1 JULY 2017 To lovers of jigsaws everywhere, I feel your pain! These puzzles can be so frustrating, when just one piece that ought to be evident refuses to be found..i know this is July and the garden weeds beckon, but every now and then a bit of a diversion is good for us and gives our backs time to straighten My board that most of the puzzles fit sits on a table that I can rotate around, and it needs to at times when I need to take another look, from another perspective at the half completed picture and to fill those maddening gaps. Jesus was very good, in his earthly ministry, at getting people to see things from another perspective, to turn around what was being said or done and so often would answer a question with another. Take the story of the stoning of a woman caught in adultery, a tense and violent scene he witness was defused by asking the angry crowd a question, Who amongst you has not sinned, if not pick up your stone, that question took the wind out of the sails of the baying mob and they quietly, it seems melted away. Read the story in full John s gospel - chapter 8. So often we make up our minds about some issue, some person that upsets or irritates without turning around what we are thinking or feeling from our hearts. Best not then, to spend too long on the jigsaw or the weeding, but simply allow ourselves the time in this glorious summer month of holidays and sunny days, (we hope) to reflect on God s glory and grace knowing that in the end however much we struggle to put things in the right place, it is He who will complete the picture, each piece of our lives in the right place. With my love and prayers, June All inquiries at present to Mrs Betty Groves bettyirg@btinternet.com

2 PRAYER FOR JULY Heavenly Father We thank You for these light, warm days of summer, but, should our hearts and minds be troubled, we know that we can cast all our anxiety on You because You care for us. Amen LETTER FROM THE BISHOP OF GRIMSBY Dear Friends, We are convinced that England will never be converted until the laity use the opportunities for evangelism daily offered by their various professions, crafts and occupations this being so, the Christian laity should be recognised as the priesthood of the Church in the working world, and as the Church militant in action in the mission fields of politics, industry and commerce. So said the 1946 report, Towards the Conversion of England, commissioned by Archbishop William Temple. Seventy years later, and a more recent report, Setting God s People Free, debated at General Synod earlier this year, makes exactly the same point, and asks for what it calls two major culture changes in the way we think about being and doing Church. Until, together, we find a way to form and equip lay people to follow Jesus confidently in every sphere of life in ways that demonstrate the Gospel we will never set God s people free to evangelise the nation, says the report. Until laity and clergy are convinced, based on their baptismal mutuality, that they are equal in worth and status, complementary in gifting and vocation, mutually accountable in discipleship and equal partners in mission, we will never form communities that can evangelise the nation. It is a report that reminds us that as Christians we are not just redeemed from something, but for something as well. Each one of us is called to play our part in bringing about the transformation of our world and of lives as we share what we know of Jesus in all the different places God sends us to. We gather together on a Sunday to be sent scattered into the world as Church the other six days of the week. It is an exciting vision of what the Church has always been called to be, but maybe one we have not always lived out. The challenge for us as a diocese is how we do that now, to move from just words in a report, to actions that make a difference. Seventy years has been a long time to wait! + David Grimsby July 2017
