He also welcomed guest of Frank Adorjan, Klaus Axman and NAB Exec. Trainees Grant Williams, Justin Smith and Andrew Arnold. President s Report Greetings all, Following last weeks unanimous decision by members to support 10 school children who are still traumatized by the effects of the tragic bushfires I have proposed to the board we provide $500 for surfing lessons and meals. Here is a letter from Brendan Delaney:- 2

3 Hi Peter, Thanks for taking the time to consider how you may be able to assist us on our uplifting visit to the Gold Coast. Please have a look at the information attached as an explanation of what our program is offering and why. Our visit to the Gold Coast is running from Sunday 9 th August to Wednesday 12 th (4 days and 3 nights) and we want to use the healing properties of the water and beach as a stark comparison to the bleak and burnt environment they are currently immersed in. My intention is to have surf and kayak activity as well as a visit to Sea World to interact with dolphins and snorkel with tropical fish to provide a connection to the natural environment that has been lost due to the recent events. Uplifting physical experiences are required as a way to deal with post traumatic stress symptoms, which are currently contributing to significant withdrawal and disengagement at school. I look forward to hearing from you and again thank you for your time and thoughts with respect to the young people affected by these devastating events. Kind Regards Brendon Delaney Education Coordinator Operation Newstart I believe we are off to a good start for the year living up to our reputation just having too much fun. Last week we were all surprised to discover that our guest speaker Bill Potts (who could not attend due to flu) stand in was his newest employee past Broadbeach member Michael Purcell. Well he really had us all rolling in the aisles with his past impressions of his GSE selection. I had the pleasure of inducting our first member for the year Duncan Burdett Rotarian from Cleveland Club who has moved to the Gold Coast, welcome Duncan. Next week will be another great night with our own Honorary Member Eddy Sarroff. Eddy is always a very entertaining speaker not to be missed Peter Gowans Man behind the badge Stuart Baumann It was like reading the flyleaf, with no time to read the wonderful book that followed. Five minutes was a mere glimpse into a fascinating life of travel and adventure. Trained as an electrician, spent time in Alaska, worked in a Canadian pulp mill, sailed to Australia from 3

4 Liverpool, worked in many places in Africa, including Durban. Met his lovely wife Patsy traveled overland through Afghanistan, married in Brisbane and founded Miami Power Tools on $4,000. Now how on earth can you do justice to that in five minutes thank you Stuart for a fascinating glimpse into your incredible biography. Stuart spent quite a while working with Jaycees before we had the good fortune to welcome him as a Charter Member of Broadbeach Rotary Club. Secretary Brian Members who were absent last week were advised to collect the new member details list from John Harding. We have received copies of, The Gold Coast and Surrounds Entertainment Book for sale to our members - $50 (incs. $10 to our club), gets you a whole host of discount vouchers for restaurants, retail outlets, bungy jumps, theme parks and lots more. (I still have a few left for next week, for those who missed out). Youth Chairman Malcolm Daviess Urgent plea for members to participate in NYSF selection process to take place at Bond Uni Sunday 26 July 9am to 1pm (lunch supplied) 41 students will be interviewed for 3 places in a new forum in Perth. Malcolm will attend, how about joining him? G.S.E. nomination forms for outgoing mission to North Carolina will be available shortly members are requested to nominate suitable participants. Service Projects Chairman Ray Milton 4

5 Ray Introduced four young Trainee Executives from NAB, as part of their training programme they will each perform two days of community service and Ray has nobbled them for duty on our Sausage Sizzle. Membership Chairman Graham Sivyer Graham announced that the major International Meeting on September 15 th will also be designated a Membership Drive Evening and members are urged to invite potential new members. Graham is trying to locate any surviving stock of the wallet size What is Rotary cards for distribution any clues???? New Member It was Graham s pleasant duty to introduce Duncan Burdett, a new member transferring in from Cleveland Club, near Brisbane. Duncan moved to Queensland in 1992 and owns a powder coating business. Duncan and partner Anna have 8 children and recently moved to Burleigh Waters on the Gold Coast, he is transferring into our club following a short membership in Cleveland. President Peter inducts Duncan Burdett into the Fellowship of Broadbeach Rotary, he was welcomed by all members. 5

6 Lloyd Yelland Lloyd advised members that PDG Bob Bowden, known to many of us, is seriously ill in hospital and currently in a coma our best wishes for a speedy recovery go to Bob, and thoughts and prayers to his family. Lloyd also brought to our attention that he is a member of Blue Care and two other Age Concern organisations, their members may well be able to benefit from the scooters which have recently been donated to us. Lloyd will liaise with Uwe to discuss what we have available. Sergeant Russ If he enjoys himself any more, he may burst and we may bust!!!! Assisting him in his evil designs this evening were Bunyips Kevin O Brien and Cec McPaul. 6

