1 2336 Freeport Rd. Rockton, IL Phone: Web page: Worship Service: Sunday 9:00 a.m. Sunday 10:30 a.m. Education Hour LCMC Website: The Promoter Prince of Peace Lutheran Church Rockton, Illinois JANUARY 2018 Pastor s Letter Abba, Jesus prayed. Abba, He invites us to pray. Abba is Aramaic for Father, or better for Daddy. According to Hebrew scholar Sandra Richter, in ancient Israel, an individual s link to the legal and economic structures of their society...was the patriarch of the clan. By inviting us to pray Abba to the Creator God, Jesus reveals that our Patriarch, the head of our household (bet ab in Hebrew) is the living God. All the members of a household offered their labor to the Abba, and expected from him all that was necessary for life, things like food and shelter, protection and order, rest and provision, safety and identity. God is not distant. He is present in the Word and comes to us in Sacrament. He longs to hear us, to unburden us, to free us, to supply us with life, abundant life. Just open your heart, ask and adore, reveal and rejoice. Pastor Hank Corcoran

2 Worship Messages January 7 - With You I am well pleased January 14 - Follow Me January 21 - Follow Me. I will make you fishers of men. January 28 - Jesus has Authority (and gives it to you and me) WELCOME to the new members of Prince of Peace who were received at the 9:00am worship service on December 17, David & Vanessa Corcoran Jim & Sandy Buske The Eucharistic Team will be visiting those that are home bound, providing communion and fellowship. If you know of anyone that would like to receive such services please call the office ( ). Their next scheduled visit will be Sunday, January 7, between 10:15-11:00am. Weekly Children s Bulletins Each Sunday we will have children s bulletins available for youth ages 3-6 and 7-12 during the worship service. The bulletins include activities related to the gospel for that day. Please ask the ushers for a copy for your youth. Prayer Huddle - The group meets every Monday at 9:30am at the church. All are welcome to join us in praying for the requests that are listed on the Connection Cards from Sunday s worship service. LCMC s Sixth Annual Three Days of Prayer January 2-4, 2018 Prayer is a gift that God has given to us as a means to approach the throne of grace with confidence, like that of a child coming to her parents sharing concerns, victories, defeats and every part of life. It is an opportunity to express the deepest heartache and the greatest joy. Prayer is a conversation between the Creator and the created...and the conversation began with God, for us, in Christ Jesus. by Rev. Mark Vander Tuig, Service Coordinator, LCMC Day One: January 2 This is a day focused on confession. We have made our lives, our relationships and even the church in our own image. We confess that the church belongs to Jesus and not to us. We gather to lay down our pride, our sin and our agenda and ask the Lord of the church for forgiveness, which He gives freely and with mercy. Day Two: January 3 This is a day of petition. Pray for your congregation, for the pastor, for the leaders, for those who carry out ministries, for the Sunday School teachers, for the Confirmation leaders, for those leading adult Bible studies and for those leading small groups. Pray for those in hospital and nursing home ministries. Pray for all those connected to your church that they might know God s redeeming love for all in Christ. Day Three: January 4 This is a day for vision. Pray that the Holy Spirit will again move through the hearts and minds of leaders and pastors that God s vision for His church might be revealed and fulfilled. This is a time of prayer for renewal, revival and encouragement. Pray for God s vision. Out of office -Pastor Hank will be on vacation from Dec. 27 to Jan. 2. -Kara Wallace will be on vacation from Jan. 1 to Jan. 5.

3 Service A BIG thank you to all who helped support our military service people. We were able to send ten $25.00 money orders to them for this holiday season. We are so blessed to have them watching over us and making the American people safe. Mary Rachel Circle Angel Tree service project is complete with the help our volunteers Cheri Saarinen and Pam Novotnak. Ten children in the Stateline area will have a very Merry Christmas thanks to your unwavering generosity. The gifts were picked up Friday morning for distribution. Operation Ward 57 did not get off the ground this year. I apologize for that. I was not aware how this project worked since Pastor Cheryl did all the initial leg-work last year. I now know there is an application process with deadline which I missed. I did make phone calls and send an , but no responses received The monies raised this past year from the Men's Cake Bake-off Auction and the Ladies Pie Auction will roll over to next year. The Jalen Heath Benefit was introduced to the congregation and before I left the sanctuary, I had four enthusiastic volunteers for the committee and two more that asked to help during coffee hour. Thank you to John Saarinen, Daphne McNames, Wendy Goldsworthy, Sue Peterson, Sherre Faulkner and Ed Specht for volunteering. I am asking the families of Jalen to send a representative from each side, also. We will have our first meeting after Christmas. I would appreciate input from the volunteers about the days/ times that will work for all of us considering many have day jobs. You never cease to amaze me with your generosity and love for volunteering. Graciously yours, Lora Conrad. Fellowship January Book Club Join the group and read The Immortal Nicholas by Glenn Beck. Meet for discussion and fellowship at 7:00pm on Wednesday, January 17 th at Pam Novotnak s house. January Movie Night Join us for the movie Only God Can on Saturday, January 13th at 6:00pm in Nicholas Hall. The film focuses on a group of five friends struggling through life's challenges and events that lead the women to reevaluate their lives and their faith in God. Discipleship Mary Rachel Circle - Our January 23, 2018 meeting will be at the church with Mary Mackenthun hosting. We will be studying lesson 9, I am the Alpha and the Omega from our book Portraits of Jesus. Happy New Year! Prayer Shawl Group - We had a very successful start up year under the direction of Karen Martini and Pastor Cheryl. Numerous blankets / shawls were made and dispersed within the church and community. No count was taken as it was a very successful undertaking. Thank you to all who supported the project with donations of time, material, yarn, labels, and making quilts/crocheting edging. We will not be meeting monthly since this is a do at home leisure time project. However we will be bringing all shawls to church on a future Sunday to have Pastor Hank pray upon them before they can be passed out. If you know of someone who could use a Prayer Shawl, please let Kara in the office know. God s Blessing to you all, Mary Jo Olson AWANA is a children s ministry for K - 6th grade students that includes really fun games, a great time with friends, and learning about Jesus.
