2 News from Around the Village Dennis Goddard Leaves Askham Bryan Peter Stefanini writes In March Dennis informed his friends that he would be leaving Askham Bryan on 11th April and be moving to Bedfordshire to be nearer his family. Approaching 90 and with a few new medical problems which meant he had to give up driving, he had acted decisively and selflessly to spare his family the long drives up to Yorkshire. Of course, he delivered the letters personally door to door as he had so many times before with the Newsletter! A tea party to mark his departure was held in the Village Hall on 2nd April and was attended by around 40 people. Peter Stefanini listed the many things Dennis had done and was still doing for St Nicholas Church and the village. Peter said, Every time I felt I had completed the list, I thought of one more contribution Dennis had made! He had made a massive contribution to our church and a huge contribution to village life. As a leaving present, we gave Dennis two framed prints of the Church and of the Village Hall two places close to his heart. The Vicar then paid his own tribute to Dennis and led us in a prayer for Dennis s future in his new home. Dennis thanked everyone for the party and explained why he was leaving, emphasising how happy he and Marjorie, his late wife, had been in Askham Bryan. Frank Paterson also paid a tribute to the sterling work Dennis had done at Fairfax House. We will miss you Dennis more than we know, but God speed in your new life and come and see us from time to time. Broadband Latest Ray Byrne writes A superfast broadband service will be available in the village by the end of the year. The announcement was made by SFWY at a public meeting in May. Once available residents will have the option to upgrade to a fibre service. For full details visit the village website Children Society Boxes Jennifer Smith and Ann Watson write Thank you very much for all who contributed to the Children's Society enabling us to bank St Crux David Hartley writes Saturday May 6th was a St Nicholas Church St Crux fundraising day organised by Ann Manning and Ann Watson. Thank you to all the volunteers who baked and provided bric-a-brac for sale outside. We sold all the cakes along with a strong line in bacon butties and raised 660 for the church which was a great result. Thank you again. Page 2

3 Birth Announcement CONGRATULATIONS to Chris and Vicky Peart on the arrival of Florence May on Friday May 5 th weighing 9lb 2oz a sister for Iris. Craft Club Evelyn_Kilvington writes Since the last time I wrote the village charity craft club has been very busy. We have made and sent " Squares, 71 6" Squares, 15 knitted baby jumpers, 20 ponchos and 10 small square jumpers (made from the 4"squares), 1 penguin coat, 34 hats, 1 scarf, 1 monkey, 9 Christmas stockings, 22 assorted knitted toys, 1 blanket and a donation of towelling fabric. We have also had two donations from the village coffee mornings to cover postage (each parcel costs 2.90 and I send on average two parcels a week) we have also had 15 of donations from other friends of the group. If anyone can knit, crochet, sew, cross stitch or any craft and would like to join us twice a month please me; evelyn_kilvington@hotmail.com or GREAT NEWS - Playground Equipment coming soon In February York City Council announced that Askham Bryan Play Ground Association had won 17,000 of funding for capital expenditure on new playground equipment. The funding was won following entry into a competition via the Shine Magazine and run through August The children in the village were asked to submit their ideas to enhance the playground and suggest why extra funding would benefit them. Many thanks to all of those who contributed and supported the process. The land on which the Playground is located is owned by Askham Bryan Agricultural College. The lease expired several years ago. Allocation of the funding is reliant on a minimum lease term of no less than 10 years. Since February the Parish Council have been in negotiation with the Landlord to either renew the lease on the playground or acquire the playground for the village. The latter is the preferred option for the college and this option will be pursued. May I take this opportunity to thank all of the committed volunteers who give up their weekends to cut the grass and maintain the playground. Extra support is always welcomed and committee posts remain vacant. So if you have a spare hour or two over the course of the year the role of Treasurer or Secretary could be for you. Roger Thompson, Chairman and Secretary, Askham Bryan Playground Association , Village Hog Roast with Live Music at The Nags Head 2pm Sunday 3 rd September Tickets 10 ( 5 fur under 10 years) from the pub Many thanks to Paul and Marilyn for their support of the church and Askham Bryan village community Page 3

