Gerry Reiff, were residents of Lake Junaluska for more than 20 years. Join us for an interesting review and discussion. The Book Review Committee Think Fellowship Groups The Junaluskans offer this unique community-building opportunity to all members. Consider being a part of this small-group program to meet new friends and build on old friendships. The process of creating Fellowship Groups for September 2017 through May 2019 has begun! Each existing group should have information forms available for each member. If you are a group coordinator and you haven t received your forms yet, please call ( ) or me (coghilln@gmail.com). If you are new to the Junaluskans or have not been participating in a group, pick up a form at the May Junaluskan meeting or give me a call. Groups gather for a meal and fellowship once each month. Nancy Coghill, Fellowship Group Committee Lake Beautification Day a Success More than 60 volunteers gathered to help beautify Lake Junaluska on April 10. Volunteers planted around 120 plants, picked up 45 bags of trash, cleaned 40 signs and painted 592 feet of guard rail! A big thank you to all of our volunteers your work had a huge impact on the areas around Lake Junaluska. Vespers May 21st 5PM Harrell Center REMINDER..Vespers worship is the 3 rd Sunday in May the 21 st at 5pm in the Harrell Center. After a summer hiatus, Vespers worship returns Sunday September 10. Our May faith sharer is David Rawles. Dave earned his undergraduate degree from California State University, Long Beach and his graduate degree in business from Lake Forest University. After retiring from a 26 year career with GTE, Dave co -founded CareerSolutions Job seeker ministry and authored Finding a Job God s Way. Dave loves hosting his Christian talk radio show broadcast from Dallas (or Lake Junaluska) and encouraging listeners as they seek career transition and success. Dave and his wife Fran split their time between homes in Bedford,Tx and on Francis Asbury here at Lake Junaluska. Please plan to join us May 21 as Dave shares his faith journey.

3 Page 3 Jack Ewing..Executive Director s Column Celebrating One of Our Greatest Blessings We speak often here at Lake Junaluska of our two greatest assets our location with our lovely lake and mountains and our people. It s easy to see that we have a lot going for us here. You simply can t replicate the beauty, serenity, and sacred history of this place. On April 13 we had the opportunity to gather to celebrate one very special group of our people that help to make all of that possible, our volunteers. We look forward every year to the Volunteer Breakfast because it gives us a chance to serve these servants of God, even if it is only for an hour two. The room is always full of a warm welcoming energy that has very little to do with the promise of hot breakfast and coffee and everything to do with how special this particular group is. The sense of community and comradery is palpable as we gather to celebrate a year of work well done and make commitments for the year ahead. This year s breakfast featured a devotion led by Rev. Mitzi Johnson, our new Director of Programming, which focused on Mark 1:16-28 where Jesus calls not just the fishermen, but the net menders as well to join him in ministry. Our volunteers are our net menders, doing important work behind the scenes that, at its best, goes unnoticed by our guests as they enjoy the undisturbed serenity of this place. Peggy Ledbetter spoke on behalf of the staff to thank the volunteers for their tireless work, and Diana Foederer and Don Rankin shared about what they have gained as volunteers and what it means to them. There really is no other group in the world like our volunteers. They give their time and energy to every aspect of Lake Junaluska from Lake Beautification Day, to greeting and seating guests at concerts, to committing to keep the planting beds weed-free for the entire growing season, to filling in at the front desk in the Administration Building, to the gargantuan task of decorating the grounds for Christmas, and everything in between. These dedicated people are more than an asset, they are a blessing. And what a blessing it is to be surrounded by such a giving, caring community that has taken the Conference Center s mission of Christian hospitality as its own and gives so selflessly of its time and talents to work toward the fulfillment of that mission. We are truly, deeply thankful for all that our volunteers give both as individuals and as a group through the Junaluskans. The Volunteer Breakfast may be only once a year, but we are grateful every day for