You are truly the elves who make the spirit of Christmas at Lake Junaluska come alive. The take-down will happen the first week in January more details later. Pat and Don Rankin Deadline: Lake Views and News January 30, 2018 Diana Foederer, Editor (828) soldonbeaches@charter.net The President s Pen Paul Young TRANSITIONS LOOKING BACK MOVING FORWARD January seems like a good time to reflect on the past and look forward to the future. The subject of the reflection is a place we love called Lake Junaluska. The greatest period of church activities for Lake Junaluska in my lifetime appears to have been in the 1950s 1980s. I went to the Heritage Center and Nancy Watkins provided me with programs from the 1950s to the present. It was interesting because the programs/activities are reflective of what churches in the Southeast were doing. Youth Conferences attracted large numbers; Christian Education Labs for children workers and adult teachers were offered, along with other programs related to Christian Education. Ministers Week and Laity Conferences were popular with participants throughout the Southeastern Jurisdiction. It was a wonderful way to connect with others and to learn from each other. The numbers and scope of church programming was rather impressive. I must assume Lake Junaluska was known in most all the Southeastern Jurisdiction because I knew about it and came from a rural church in Mississippi. Lake Junaluska was the mecca of our Jurisdiction and we were thrilled to come here. It is also the reason so many of us chose to retire here. That day and time is no more. It is history. Times/culture has changed. The church and types of programs it is interested in have changed. Junaluska did not stop offering so many of the programs because they wanted to. They stopped because attendance no longer justified having them. History is a good teacher in telling us that times and expectations are always in flux. When Laura and I moved here fulltime in January 2009, I encountered only one major surprise talk about how things used to be. I realize old folks are prone to talk about the good ole days/times. Nostalgia is a powerful opiate. I had discovered that disease among some lay persons in churches. I didn t know until I moved here that clergy had a worse case of it. Reflections on the past can be good but only when we use them to prepare for the future. Change requires new visions, new models, new ways of doing ministry. If we can t move beyond how things used to be we will wither and die. Moving forward: In my opinion, the original purpose for which Lake Junaluska was established is greatly diminished. We are no longer the great gathering place, the mecca for Methodist of the Southeastern Jurisdiction. Churches in the Southeastern Jurisdiction no longer support Junaluska by every means possible. Happy New Year Membership Announcement Yes, we will have a Junaluskan Picture Directory for It will need your picture, which will be taken by a professional photographer. Appointments will be during the Holston Conference, Western North Carolina Conference, and time before the 4th of July, Sat.Jun 30-July 3 and some time after the 4th, July 5,6,7, 8. Just in case we've missed anyone we will able be taking pictures during the Associates Weekend, Aug 2,3,4 and 5. If we all show up, the 3 ring binder and directory will be available before any of our neighbors go to warmer weather. Extra pluses: if you have any family members visiting you and they wish to have their photo taken, its possible. If you have a favorite dog that you would like to pose with, it can be done. There is even a chance that it may be available to have on your computer, laptop or mobile phone. Get ready to smile and let others enjoy you good looks. The committee that is working on this has Tammy Cox, Bob Hunter, Don Keck, Judy Starnes, Theresa Leatherwood, Daphne Chapman, Ed Russell and Jay Langford working together. Watch for more details coming. Don Keck, Chairman

2 Page 2 This n That.. from APW Jack It was an emotional battle. I lost. Over a recent Lambuth Sunday Brunch with the goal in mind of fewer calories, I started with vegetable soup. I went hearty, with a loaded scoop from the bottom of the crock pot to get lots of the good stuff. Then I grabbed a dinner plate and moved over to the salad line. My route started with a base of lettuce, topped around the edges with tomato, a couple scoops of broccoli salad (which doubles as the dressing) and a few green peppers. I then trekked over to the entrée line for two carved slices of brisket, cooked to perfection, placed over the top of the salad bed. Jack Carlisle, APW It was a beautiful presentation. I was feeling proud, yet torn. Only a few feet away was the dessert table, calling to me. Before I left the dining room, I succumbed to temptation. And to think that I had just said the Lord s Prayer the hour before during worship. It was the tastiest, freshly prepared caramel cheesecake this side of heaven. I rationalized that if I didn t eat my piece of cheesecake it might be thrown out as waste which got me thinking about waste which brought me to a reminder about a change this month for all of us Why Is My Garbage Bill Only $10 This Month? You may notice that your January Public Works bill has gone down by $6.86 this month. There s a $10 charge instead of a $16.86 charge for garbage. It s not an error. It s a change that more closely approximates the cost of providing once-a-week curbside pickup of garbage and recycle service. What the lower monthly $10 charge does not include is the cost of providing pickup of brush, leaves and