7 Raffle winner Keith Hawton Heads & Tails winner no joker there my friend guest from NAB Justin Smith Guest Speaker Michael Purcell Michael was introduced by tonight s Speaker Host PP Chris Thomsen it was noticeable that there were a few pale faces amongst the audience as it was realised that Michael was our former member who had been a Sergeant at Arms extraordinaire even to rival the dreaded Russ, was he making a comeback to inflict more pain???? No, it soon became clear that Michael was acting as a stand-in for his boss Bill Potts, who had come down with flu. Q. Why do they bury lawyers 28 feet deep? A. Because lawyers are good people deep down!! Michael proved to be a great source of lawyer jokes, which he obviously enjoyed, he outlined his career as a Police Officer, reaching the rank of Senior Sergeant before moving into the role of Police Prosecutor. Michael remained a Police Officer for 25 years he only stayed so long in the hope of winning our Police Officer of the Year Award sadly he was disappointed. He enjoyed this prosecution work so much he decided the Law was for him, and began to study law seriously. Following academic success he joined the Bar as a Barrister in 2003 and began prosecuting offenders in 2005, mainly Gold Coast murderers and other local celebrities he must have tired of putting perps in the slammer because, following a short period of regulatory work with the Department of Natural Resources, protecting indigenous heritage sites, he joined the boutique law firm of Potts Lawyers and began a new career in criminal defence. Michael s first experience of Rotary was as a candidate, successfully proposed by Russ Hutchison of Broadbeach club, to join the 1996 GSE Team to visit Cornwall he spoke highly of this experience. The hospitality he received was overwhelming and caused him to seriously increase his waistline measurement he had the opportunity to sit in the cockpit of a 747 (try doing that nowadays!!). He met Rick Stein and visited his restaurant in Padstow Rick, for non foodies, is a world famous seafood chef and restaurateur. Following this wonderful experience Michael joined Broadbeach Rotary Club and moved from prosecutor to persecutor in his famous Sergeant s role. 7

8 To quote an old Scottish saying, Will ye no come back again. On receiving his well earned memento glass from Speaker Host Chris, Michael observed that he was happy to note he could not see any of his current clients in our assembly yet!! Broadbeach Joker Two guys were discussing popular family trends on sex, marriage, and family values. Stu said, 'I didn't sleep with my wife before we got married, did you?' Leroy replied, 'I'm not sure, what was her maiden name?' 'Mr. Clark, I have reviewed this case very carefully,' the divorce Court Judge said, 'And I've decided to give your wife $775 a week,' 'That's very fair, your honor,' the husband said. 'And every now and then I'll try to send her a few bucks myself..' A doctor examining a woman who had been rushed to the Emergency Room, took the husband aside, and said, 'I don't like the looks of your wife at all.' 'Me neither doc,' said the husband. 'But she's a great cook and really good with the kids.' An old man goes to the Wizard to ask him if he can remove a curse he has been living with for the last 40 years. The Wizard says, 'Maybe, but you will have to tell me the exact words that were used to put the curse on you.' The old man says without hesitation, 'I now pronounce you man and wife.' Two Reasons Why It's So Hard To Solve A Redneck Murder: 1. The DNA all matches. 2. There are no dental records A blonde calls Delta Airlines and asks, 'Can you tell me how long it'll take to fly from San Francisco to New York City?' The agent replies, 'Just a minute.' 'O K. Thank you,' the blonde says, and hangs up Two Mexican detectives were investigating the murder of Juan Gonzalez. 'How was he killed?' asked one detective. 'With a golf gun,' the other detective replied. 'A golf gun! What is a golf gun?' 'I don't know. But it sure made a hole in Juan.' Moe: 'My wife got me to believe in religion.' Joe: 'Really?' 8

9 Moe: 'Yeah. Until I married her I didn't believe in Hell.' A man is recovering from surgery when the Surgical Nurse appears and asks him how he is feeling. 'I'm O. K. but I didn't like the four letter-words the doctor used in surgery,' he answered. 'What did he say,' asked the nurse. 'Oops!' While shopping for vacation clothes, my husband and I passed a display of bathing suits. It had been at least ten years and twenty pounds since I had even considered buying a bathing suit, so sought my husband's advice. 'What do you think?' I asked. 'Should I get a bikini or an all-in-one?' 'Better get a bikini,' he replied. 'You'd never get it all in one.' He's still in intensive care.... The graveside service just barely finished, when there was massive clap of thunder, followed by a tremendous bolt of lightning, accompanied by even more thunder rumbling in the distance. The little old man looked at the pastor and calmly said, 'Well, looks like she's there.' 4 WAY TEST Of the things we think, say and do: 1. Is it the TRUTH? 2. Is it FAIR to all concerned? 3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? 4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
