1 The Asbury News June 217 News and Information for the Residents of Asbury Heights Family Day: A Celebration of The Beatles This year s Family Day falls on World Beatles Day (Sunday, June 25) and so we re celebrating the music and influence of The Beatles! Residents campus-wide have been helping prepare for the big day in various ways which include starring in a promotional video (page 6) and creating Beatles-inspired artwork for display (page 8). There will be plenty of food and fun, so please invite your family using the invitations located in the Post Office. And, as always, Asbury will pay the postage! Sunday, June 25 12: pm - 3: pm Campus wide Sponsored by Daisy Troop Gives Back Page 3
2 Tie-Dye Time! The Independent Resident Craft Class made tie-dye shirts on June 6 in preparation for Family Day. These one-of-a-kind designs will be for sale on Family Day. All money earned from sales will go to support the benevolent care fund. Hats for Children Asbury Angels Help Nyadire Mission The Asbury Angels who also belong to the Knitting & Crocheting Circle recently made 47 colorful caps to send to the faith-based Nyadire Mission, a non-profit organization in the rural northeast of Zimbabwe. The caps will be tucked into the luggage of a large team of volunteers who will arrive in the middle of Zimbabwe s cool July winter. The warmth provided by the hats are sure to be a welcome addition to the many children and babies served by the mission. Spring Craft Show & Sale Original paintings were on display and prints were for sale. Remaining items will be available during Family Day. This year s Spring Craft Show & Sale featured crafts, works of art and beauty products created by the Independent Living residents. The event raised $59 for the benevolent care fund. If there was something you were considering or forgot to get at the sale, you are in luck! The Craft Show will be on display during Family Day on Sunday, June 25. Stop by and pick something up for family or friends this summer! Refer-A-Friend Turn Friends Into Neighbors The Turn Friends Into Neighbors program gives residents (and their family members) the opportunity to turn friends into neighbors through referrals. If a referral moves in by the end of the year, the referring resident will receive a $1, credit toward one month of their rent. If your friend is not yet ready to move or is still weighing his or her options, they can become members of Asbury s Priority Club which allows them to essentially try before they buy and sample some of Asbury s services while they consider moving into our community. Special thanks to Ann Delo and Carol Todd for their contributions to this article. Daisy Troop Gives Back Daisy Troop 65 meets once a month in the Social Room where they earn petals and various badges according to the Girl Scout Law. The Girl Scout Law encourages young girls to follow several character values, a few of these include being friendly & helpful, considerate & caring, courageous & strong and above all to make the world a better place! The troop wanted to thank residents for their hospitality in a special way by planting flowers in small pots and sharing them with residents of the Nursing Center. Their hope was that the colorful arrangements would help make Asbury a better place! Flower Power! 2 3 Troop 6 5

Dr. Harvey s sermon is Our Resurrected Life Today Romans 6:14-23 July 9: Dr. Harvey s sermon is Who Will Deliver Us? Romans 7:14-25a July 16: Dr. Harvey s sermon is Lives Worthy of the Lord Romans 8:1-11 Asbury Accolades Positive Experiences at Asbury Heights Our managers and administrators receive many positive notes from residents and families throughout the year thanking them for the services provided. We feel it s important to share these notes with you to give you a better idea of the care you can expect from the various communities at Asbury Heights. The following excerpt comes from a letter written by Dr. and Mrs. Russell Sacco: My mother, Eleanor Richardson, received excellent and compassionate care while at Asbury. She flourished in her three years living in the Villas. She was a resident on Evergreen... for the past two years where she received outstanding care from the nurses, especially Heather, the aides, dietary, Teresa of Activities and physical therapy. We looked at 1 other facilities five years ago when we needed to move Mom and Asbury just had such a welcoming and warm atmosphere when we toured it. Asbury was certainly the right choice for her. Bible Studies for June and July Rev. Charles Smith is leading a weekly Bible study on Tuesday nights at 7: pm in Baum Chapel on the Book of Genesis. Dr. Harvey s Bible Studies at the Embassy and Hickman Chapel will not be held in June but will resume July 7 with a study of the Book of Daniel. Catholic Services Eucharistic services will be held on every Wednesday in June and July at 1:45 pm in Hickman Chapel, except for July 12 which will be a celebration of Mass led by the priests of St. Bernard Parish. Remembering Robert Tanner We regret to announce the death of Robert E. Tanner, who became organist and choir director of Hickman Chapel in January 1987; a post which he held until his death on June 9. Mr. Tanner served the Asbury community faithfully and with distinction. His cheerful and confident presence will be missed, but we are comforted that he is with the Lord. A Memorial Service for Mr. Tanner will be held on Sunday, July 2 at 2:3 pm in Hickman Chapel. Sympathy may be sent to Mrs. Patricia Tanner, 486 Broadmoor Dr., Pittsburgh, PA Long-term Employees Make the Difference Asbury honored 27 employees who reached service milestones in 216 during a luncheon on May 17. The honorees celebrated between five and thirty years with the organization. Asbury is fortunate to have such a dedicated team of long-term employees. When employees remain on the job for years (or decades), it s evident that they are satisfied with their jobs and the work they do, and it reflects positively on their employer. Long-term employees also provide residents with a familiar, friendly face on a daily basis. This is important to those looking for consistent care from a trusted source, and that is exactly what Asbury has come to be - a trusted resource for older adults for over 18 years! 4 Asbury Villas The Merry Month of May Family Day Promotional Video Have you seen the Family Day promotional video created by the residents and staff of Asbury Villas? If not, you can still watch it from any Asbury television on the in-house Cable Channel 957 until Monday, June 26. The video features residents throughout - whether in a yellow submarine, showing off their dance moves or acting as The Beatles playing on the Ed Sullivan Show. Couples Dinner Five resident couples attended a special dinner in the Country Kitchen on May 22. The couples enjoyed a special angel food dessert called Berry Delight. The goal of the dinner was to get the couples together to mingle and talk about their weddings and life as husband and wife. Asbury Villas residents had a lot of fun starring in the Family Day promotional video. The Activities staff thought the best way for the couples to have this conversation was by setting up this separate dinner just for them. Truffles, Tea and Tiaras Our friends from Superior Home Care helped us celebrate International Tiara Day on the afternoon of May 24 with a Truffles, Tea and Tiaras event. Giving Changes Lives News from Asbury Foundation Thoughtful Planning A Legacy Made William M. Cadwallader served in the U.S. Air Force from and was a Master Mechanic for 35 years with Duquesne Light Company. He was a Crafton native and a member of Asbury s 198 Society. Asbury Foundation recently learned of the passing of Mr. Cadwallader. He made arrangements in his estate plans, through his will, naming Asbury Foundation to receive a generous gift of $2, in support of our mission to provide high quality and compassionate care to the residents we serve. This kindness memorializes his sister, longtime Asbury Volunteer, the late Marjorie Cadwallader. On behalf of the Foundation, we are most grateful for Mr. Cadwallader s thoughtful planning. By naming us in his will, he has secured a legacy to continue Asbury s mission into the future. If you would like to learn how you can create a legacy by making a gift to Asbury through your will, please contact Courtney Kartman, Development Coordinator at William M. Cadwallader We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give. - Winston Churchill Resident couples entered the Country Kitchen by crossing under a balloon arch.
