It has been another great week in the best Club in District 9640 where we were fortunate to have another high profile guest speaker in Brian Paton, the Detective in charge of the Singh Family triple murder in the northern suburbs of Brisbane. I found Brian s talk amazing and by the stunned silence in the room, so did everyone else. Obviously the heinous nature of this crime was still evident with Brian in his emotions during his address. Brian was ably backed up with David Mackenzie. It is times like this that we are proud of our dedicated Police Force and we can see how 10 years of our Police Officer of the Year Program has been worthwhile. Well done Ray Milton. We welcomed visiting Rotarian Warwick Aingar from Ricarton Club, New Zealand again and Partner Agnes Adorjan. Sergeant Russell entertained us again and did a great job relieving us of approximately $68 for our general account. Noel Talked about the Carrara Markets Car Boot Sale and advised the people that do not or cannot work on the boot sale days to advise him, so he can create a roster. In one form or another we will be fully covered for Public Risk Liability either by Rotary Insurance or by a separate public risk insurance policy. The car donated by Bargain Spares is now painted pink and yellow thanks to Uwe and John Kerr and will soon be up on the container with the new bunting advertising the Car Boot sale. Kevin O Brien and I installed the wall air conditioner in the new building at the shed, so now the rain won t get in the hole. Members are reminded that it is World polio Day on 24 October and Brian Pearson, District Polio Chair will organise a function at our shed on that day with profits going to the Polio Program. This Month is Rotary Membership Month and with this in mind, we should be vigilant in seeking new members. We have a new Member prospect in the wings and Tony will follow her up to attend a meeting. I was pleased to see Hon. member Ian Cowen back with us after Hospital and that he has recovered. There are 3 members who have not paid their subs and these are now very much overdue. Please pay up so we can pay our Rotary and District Subs account.

I have previously requested suggestions on a new name for our shed. We still only have one suggestion as The Broadbeach Rotary Hub from Bruce Kuhn. I like this suggestion as the shed is now the hub of all our fundraising and social activity and it fits in with the inner part or the hub of the Rotary Wheel. I will close off the request for new name options in two weeks and the Board will make a decision on the new name for the shed. We now have an official invitation from our New Zealand Sister Club of Tauranga to their 70 th Anniversary along with Kasaoka Club in Japan on March It is also the 10 th year of our 3 sister clubs agreement. Please mark your diaries for this celebration and I thank Bill Rex who has volunteered to organise our trip. Thank you to all members who work tirelessly on our Projects and running of the Club in General. Thank you also to the sausage sizzlers last week for a job well done. Next meeting is at the Anglican Drop Inn Centre in Surfers Paradise opposite to the southern entry to the Watermark Hotel. Bob Jordan will send out a map and I will organise the shed bar contents - wine $4, Beer $4 and soft drink $2 at the event. The meal is $25 for main of Beef casserole and bread and butter pudding desert. The greater part of the $25 will go to the Centre as a donation for the homeless. Rotary shed social nights will commence again in September and I have invited our Cluster Club Group. Have a good week. Hoo Roo John

