2 Digital Omnium Gatherum Collection Prepared by: Timmia King And Lopez D. Matthews, Jr., Ph.D May 2018

3 Scope Note This collection consists of a variety of materials dating from the mid-17 th century to the 1970 s, all relating to peoples of the African Diaspora. This is a growing collection; items are added to it frequently; therefore, the images depicted here represent a major part of the collection, but not its entirety. The materials that comprise this collection are so varied and unusual that the typical description Individual Manuscripts does not apply. The name we have given it is Omnium gatherum, a Latin term meaning a miscellaneous collection of persons or things. There are letters; documents related to slavery, manumission, rebellions, and the Civil War and Reconstruction; broadsides, flyers, speeches, diaries, manuscripts, stamps, buttons, poetry and songs, pamphlets, printed programs, logbooks, scrapbooks, newspaper clippings, minutes of meetings, photographs, magazine and journal articles, reports, and maps. There are originals and some photocopies. All items were either donated or purchased. It became apparent that as the collection grew, a finding aid to the individual items was needed that could be used by researchers to access items in the collection, and, at the same time, be easily updated and maintained by staff. This digital finding aid covers only those items that have been digitized. As more items are digitized the listing will be updated. As noted in the acknowledgements, part 1 of the digitization of the OG collection was finished with support from the Association of Research Libraries.

4 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Many people are responsible for the completion of this finding aid and digitization project. I would especially like to thank the American Research Libraries for the providing me the opportunity and the funds to complete this project. I would specifically like to thank Mira Swearer, the Program Coordinator for Grants Administration, Amy Eshgh, the Assistant Director for Program Coordination, and Mark Puente, the Director of Diversity and Leadership Programs, who all served as my main points of contacts to ARL and the Fellowship for Digital and Inclusive Excellence Advisory Group. This Groups oversaw the creation and the management of the Fellowship for Digital and Inclusive Excellence. I owe a special thanks to all of the faculty, staff and fellow student workers at Howard University s Founders Library with whom I came in contact while completing this project. Their encouragement and companionship meant so much to me. I am especially grateful to Professor Rhea Ballard-Thrower, the Executive Director of Howard University Libraries and the Moorland- Spingarn Research Center, for her role as my mentor and her everlasting support. I will forever be grateful to Dr. Lopez Matthews, Jr., the Manager of the Digital Production Center and the Digital Production Librarian, who spent countless hours supervising me, teaching me about the process of digitizing and preservation, double checking my work, and always encouraging me. Without all of the above, the completion of this project would not have been possible. Thank you all. Timmia J. King