curbside service of household items. Paying for that service will be reflected with a 3.5 cent-per-$100-value increase in this December s Service Charge, to be reflected in the billing at the end of It s a change that has been a part of Community Council and the Trustee s Assembly Public Works Committee meeting discussions, recommended by each group. It s a change that was approved by the Lake Junaluska Assembly Board of Trustees in October. For most home owners, the costs overall come out about the same. So why the change? Several reasons: First, the Solid Waste enterprise continues to lose money in most years. The Solid Waste deficit at the end of each year has historically been made up with Service Charges. So this change clarifies what s been happening and makes our accounting in this area more transparent. Secondly, empty lot owners will now pay for brush and leaf service through their annual Service Charges. They ve paid nothing in the past for Public Works services that keep the street in front of their lot cleared of leaves and brush, as well as any pickup of refuse from their property that they ve requested. It s only equitable. Thirdly, this change replicates the practices of most municipalities. Most towns and cities charge home owners separately on a monthly basis for contracted garbage and recycle service and include other Solid Waste services in their Public Works department budget, which is paid from property taxes. Yes, it s a change. Yes, you ll pay less each month. Yes, overall, for most folks, you ll pay about the same when you add back in the increase in your Service Charge. It only makes sense. Sylvia Russell Tuscola Garden Club The Tuscola Garden Club will hold its next meeting on Tuesday, January 16, 2018, in Gaines Auditorium, Bethea Welcome Center..Featured speaker, Teresa Pennington, will present a program entitled How Nature Influences Art. Teresa is a self-taught colored pencil artist with a talent she says is God-given. Often spending as much as four months on one drawing, she meticulously renders the scenery, landmarks, floral and fauna of Western North Carolina, with an emphasis on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Her trademark is a pink Lady s Slipper, a wild orchid native to our mountain region, and has appeared in all of her work since 1996 in memory of her mother. Teresa has been commissioned by Biltmore Estates for more than 17 years and has completed four series of drawings capturing the grandeur of the house and gardens. She has also been commissioned by the U.S. Forest Service, the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation and the Western North Carolina Diocese of the Episcopal Church to render drawings for fundraising campaigns. Her newest project will be a series to raise money for the Southern Appalachians Highland Conservancy, an organization dedicated to preserving land bordering our area s national forests. Her colored pencil drawings are reproduced as lithographs, giclée (digital prints) on paper and giclées on canvas. TPennington Art Gallery is located at 15 N. Main Street, Waynesville. Tuscola Garden Club will gather at 9:30 a.m. for social time, with the program beginning at 10:00 a.m. The Club s business meeting will begin at the conclusion of the program. Tuscola Garden Club programs, meetings, and membership are open to the public. For information, please contact Teresa Brothers, President, at

3 Page 3 Guest Columnist..Mitzi Johnson, Director of Programing True confession. I ve never been a fan of winter. As a girl growing up on North Carolina s Crystal Coast, winter was a season to survive. In those coldest months, we hunkered down and counted the days till the tourists returned. We longed for the sounds of beach music, the scent of Hawaiian Tropic, and the sight of vibrant umbrellas dotting the sand like sprinkles on an ice cream sundae. Now, in the midst of my first Lake Junaluska winter, my thoughts on this supposedly dead season have changed entirely. Here, winter is not a season to survive, but a season to embrace! The prophet Isaiah reminds us, As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it"(is 55:10-11). Whoa! It turns out God has gifted the Earth with winter as a time of preparation for a great harvest of being drenched in the Word and readied to do all the things God has called us to do. As I write this, churches across the Southeast are praying traveling mercies on their youth groups as they depart for the first of our five winter youth retreats. Each day they will ski, zipline, or do mission work, and each night they will gather in Shackford Hall for worship. My hope is that they will connect the exhilaration of these activities with the heart-pounding, life-changing realization that they are critical players in the continuing story of God. In addition to Lake Junaluska musical favorites Jimmy Atkins and Abbye West Pates and returning speakers Celia Whitler and Eddie Willis, notable new speakers include Chris Sasser, a seasoned Family Ministries pastor and a lead consultant with Ministry Architects, an organization that helps build sustainable, deep-impact youth ministries across 23 Christian denominations. Another first-timer, Jeremy Steele, will speak during the New Year s Eve event. He is a Next Generation pastor and senior editor of the Seedbed Youth Ministry Collective and the author of Reclaiming the Lost Soul of Youth Ministry. If you are interested in dropping in for an evening to see what our youth programs are like, check the schedule at lakejunaluska.com/youth and arrange a visit by ing me at mjohnson@lakejunaluska.com. Junaluskans