Scribe from Last meeting "A proud autobiography of profound devotion to duty, by former Detective Senior Sergeant Bryan Paton, who summarised his more than 28 years of experience with the Queensland Police Service". And most particularly, the case of the 3 Singh family members--- murdered by the friend of one of the family members at their Bridgeman Downs home in April Bryan has led protracted difficult investigations into murder--attempted murder--kidnapping- --conspiracy and armed robbery. He was trained as a major and organised crime investigator and studied at Monash University in police investigation and management. On the job, he described being beset with "The Good- the Bad--and the Down Right Ugly" in society. Over more than 25 years, Brian was the senior officer in charge at several offices in the Brisbane Metro. Area, supervising specialised squads including investigations into major crimes and Armed Hold Ups. He was awarded "The National Medal and Clasp" and the "Queensland Police Service Medal and Clasp' for meritorious ethical good conduct throughout his police service. He has Certificates of Recognition and a Bravery Medal being recognitions from the QPS and the State Coroner`s Office. Brian was accompanied at Rotary by former serving Queensland Police officer and relative, David McKenzie. This was the first time that Brian had spoken publicly about details of the shocking Singh s murders. The severity of the matter has had a lasting impact on Brian & his investigating team. Brian Joined the Police Service in 1980, with the personal desire to become a good, ethical Policeman. A goal that he surely achieved. He described "triple O calls as being responded to within 3 minutes. "Policing was a real vocation, protecting those who could not protect themselves." He was in the CIB Drug Squad at the period of the Fitzgerald Enquiry. The politics of the era were difficult. The Police trained Professional Standards were being challenged. Awful for serving members of the force. Lots of good Detectives left the service. The Armed Hold Up Squad was said to be corrupt. He found it difficult to carry on, while maintaining his goal of integrity and honesty. While establishing his credentials in the CIB and working toward Inspector Rank in March 2003, he was suddenly confronted with a Stabbing & Drug offences. These matters had their briefs efficiently and quickly prepared and presented by early April, a rapid satisfying result. At this point of his career, he felt relaxed and happy in the job. That was until 2PM on the 22nd of April when a message revealed that bodies had been found in a spa tub, in The Pine Rivers District. Could this be true? The matter became life changing for the investigators to endure. The 3 siblings were aged from 11 years and the cause of the deaths was cruel and violent. Brian was thrust into this catastrophe. There was chaos-enquiries- phone calls--the media`s searching-- The first 48 hours of the enquiry were crucial. Brian had no rest for several days and he took no days off, for a 6 week period. In the investigation, he was determined to "step-up for as long as it would take, to carry out endless interviews-while maintaining the correct focus". An exhausting task over the next 20 month period. The crime scene remained secure for over one month. The cost of restoring the property was $180,000.

The house remained the scene of great emotion, for the family. And Police were seriously moved by the scene, too. Issues were further complicated through trying to meet the Hindu religious beliefs of the family. The bodies were retained for 3 months. There was a strong suspect, Sica--he was warned not to attend the funerals. Although warned off, he still attended, as it was suspected that he would. He was instructed to" move out immediately--or be carried out!" His attendance was part of his defence strategy. He is not that intelligent, but manipulative. He was on parole from previous offences, while he played on the family. Meanwhile, Police continued re checking & following up the hundreds of statements & interviews. A further 3 months went by. Unfortunately, the crime scene had been tampered with at the time of the offences. Sica continued with mind games with police and the surviving family members. He used the internet to target the family. On April 25th., Sica assisted Police at the crime scene. Clearly, he was the suspect. The 3 children had been unrecognisable by their parents, which added to their grief. The lengthy Police Investigation added to their stress. The parents trust had to be won over. There were emotions, cultural and religious issues for the parents to overcome. The mother made an attempt on her own life, in the same Spa Bath. "How could anybody be so cruel?" In 2004, the family moved interstate. Meanwhile, after a 24 month investigation period, there was a level of criticisms from within the Police Service, which did not assist the task of investigation. There were no smoking guns available to the investigation. Some informal Police interviews proved to be valuable to the case. The matter was a most challenging matter to solve. Victorian Police even appeared on the TV programme, 4 Corners. Key to a successful outcome, was dedication coupled with management support. An 18 hour interview was conducted, with Sica s father, Carlo attending. Carlo, a migrant was difficult with the Police. Their complicated family issues further complicated the circumstantial evidence, held by Police. Senior Police were worried about the strength of the evidence on hand. The investigating officers were being challenged by senior Police, who were not used to such a case. Brian was ordered to take leave. He became un-well, requiring surgery. He felt let down by the pressure of Policing, from above. Through this dissatisfaction, most of the investigating group had left or resigned. Brian deserved a lot better for his endeavours. He has shouldered the issue painfully. Sica was convicted in The bereaved family suffered terribly. It took a great effort on Brian`s part to visited the family at Easter in He is irreversibly linked to the family and its adversity. Brian s address to the Club might be seen as a way for society to recognise the sincere efforts of this fine investigative Policeman. Meanwhile, the 10th anniversary of our Club`s inspired "Police Man of the Year" awards is to be held later this year. Our Club continues to recognise the outstanding support and security, provided to our society by our Local Police Service. scribe- Ian Cowen.

