We have a lot of information in this edition, more information than space this time. Our annual reunion and general business meeting; In order for The LSA to continue, we need more support and attendance at our annual meeting. Our attendance was down last year in Concord, if the trend continues, we will need to re-visit our meeting plans and agenda. We have been trying to move the meeting around to allow all of our members easy access, and this year is no exception. Savannah is the first time we are meeting in the Southeast, I hope you will consider attending and meeting a bunch of old friends. We also conduct most of our annual business at this meeting, and we need your input. One of the subjects to be discussed will be the status of existing Lightships. We are anticipating a lively discussion in the search for new ideas. PLEASE FILL OUT THE RE- UNION REGISTRATION FORM AND MAIL IT IN WHILE YOUR THINKING ABOUT IT! We started a project last year recording our oral histories on video tape for our historical records. We would encourage you to come to Savannah with your notes or your service jacket which lists all of the important dates and various duty stations where you served. This information is important for our history and will be lost unless we record it now. Ron Janard, LSA Historian, is our chairman of this project. Also in this edition is a reminder of our election of officers for the next term. We need volunteers to stand for nomination, please consider volunteering for a term of office. The LV112 project is still on hold due to a variety of factors that have the move from Oyster Bay to Boston delayed. It s going to happen, and soon, once the weather cooperates with the tow company. A lot of us are looking forward to the relocation. See page 6 for information on the WLV 605 Relief. We sure hope something can be done to help save this Lightship. We are about out of Sea Stories and pictures for both the web site and this newsletter. Please take a few minutes and sift through some of your old pictures, please be sure to include all names and dates that you can recall. We want to be able to post them on the website after they are printed in the newsletter. Speaking of the website, for those of you that don t have website access, ask one of your kids or grandkids to go on line to then click on All things Lightship then click on USCG Lightship Sailors. If you have not seen these, they will bring back a lot of memories, and you most likely will find someone long forgotten that you sailed with. Until Next Edition, Be Healthy and Keep a Good Light, Larry *************************************************************************************************************************************** Learn to hear every fool on his favorite theme, and you will came away a wiser man

6 Secretary s Report Dave Orszak Secretary and Membership Director s Report Secretary Several additions were made to the LSA museum collection located within the Coast Guard heritage Museum, Barnstable, MA. Membership 2010 Memberships are proceeding with 166 paid to date including seven new Life memberships. Total life members is now 37. Other than life members, there are 105 Veterans and 24 Members. We are three months into our annual membership and still have a number of past members who have yet to renew. Please continue to support us. Again I ask you to check on-line at our website for confirmation of your membership status. In addition to receiving your membership card, check that I have updated our files correctly. The listing may be accessed by: a. Going to: Press ENTER b. Scroll down to All Things Lightship and click on the CLICK button. c. Scroll down to Lightship Crew Lists and click on the CLICK button. d. Scroll down to Listing By Name and click on the CLICK button. Please let me know of any changes required. Thank you to the members who have included additional contributions with their renewal dues. The membership renewal form on the website and included in the Fog Horn has been modified to allow the member to designate if the Fog Horn should be received in electronic form or continue in paper form. The electronic form is less costly to the LSA and offers the advantage to the member of easier to copy any contents of the newsletter including pictures, as well as receiving the latest edition up to 3 weeks sooner than by not-for-profit mail. Think about it. Dave Orszak, Secretary and membership Director ********************************************************************************************************************************************************************************** ANOTHER ENDANGERED LIGHT- SHIP-WLV 605 RELIEF The USLHS, owners of the 605 Relief in Oakland invited The LSA to a joint meeting with their board of directors on board the Relief in February, They were looking for ideas and possible help from The LSA in finding a steward or a new home for the Relief. Pete Marx and Larry Ryan were joined by Dale Matlock at the on board meeting with Jeff Gales, Executive Director, presiding. The 605 is probably one of the most original and intact of any lightship, with the exception of a thin hull in places. The society is losing $30,000 annually and cannot sustain the expense for long, and has even considered selling the ship for scrap, which would be a real tradjedy with all of the volunteer work that has been donated. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions, please let us know. God and the Warriors We Adore, Not Before The Danger Passed and All Things Righted, God is Forgotten and the Warrior Slighted. Rudyard Kipling Page 6

7 We recently received a request from Dr. Bill Thiesen, USCG Historian, Atlantic Region, to help identify the rank and other information contained in a picture he had received. In the process of responding to this request, through our members, additional information of interest to The LSA was discovered. Dr. Thiesen received a picture of a Coast Guard officer on a bridge of a Lightship, see picture below, with the name Alva Anderson and San Francisco Lightship. As we have found in the past, information, including commanding officers names, at best totally ignored or most often, have been lost to the wind. We contacted our members that had served on the 100/523 San Francisco Lightship looking for help. John Bryne provided a copy of the San Francisco Examiner published April 8, 1971 where the crew had been interviewed immediately before the ship was replaced with a LAN buoy and the decommissioning of the Lightship. Bob Nichols also responded with the picture taken from the CGC Magnolia. Pete Marx provided additional information on Mr. Anderson, including his previous duties and his last known place of residence. It has been an interesting chase that provided more information towards preserving our history. Alva C. Anderson, CWO, CO WLV 100/523 San Francisco Lightship. 13 year Coast Guard veteran, formerly Radioman. After leaving station, transferred to CGC Red Birch. Bob Nichols, EM2. After decommissioning of 100/523, received orders for boarding party school. After Coast Guard service, Bob went to work for Automatic Power Company that manufactured the light and fog signal for the LAN buoys. Bob is now in his 33 rd year, now as Sale Manager, for the company that replaced most of us. 8 LIGHTSHIP OF THE QUARTER L/V 106/528 built in 1923 for Nantucket Shoals station. She was one of 6 identical steam powered lightships all repowered in 1933 to diesel. The 106/528 spent all of her career in the Masachuchets District either on Nantucket Station or as Relief (MA) except for WWll when she was used as an examination vessel. She was retired in 1967 after 44 years of service, transferred to Surinam. LSA member Edward Kassick CWO USCG (Ret) was CO Images of ship and crew by John Noble Page 8

Adrian Van Houten Greetings from the Chaplain s Desk: It seems spring has sprung here in Michigan, temps have been running in the 60 and high 70 degrees. Because of the temps Easter for the family s had a perfect day to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the tomb, and the promise it brings when we trust and believe Him with our lives. The time is growing closer to our venture in Georgia. May the Lord guide our thoughts and actions as the planning is still going forward. As we contemplate the annual memorial, may we be an encouragement to each other as we serve one another. Have a wonderful and full summer filled with God s love and peace. Your Chaplain, Adrian Van Houten ********************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************** A MESSAGE FROM OUR HISTORIAN Ron Janard Activity at the CGHm in Barnstable has been in high gear getting ready for the spring opening. We continue to add items which require rearranging the displays. We are deeply indebted to Bill Collette, President CGHm, for his efforts and dedication. The missing issues are #1, #2, #3, #7 and #8. If anyone has any of these we would like to make a copy for our files. We will return the orginal to you. Please contact either myself or Larry Ryan. *************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************** We hold from God the gift which includes all others.