your service. Live & Learn May 18th 2:00PM This month s Live and Learn program is a presentation on the Junaluska Biblical Garden. Sarah Tippett and Margaret McCleskey will reveal exciting new and additional features projected for the garden. The Biblical Garden transformed a plot of fill dirt into a lovely space to the left of the Welcome Center entrance. The garden gives purpose to the location: to inspire and educate visitors in a contemplative setting. Scripture tells that in the beginning God created a garden. Come and enjoy a time to grow your awareness and appreciation of this Junaluska feature. Margaret McClesky Sara Tippett in Israel Volunteer Breakfast: Lake Junaluska held a breakfast recently to honor more than 100 volunteers who help out throughout the year. We want to show our gratitude for the people who work behind the scenes to make Lake Junaluska a place where you experience transformation, said Jack Ewing, the executive director of Lake Junaluska. There are many unique things about Lake Junaluska, but one of the most unique is the number of volunteers and the number of hours that they give. This community is amazing.. (pictured Daphne Chapman & Pat Koonts) Do you think these women, dressed in their best, including hats, might be leaving Sunset Inn after having tea with other ladies of the Lake Junaluska community? Sounds like a good theory to me. Elaborate teas have been significant affairs at the lake since the founding of the Junaluska Woman s Club in Minutes of the early sessions of the club give us a glimpse of club get-togethers, usually mentioning that delicious refreshments were served. On July 1, 1927, "The hostess served ice tea, sandwiches, and toasted marshmallows on saltines." Toasted marshmallows on saltines? Hmmm. On June 18, 1929, the "most delicious ices were served, compliments of Biltmore Dairy." Ice cream sodas were served on July 29, 1941 and on July 22, 1947, the hostess offered "tall, cool drinks with assorted cookies." Delicious refreshments will be served again at the current club s June 12 Centennial Tea Celebrating 100 Years of Memories. This old fashioned tea party at Sunset Inn (once known as Atkins Cottage) will launch the Junaluska Woman s Club s 100 th year. Atkins Cottage, one of the early homes built at the lake, was the home of Bishop James Atkins, a principal founder of the Southern Assembly. The building was leased in 1914 for use as a boardinghouse as Atkins already had a house nearby in his hometown of Waynesville. The original Atkins Cottage is known today as Sunset Inn; its ambiance remains true to its original state. Sunset was chosen for the Centennial tea because of the Inn s prolific history at Lake Junaluska. Members attending the 2017 tea will probably not be decked out in the finery we see in this historic photograph, but all are invited to come and enjoy some delicious refreshments! Don your hat and gloves, (optional) and join us at historic Sunset Inn on Monday, June 12 at 3 p.m. for an old fashioned Junaluska Woman s Club celebration. All women who love Lake Junaluska are invited to become members as the club embarks on the celebration commemorating the Junaluska Woman s Club s illustrious yesteryears and launches the club s journey into the future. P.S. Please bring wrapped candy to this meeting for sharing at the July 4 parade. Marie Metcalf

At the Junaluskans Flea Market bake sale last year, several people were asking for healthy baked goods and we like to please our customers. Dianne Goodgame and I co-chair the bake sale and neither of us knows how to make healthy baked goods! So-o-o-o we re asking for your help. As you plan all the goodies you are going to donate to the bake sale at the Junaluskans Flea Market on June 10, please try to add some healthy baked goods. I m sure some of you bake healthy breads and rolls and maybe you would consider some healthy cookies, cakes & pies. But a lot of folks still want old favorites think cinnamon rolls right out of the oven, chocolate chip cookies that melt in your mouth, homemade pound cake ready for fresh strawberries and a dab of whipped cream. So we need those also for the sale. If you are willing to help with baking, help set up, help at the Flea Market, help with cleanup or help with all the above, please call or Dianne Goodgame, , dfgoodgame@gmail.com, or Marie Metcalf, , metcalfmarie@bellsouth.net. (Pictured Tomas Crenshaw) Tuscola Garden Club The Tuscola Garden Club will meet briefly at 9:30 a.m. On Tuesday, May 16th at the Bethea Welcome Center s Biblical Garden to install several newly elected officers for the upcoming year.
