1 July - August 2018 OUR LADY OF OLIVES COUNCIL #3907 The Olive Branch Our64 rd Year Chartered - November 14, 1954 KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS Shooting for a STAR! Chaplain's Message... Carpe Diem! Dear Brother Knights, The expression, Carpe Diem, is a Latin phrase that means Seize the Day. It s attributed to the Roman poet, Horace. This simple statement expresses a meaningful message. Horace was urging others to make the most of the present time and give little thought to the future. For me, it s so easy to let one day slip into another and before you know it, the week or even the month is gone! Where did the time go? The same can be said of the seasons, especially summer. Our pace of activity today can be so hectic that we fail to take the time and smell the roses. Don t let this happen to you and this wonderful season of sunshine! Every single moment of every single day is a gift from God, never to be repeated again or held over to the next. That s why it s important to live each day in the presence of the Lord and to cherish life experiences as the gift they are meant to be. Recognize the gift of longer days, warmer weather, the song of the birds, the warmth of the sun and the refreshment of shade. It s all good! Recognize these simple gifts that we often overlook or take for granted and give God thanks. Do we cherish the gift of others in our life particularly members of our families and dear friends? Make the time to visit them, share a meal together, pick-up the phone and reconnect. If you can t afford the time for a week of vacation, consider a day trip. Go see a good movie. We all need to be shaken from our routines and inevitably, we return to our daily and weekly rituals refreshed and rejuvenated. Summer is also a great time to renew our prayer life. While taking advantage of the nice weather, sit on your porch or a lawn chair and recognize God s presence and just open your heart to Him. I like to catch-up on reading during the summer months. Often, I am handed a plethora of books and articles that I try to relax and read. Another possibility might be to take a small pilgrimage by visiting a church or two in the diocese. We are blessed with so many beautiful places to worship, and all are the house of God. Friends, don t let the days and weeks of summer pass you by without being renewed. Take some time to make a game plan for yourself, your spouse and perhaps your family. It s no secret that I love the snow and winter; but the truth is, a like all the seasons, including summer (although I am not fond of high humidity). The days pass quickly. Carpe Diem! Be sure to Seize the Day! In Jesus! Father Paul Zywan Chaplain, Council #3907 Grand Knight's Message... Brothers, As is the custom, Bill McKim passed the gavel to me during our council meeting on June 20 th, bringing to an end his two-year term as our Grand Knight. His term officially ended, and mine began as your newly elected Grand Knight on July 1 st the start of the new Fraternal Year. The same goes for all of the other elected officers as detailed elsewhere in this newsletter. My sincere gratitude goes out to Bill for a job well done as Grand Knight and for his continued dedication to our council as he makes the transition to the position of Three-Year Trustee. Thanks also to Chris Kelley, for an outstanding job as past Chancellor & Church Director and is now our Deputy Grand Knight and to George Franz as he moves from Warden to our new Chancellor & Church Director. On behalf of myself and ALL our members, I wish to extend our sincere appreciation to Fr. Zywan for remaining as our Chaplain and providing us with spiritual reflection each month. It would take this entire page for me to properly thank all the officers and program chairmen so let me just say this. Our council functions as a team, and the Grand Knight must rely on the support of his officers, as well as, those in the various appointed positions. With that, I wish to thank all of you that have served and continue to serve our council in this manner and I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge the efforts of the many other dedicated members that step-up and give of their time in support of our various council functions! We have seen many changes take place over the last several years and have met the challenge every time! As we begin the new Fraternal Year, we begin with another change with the implementation of the Faith in Action program model for council activities. (detail in this issue) Back to some business as usual. On June 2 nd we had a Wives Appreciation Night with a great buffet dinner and tour of the Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry. Many thanks go to George Franz for arranging this wonderful event! On the weekend of June 23-24, we hosted the 48 th Annual TRY Baseball Tournament. Many thanks to Shawn Cannon and all those who helped! Looking ahead; our Council Picnic is scheduled for August 26 th and we have a Council Pirates game planned for September 21 st. I look forward to serving as your Grand Knight and leave you with this thought: We each have all the time there is; our mental and moral status is determined by what we do with it. - Mary Blake Bill Romig Grand Knight

2 Our Lady of Olives Council # Knights of Columbus <> July - August 2018 <> Page 2 Past Grand Knight's Message Brothers, I have been privileged to serve Council #3907 as its Grand Knight for the last two years. By the time this message is published my term will have ended and Bill Romig will have begun his term as Grand Knight. I very much appreciate all the support the officers and members of our Council provided. Many men stepped forward and willingly accepted responsibility for the programs and activities we support. I thank each of them for what they have done for me, the Council, and the larger community who benefits from what we do. Serving as Grand Knight is a great learning experience and honor. During my tenure I greatly increased my knowledge of the Knights of Columbus and the resources that are available to help us achieve our spiritual and temporal objectives. In addition to working on projects and learning how to lead a fine group of men I have been able to increase my faith through my association with the members of the Council and our activities. From the beginning, I have been struck by how being in the presence of men who share my faith is inspiring. Our shared devotion to the Blessed Mother as expressed by the Council s recitation of the Rosary before our meetings is an example of how we have emphasized spiritual formation. Again, thank each of you for your help. I offer you my prayers and best wishes as our Council transitions under new leadership. William J. McKim Past Grand Knight Summer Picnic August 26 th Mark Your Calendars to Reserve August 26 th so you can attend the Council family picnic at Pine Community Park, Keyes Pavilion (by the basketball courts) from 2PM to Dusk or when we fall asleep. The second annual basketball free throw contest and water balloon contest will happen. Not sure about an egg toss. Bill Annual Columbian Knights Meeting The Annual Columbian Knights meeting was held on the evening of June 20 th 2018 at our Council Home in Wexford. It had always been the past practice of holding an officer s meeting on the first Wednesday of each month (open to general membership present) and an Annual Meeting on the Third Wednesday of June each year for general membership; this in accordance with the CK By-Laws. Without the maintenance of an owned building to consider, it was decided last year, to hold a general membership meeting quarterly with officer s meetings as required. The annual meeting will remain the Third Wednesday of June. The new Columbian Knights budget for was voted on and approved. It was noted that the year ended below budget. The current By-Laws for Columbian Knights will be reviewed for any needed amendments. Current President, Bill Romig noted that as he transitions from DGK to GK of Council 3907, he passes the gavel to Chris Kelley, the new DGK of Council 3907 and thus the President of Columbian Knights. I thank my officers and others that have given me their support over the last two years and ask that you give same to Chris. 6 Our Lady of Olives Council # Knights of Columbus <> July - August 2018 <> Page 6 Faith in Action As I mentioned in my Grand Knight message on the front page, our Supreme Council has implemented a new program model for Council Activities. This new program called Faith in Action is a mandate to all councils (order wide); and is effective immediately with the beginning of the Fraternal Year. It replaces the old Surge with Service and consists of four major categories: Faith, Family, Community and Life. This change will have an impact on how we structure our council program activities and assign program chairmen to fit into the new groupings of (4). Many will stay the same and a number of new program categories have been introduced. I would ask that all members review the detailed explanation of this new initiative in your June issue of the Columbia Magazine Page-12. You may also visit the website: <kofc.org/faithinaction>. While this is yet another change from business as usual it is not anything that we will not be able to work out. As the article in the Columbia Magazine explains, Faith in Action is designed to help councils be more proactive in the four new categories. Some of the necessary changes in our council structure may be a little challenging at first, but as your Grand Knight I see it as an opportunity to work with the officers and program chairmen to enhance the charitable and community work that we already do. Remember the saying: when one door closes, another is opened.
