3 Going Forward Our church is involved in the Going Forward program. Your Going Forward team is meeting with a mentor, Rick McKinley, on a regular schedule for coaching. They also meet regularly to discuss discipleship and service opportunities. Rick has recommended a great book for our reading: First Impressions : Creating Wow Experiences in Your Church. The following is an introduction to this book, which was written by Mark L. Waltz. Guests in church often decide whether to return or not before service even starts. It's crucial to create a welcoming environment for guest of your church--to ensure that their first impression is the best impression. Author Mark Waltz gives you practical strategies that have worked in his own church--that you can easily implement in yours. Learn how to make guests feel welcome the moment they pull in to your parking lot. Gain an understanding of the philosophy, strategy, and implementation of a ministry that focuses on welcoming guests. Get practical ideas that take your church "greeting" to a whole new level. If you would like to read this book, please contact a member of the Going Forward Committee to borrow our copy. After service, be sure to come to our Fellowship time in the blue room. Please continue to wear your nametag, so we all can easily call each other by name. When you leave you may either place your nametag in our nametag collection basket or replace it on the board. From 50 Ways to Welcome a New Pastor Send cards of welcome and encouragement to the incoming pastor. Know that welcoming your new pastor in genuine and effective ways lays the ground work for a healthy and vital relationship and the development of stable, long-term ministries together. Show love, regard, and even grief, for your departing pastor. Wear your name tag. (UMCE note: Let s practice by wearing our badges now, so we do not forget in July.) Provide the congregation the opportunity to say thank you and goodbye to the outgoing pastor. (UMCE note: Please reserve June 2 to celebrate Pastor John s retirement.) Respectfully submitted, Going Forward Committee Lorraine Creedon, Don Crouser, Carrie Kinney, Doug Oakes, Linda Thorn, Wendy Morse 3

Pastor Janet is a second-career pastor, having worked as a history curator for twenty years in museums in New England and Pennsylvania. She heard God s call to ministry while participating in the life of Asbury UMC in York, Pennsylvania, several years after a friend invited her to a Sunday morning adult faith class. Never underestimate the power of an invitation! Pastor Janet loves to bake, and is known for her desserts. She never has enough room for her cookbooks, which seem to multiply when she isn t looking. She was born and grew up in eastern Massachusetts. Her family includes two brothers and their families, along with friends scattered all over the country. Pastor Janet said God s action in my life has taken me to many interesting places. From Pennsylvania back to New England, to seminary in North Carolina to Mystic CT for my first appointment and to Lenox MA for my second appointment. Now I find myself back in Connecticut! I look forward to serving The United Methodist Church of Enfield, a congregation that clearly is committed to serving Christ in the wider community. We are having a reception after the Needham s The Men s Group meets concert! Please consider helping us with this every Thursday morning event. If you would like to contribute by at 10:00AM for a hot bringing or making finger food for this time of breakfast and fellowship. hospitality, please contact Linda Thorn or the Please join us. church office. 5 A thought for April 2018: No, O people, the Lord has told you what is good, and this is what he requires of you: to do what is right, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God. Micah 6:8 (New Living Translation) April! Let us rejoice and sing our songs of praise and joy for this glorious world. Just look around our small town to see such wonderful diversity in people, buildings, animals, plants, everything. Rejoice in the wonder! Did you miss the Green Hair for Oswald??? Members of our congregation and our friends went green on March 18 to support Oswald and the EFS. Look at these wonderful pictures below. Lots of fun AND $711 donated to the EFS. THANK YOU! Did you join us for the February potluck? How about the March Palm Sunday Breakfast? Next activity is a Soup Cook-off on April 29! Be sure to plan your last Sunday, so you can enjoy soup from our fantastic cooks. There is a sign-up sheet for the event for our fabulous cooks. Join us in the Fellowship Hall for coffee and snack after church on Sundays. Good company. Good coffee. Good snacks. Time to relax and enjoy your church family. Please remember to wear your name tag. We will have a basket where you may leave your badge in the Fellowship Hall. Enfield Food Shelf UMCE will be the Northern Enfield collection site for the Letter Carrier s Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive on Saturday May 12. A sign-up for volunteers will be available. Please come and help out. There is good fellowship and good service in this wonderful mission. Please see Don Crouser or any SON committee member for more information. THANKS YOU for all those wonderful egg cartons. The EFS has sufficient egg cartons for now, since egg donations have diminished. BUT they extend their gratitude for our collection. When the egg cartons are needed again, they will let us know. Plastic bags are still needed. Please continue to help your community Food Shelf help our poor. Pray for First Responders We have a basket with toy police and fire personnel figurines in the narthex. Please take one home as a reminder to pray for all the first responders that keep our community safe. Remember to say a pray for their skills and safety. - continued on next page - 5

Please let us know if the freezer is getting low on meals, so we will know, when to start cooking our next set of meals. THANKS! If you would like to join this ministry, please see Linda Thorn about the next scheduled cooking day! Warming Center Update We have had an amazing year with our guests numbering up to 15 a night. The Center has stayed open longer hours during the big snow storms giving the guests a place to stay out of the worst weather. The Enfield People for People Safe Harbor Warming Center is an amazing grass roots mission that demonstrates what churches in our community can do when we work together. There are so many great stories - people getting jobs (even starting their own business), finding apartments, getting treatment for illnesses and most importantly the fellowship and support that has developed among them. It's your support that helps make all this possible thank you. Warming Center Fund Raiser A Pocketbook Auction will be held on Friday May 11th, at Holy Family Church. Doors open at 7:00 p.m. Auction will start at 7:15. Pocketbooks may be gently used or brand new and there may be surprises hidden inside! Refreshments will be served. Tickets are $5. Please come and join the fun. See Lorraine Creedon if you are interested in attending or if you have pocketbooks to donate. 6