Everyone welcome from 10.00am to noon Wed 21st June Wed 19th July Wed 16th Aug Askham Bryan Walking Group Dates of forthcoming walks Tues 6 th Jun Ripley 5 3 / 4 miles Tues 18 th Jul Spofforth/Follifoot 5 1 / 2 miles Tues 15 th Aug Warter bring a picnic 7 miles Jennifer Smith writes Meet in the village at 9.15am just ring Monica on to let her know you are coming The Norman Arch At St Nicholas Church In the last Newsletter I described the Norman Arch in the South Porch of our parish church as the jewel of St Nicholas. Some time ago we received a painting from a Mr D K Holland of Sheffield which had been in the possession of his grandfather. We do not know the date of this picture but as you can see the gate was of much heavier duty iron than our current gate. The painting is signed JCH. It would be interesting if any readers might know who the artist was (Mr Holland did not.) Peter Stefanini writes The painting depicts quite admirably the three orders of the arch with their strong geometric patterns of chevrons, zig-zags and lozenges. These carry round from the face of the arch to the soffit, and are interspersed with carvings of foliage. The capitals above each column are carved with scallops, cones, spirals and trumpet like volutes. It is getting harder to make out some of these details as a result of erosion by the elements. The innermost (or first order) arch has square jambs with ribbed bosses along each chamfered edge. Not visible in the picture, on the right hand jamb four stones down from the capital is to be found a small consecration cross. This was pointed out to me by the legendary Sheila Dronfield in 1984 when we first came to the village. You could see it quite clearly then, but now it is almost invisible. This shows how quickly the ravages of time can wipe out architectural detail, and underlines how vigilant we need to be to preserve our heritage.

6 Page 6 Church News Wedding taken by the Revd Geoff Mumford Ann Manning reports Tim Kitching and Rowan Kim Bennett were married here on Friday April 28th. Both the bride and groom live and work in London but they have associations with our Parish. During the service a Gaelic Blessing was read by Rowan's mother and duets were played on cello and violin during the signing of the registers. The organist was Derek Peacock. Wedding - taken by the Revd Allan Hughes Ann Watson reports A sunny Easter Saturday saw the wedding at St Nicholas Church of Jenny Challinor and Leo Walters. Jenny is the daughter of villagers Jeff and Nesta Challinor. Village children carried out the old tradition of tying the church gate with ribbon until the bride and groom, in order to pass, threw pennies for the children. The Sad Loss of Geoffrey Holman David Hartley writes It is with great sadness that we have heard of the sudden death of Geoffrey Holman who was our non-stipendiary vicar for many years through the 1990s. Many of us will fondly remember both his gentle humour and lovely preaching voice in church along with his great affability over a beer at many village events. He had only just moved south to be closer to his family a month before his sudden final illness. Our thoughts are with his wife Eileen and family at this time of loss. A Word from Our Vicar During the First World War the Government were recruiting Morse Code operators. One young man who saw the advert went for an interview and was the last to arrive in the office where each potential candidate was busily filling in an application form, but walked straight into the interview room. All the other applicants moaned and objected. A moment later he came back out with the officer conducting the interviews and it was announced that he had got the job. That really upset the other candidates, but then the officer explained that he d got the job because all the time the candidates had been sat there, a Morse message had been tapped out saying If you understand this message come straight in, the job is yours. It is very easy to miss the important things in life, because we are too engrossed in doing what seems like the urgent things. These candidates had been engrossed in what they thought was important, rather than keeping an ear open for what was going on around them. Sometimes it is very easy for us to do that also, and miss what is happening around us. Last month we held a special event in the Village Hall with the Archdeacon of York, and plenty of folk came along to socialise and meet the Archdeacon in an informal setting. It was also the opportunity to hear about why the church has always been a place from which the Gospel (Good News) is proclaimed. This month there is an opportunity to hear the Gospel proclaimed at a very special service of traditional Evensong with Clerkes of All Saints. Even though it is a traditional service, the words, music and prayers all proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ. Why not come along for a different experience. Don t miss out on the really important things in life. With prayers, Geoff