Dinner January 16 th 5:30PM Terrace Hotel Our first entertainer for 2018 is Jess Cook. Don t forget to get your dinner tickets at Bethea Welcome Center by January 15 th. Jess Cook's love of music goes back to early childhood, listening to his father play old country and folk songs. But it wasn't until his 40s that he began learning to play guitar as means to restore full use of his hands after spinal repairs. It was a life changing pursuit. Since then he has played in rock, blues, and country bands as well as solo appearances, originally in his native California, then here in Western North Carolina since moving to the mountains in Jess has performed for the Haywood County Arts Council Friends of the Library concert series, both solo and with an ensemble. He has also performed with bands in Haywood County and around Asheville, supported various church events with his music, and is a regular at local musician gatherings. "I like to do familiar things in a sometimes different way, always for the sake of the song. It must be musical. Each person in the audience has given a small piece of their life to be there. That is a sacred gift. I am honored to share that time and space." Aviemore Christmas Party Junaluskans brought sugarless candy, gave generously, shopped for residents, decorated, cooked, served and enjoyed the Christmas party on December 14th with the residents at Aviemore Village. Thank you for making it possible! Through out the year we support the residents in this subsidized senior housing facility, which has 24 units, by stocking a food pantry using the funds members contribute to the fish bowl at meetings. In December we provide a Christmas party along with a $25 gift for each resident. For some it is their only Christmas celebration and their only Christmas gift. I wish all of you could have seen their faces as they waited in the hall to come in the common room and their faces later when Jim Correll did a short program. The next time you are in the library look at the plaque and commendation we received last spring from the governor's office for this Christmas project, but know that the faces of the residents and their verbal thanks were to the Junaluskans. 4 Page 4 JUNALUSKANS BOOK REVIEW January 17, 2018, 10:00AM, Susan Todd Lounge Some physical and spiritual events are almost impossible to describe with conventional adjectives. They defy the commonality of usual conversation because they represent the rarified air of the uncommon! Such is the brilliance of the most versatile talent of the Italian Renaissance: Leonardo da Vinci. Walter Isaacson, in his compelling book, Leonardo da Vinci, has attempted to capture the intense imaginative power of this genius, who was centuries ahead of his time in countless disciplines. Isaacson introduces us to a master artist, scientist, engineer, anatomist, experimenter, and naturalist all areas coupled with a keen sense of curiosity and inquisitiveness. Who else would have Describe the tongue of a woodpecker on his to-do list. Mike Leatherwood will review this classic scholarly work. Be prepared for another review on cruise control due to the amazing life and accomplishments of Leonardo! We look forward to seeing you on January 18. The Book Review will take place unless, due to inclement weather, Haywood County Schools are closed. Jim Cooper Dear Friends, What a joy it was to be with you, Kathy McNeil, and the Lake Junaluska Singers for Appalachian Christmas. Even with the foot of snow we made some breathtakingly beautiful music. What a gift to give and receive such heavenly sounds! Back in NYC, our family has 30 concerts and services in December, along with related rehearsals, and two national broadcasts. I have a brief cameo in a commercial that has been broadcast in AMC Theaters proceeding the new Disney movie, "Coco". It has also been released online: watch?v=dnfc1is1hjo Concurrently to my work in NYC I am thinking about next season at Lake Junaluska. We are accepting applications to be a Lake Junaluska Singer for If you know of a very fine singer in college or graduate school that would like to spend the summer in beautiful Western North Carolina, please send them to our website: lakejunaluska.com/singersauditions. Applications will be accepted through March 1, and I will prioritize applications that are submitted early. Don Keck Vespers Our first Vespers worship service of 2018 will be Sunday January 7 at 5 pm in the Harrell Center. Our faith sharer will be Susan Giles. Susan grew up in Charlotte and went to college in Athens, Ga where she earned a BS in Experimental Food, but (more importantly) met Sandy Giles. Marrying a semester prior to Susan s graduation, they then moved to Macon, Ga, where they lived for 3 years and where their daughter Kari was born. Moving next to Durham and Duke Divinity school for Sandy to pursue an MDiv, Susan taught Commercial Food Service and HomeEc at Durham High. It was during Sandy s first appointment at Cliffside, NC that their son Zachary was born. After following Sandy around the WNC conference for 22 years, Susan entered seminary to fulfill her own call to ministry. In 2009, Sandy and Susan were appointed to churches in Waynesville where they served until this past July. Susan currently serves as Dean of Memorial Chapel, the first woman to hold that position. Please join us Sunday evening for the story of Susan s faith journey. Sharon Carlisle We would like to thank our Lake Junaluska family for all the support and prayers given to us during Evelyn s mother s decline and death. Your cards and words of encouragement mean so much.
