2 Page 2 News from Around the Village Gone, but never forgotten Colin Carbert writes The Askham Bryan Village Memorial to the men of the village who died in WW1 was erected in 1920 and was paid for by the village community. In the late 1980 s Mrs Mary Carbert raised funds to have the memorial cleaned and re-lettered. There are 8 men named on the memorial and this summer four generations of the Carbert family visited memorial sites in France and Belgium where 4 of the named men are buried: Private Fred Morley, West Yorkshire Regiment, died 20 April 1916 aged 21 (Cite Bonjean Military Cemetery Armentieres). Private 3/9403 Charles Powell, West Yorkshire Regiment, died 31 December 1914 aged 33 (Le Touret Military Cemetery Memorial). Corporal S/9189 John Albert Ellis, Seaforth Highlanders, died 12 October 1916 aged 30. (Thiepval Memorial). 2 nd Lieutenant Cecil Wellesley Ward, A Battery 148 Brigade Royal Field Artillery, died 11 September 1917 aged 40. (Lindenhook Chalet Military Cemetery). At each memorial the 4 th verse of Robert Binyon s poem For the Fallen was sung as an Act of Remembrance. They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them. Plans are being made to visit the 4 remaining sites of the fallen men next year. Operation Christmas Child Margaret North writes This year we have sent 24 shoeboxes from Askham Bryan and I would like to thank everyone who took part in the collection. They are always appreciated and give so much pleasure to the children. A Reminder to help the RNIB Margaret North writes Please continue to save stamps from your envelopes for the RNIB. The special Christmas stamps are particularly appreciated. They can be given to Margaret North (789366) or dropped through the letterbox at 131 Main Street (Dorothy Deighton). Would you like a Newspaper delivered? The Post Office on Moorcroft Road, Woodthorpe, has agreed to deliver newspapers to the village which they drop off in a box just inside the village hall gate. You have to collect your paper from there. They charge just 1 a week for the delivery and like to be paid monthly. If you would like a paper delivered contact the Post Office.

3 St Nicholas Church in 1776 Peter Stefanini writes You may be surprised to see our parish church looking like this with what I can only describe as ghastly brick appendages but this is how it looked in September 1776, just two months after the US Declaration of Independence. You can find this image on the on-line Gott Collection drawn by the artist, T Beckwith. Evidently a misguided Vicar or a committee of the great and the good (PCCs only started up in 1921) thought that these excrescences the brick tower and brick porch would improve a beautiful Norman stone church. We believe these additions occurred earlier in the eighteenth century [incorrectly stated on the website Romanesque Sculpture as nineteenth century] and were removed in the nineteenth century. You can just glimpse in the image, the beautiful Norman arch which at the time was actually set in the South Wall and was reset at the front of the new stone south porch. I came to look into this history solely because we have just had the south porch restored internally which involved filling some large cracks. The contractor asked me why the stones of the porch were not tied into the stones of the south wall and the explanation is clearly because it was a far later construction. People have been worshipping in our church for around 800 years a continuous handing on of the baton from one generation of Christians to the next. In that time there must have been many mistakes made with the fabric of the church. So thank goodness for the generation in the nineteenth century who removed the brick and replaced it with stone and at the same time provided a wonderful setting for our magnificent Norman arch surely the jewel of St Nicholas. The Children s Nativity Service Jo Hartley writes The Children s Nativity will be held on Christmas Eve at 4pm. Anyone interested in being involved with readings or participating in the Nativity scene, please contact Jo Hartley - Johanna.hartley@yahoo.co.uk. Please note that this year we are unable to hold our usual party after the service. If anyone else would like to volunteer their home, please let me know. Page 3

5 Page 5 Church News Baptism taken by the Revd Geoff Mumford Ann Manning reports Jacob Samuel born September 25th 2015, son of Pete and Amy Batchelor and brother to James John, was baptized during the Village Praise Service on 11th September. Edward Philip born 9th March 2016, son of Philip and Verity Johnson and brother to Eden Olivia was baptised on 2nd October. Thomas James born 30th May 2016, son of Matthew Foote and Helen Dales was baptized on 30th October. The family live in Huntington but have associations with this village. Lance Patrick Michael born 20th June 2016, son of Patrick Territt and Kate Maguire and grandson of Mike and Tina Territt, was Baptised on November 13th. A thanksgiving service taken by the Revd Geoff Mumford A Thanksgiving Service in loving memory of Patricia Ann Bell age 87 was held on 4th November and was followed by internment in the church yard. The congregation included her 3 sons and their families also many other friends and neighbours. Patricia had been brought up in Askham Bryan but lived for many years in Somerset and would return to the village several times a year where she still had a home. Donations at the service have been sent to the Crewkerne Community Hospital who, her family said, 'looked after Mum so compassionately'. A Fund Raising Success David Hartley reports August Bank Holiday Monday saw the sun shining (unlike last year!) for a splendid village social get together at the Nags Head for a Hog Roast. Wonderful food, company and music were enjoyed by all who came and we raised 815 for St Nicholas Church. Thank you to Paul and Marilyn and the staff at the Nags Head again for all their hard work and generosity. St Crux Raises 648 for the Church David Hartley reports This is a good source of funding from outside the village for our Church. We had a successful but quieter day at St Crux on 23rd September but it is a fun day working as a team with our neighbours. I would encourage anyone to come along even just for a few hours. If you are interested please speak to Ann Manning or David Hartley. Harvest Festival raises 70 for York Mind Following a well-supported family communion service approximately 30 people enjoyed a harvest lunch in the village hall. Very many thanks to Ann Watson and Jennifer Smith who worked hard organising the lunch and who donated the soups. Food donated at the service was taken to the York Food Bank. Many compliments have been received regarding the beautiful floral arrangements in church. Thank you to those who helped to decorate. Remembrance Service Ann Manning reports The Revd Clive Everett-Allan gave the address and Derek Peacock played the organ. The wreath was laid by Warrant Officer Graham Baker Retired and Frank Paterson, Chairman of the Parish council, who also read the lesson. The morning was still and sunny as the congregation observed the Last Post, 2 minutes silence and Reveille.

6 Dear Friends A Word from Our Vicar For some there is much to look forward to at this time of the year. For others there is little. I don t know which camp you fall into, but I suspect I have a foot in both camps. Advent, the period of preparation, and Christmas is a time of great thanksgiving and celebration as we await the arrival of the Christ child. I just love the sense of expectancy Christmas is the culmination of that as we delight in the incarnation, God with us, Emmanuel. On the other hand I am aware of the pressure that I will be under. However, I would much rather that than be in either of the other camps. I suspect that if I was only looking forward to Christmas I d be too eager to get there. If I had little to look forward to I would find myself dreading the whole season. I know that for a lot of people Christmas will not be a happy time. Indeed if we are facing this season alone for the first time or if it is a season that brings back bad memories, it will be something that we dread. What can we do about it? I would suggest that perhaps whatever we do we put our focus on others. I can t help thinking that no matter how bleak things may look to us, there is always hope. Hope that there is a brighter future. Hope that together with others life can be better. Have a wonderful Advent and Christmas. With prayers, Geoff Saturday 17 th December Decorating the church This will take place from 9.30am and helpers to decorate will be welcome. Any donations of flowers and greenery and would be appreciated even if you cannot stay to help Sunday 18 th December 6.30pm 9 Lessons and Carols (Please note that there will be no Carol Singing around the village this year so this is your opportunity to enjoy the festive Carols) Christmas Eve 4.00pm Christingle and Nativity 11.30pm Midnight Communion Christmas Day 10.30am Family Communion Page 6