FRIDAY FUNNIES HA HA HA WARNING.. RISKY HUMOUR FOLLOWS.. IF YOU FEEL YOU WILL BE OFFENDED PLEASE DO NOT READ. There are three guys in a boat with four cigarettes. They have no matches or anything and were trying to come up with a way to smoke their cigarettes. "I got it!" said the one guy as he threw one of his cigarettes overboard. "Why did you do that?" yelled his buddy. To which he replied, "To make the boat a little lighter." "This week a giant tortoise was on the loose here in Southern California. Drivers on the freeway were shocked to see something moving so quickly." - Conan O'Brien It has been a while since I included some classic Steven Wright "I woke up one morning and all of my stuff had been stolen and replaced by exact duplicates."

Borrow money from pessimists -- they don't expect it back. Half the people you know are below average. 99% of lawyers give the rest a bad name. A conscience is what hurts when all your other parts feel so good. A clear conscience is usually the sign of a bad memory. If you want the rainbow, you have got to put up with the rain. All those who believe in psycho kinesis, raise my hand. I almost had a psychic girlfriend... but she left me before we met. After directory assistance gave me my boyfriend's new phone number, I dialed him -- and got a woman. "Is Mike there?" I asked confused. "Umm, he's in the shower," she responded. "Please tell him his girlfriend called," I said and hung up. When he didn't return the call, I dialed again. This time a man answered. "This is Mike," he said. "You're not my boyfriend!" I exclaimed. "I know," he replied. "That's what I've been trying to tell my wife for the past half-hour!" From Neil My favourite Robin Williams line was something like: I come from a family with big feet and big hands. You know what that means ladies yes, big boots and big gloves!! "The inherent downside in a life of pursuing women is the possibility of inadvertently catching one." Anonymous

After a long-overdue checkup, my dentist sat down with me to go over all the work I would need on my mouth. Her total estimate was $9,200. I gasped. "For that kind of money, I could get a tummy tuck and silicone implants." "But what about your smile?" she asked. "If I had all that done," I told her, "I guarantee no one would be looking at my teeth." A small boy was looking at the red ripe tomatoes growing in the farmer's garden. "I'll give you my two pennies for that tomato," said the boy pointing to a beautiful, large, ripe fruit hanging on the vine. "No," said the farmer, "I get a dime for a tomato like that one." The small boy pointed to a smaller green one, "Will you take two pennies for that one?" "Yes," replied the farmer, "I'll give you that one for two cents." "OK," said the lad, sealing the deal by putting the coins in the farmer's hand, "I'll pick it up in about a week." Two buffalo were standing on the range when a passing tourist said, "Those are the mangiest, scroungiest, most moth-eaten, miserable beasts I have ever seen." One of the buffalo turned to the other and said, "You know, I think I just heard a discouraging word." There was this lady who was visiting a church one Sunday. The sermon seemed to go on forever, and many in the congregation fell asleep. After the service, to be social, she walked up to a very sleepy looking gentleman, extended her hand in greeting, and said, "Hello, I'm Gladys Dunn." And the gentleman replied, "You're not the only one ma'am, I'm glad it's done too From Janine A ninety year old aboriginal elder sat in his humpy eyeing two government 'Welfare' officials sent to interview him. One official said to him: "You have observed the white man for 90 years. You have seen his wars and his technological advances. You have seen his progress and the damage he has done."

The elder nodded in agreement. The official continued: "Considering all these events, in your opinion, where did the whitefella go wrong?" The elder stared at the two government officials for over a minute and then he calmly replied: "When whitefella found the land, blackfellas were running it. No taxes, No debt, Plenty kangaroo, Plenty fish, Women did all the work, Medicine man free, Aboriginal man spent all day hunting and fishing, All night having sex." Then the elder leaned back and smiled: "Only whitefella bloody stupid enough to think he could improve a system like that." From George Q: Where do cows go on their first date? A: To the moo-vies. Q: Why did the talking bird join the air force? A: He wanted to be a parrot-trooper. Q. Where do rabbits learn to fly? A. In the Hare Force. Q: Why couldn't the pirate get to Davy Jones' Locker? A: He didn't know Davy Jones' combination... Q: What do you get when you cross a lobster with a baseball player? A: A pinch hitter.
