1 Telephone JOHN D. POPE, JR. Attorney at Law June.3, Remington Road Birmingham, Ala Baptist Historical Collection, z. Smith Reynolds Library, Wake Forest Unit"ersity,?. o. Box 7777, Reynolds Sta tt on, Winston Salem, N. Car Dear Sirs: Re: P~e ~arnily I am doing research on my ancestors and find that Rev. Thomas Pope of Halifax County, N. c. was a Baptist preacher and died about March His father Thonas Pope wrote a will dated July 4, 1760 which was probated in May term of court in 1762, shortly after Thoms the nreacher died. Thomas the Preacher or the elder as stated in his father's will had a younger brother Thomas and brothers names Robert, William, Jesse, James and Obediah. It appears that all of the Thomas ~ope family moved down to Duplin, (subsequently Sampson County) after the death of their father. Do you have any early records on Duplin or Sampson County church records that might mention their names. TTilliam started the trek and moved to Duplin in James ~ope moved to DeKalb County, Ga. in about 1830 with four sons, Able b; 1810, James 1lf b. 1812, Felix b.1822, Lewis b, Would youx please advise me of the oldest churches in Duplin and Sampson Counties so that I might search or write to the Pastors of these churches to see if the above Popes were members. Sincerely,
2 THOMAS POPE (from Morgan Edward's notebook, p. 27) Born in 1728 at Quehooky in (Virginia.)(f. 13 says "The word "Virginia" is canceled in the original. Kehukee was probably not settled so early as In his Materials Edwards says that Pope "was born near Blackwater in Virginia") Bred a churchman; embraced the principles of the general baptists in 1750, and had the ordinance administered by William Surgenor. Ordained by Mess. Surgenor and Hart, in Soon after he embraced the freegrace scheme and took the care of this church. [Fishing Creek?] Died 1763, and was buried at Quehuky. He married Alcie Ford, by whom he had children named, Amos, Edy. HISTORY OF N. C. BAPTISTS, Volume I, p. 234 by: G. W.
