3 Spokane Mental Health Chaplaincy By Pastor Alan Eschenbacher and Richard Sola Over the last month, you have heard and read a lot about All-Saints Lutheran taking the lead on creating the Spokane Mental Health Chaplaincy Companionship Program. It s a big title that can be a bit intimidating. (And yes, we will be coming up with a shorter name!) We are now ready to bring this dream into a reality! There is more information on page 4 of this newsletter about this new program and I encourage to read more about how it will actually work. But before diving into those details, I want to step back a bit and share a few of my thoughts. All Saints Lutheran reminds me of the children s story The Little Engine That Could. We are a small congregation that tackles big community problems. Big problems like feed the hungry, sheltering the homeless, and caring for those who are uncared, ignored and vulnerable. Even though we are small, All Saints Lutheran is dedicated and determined, just like that little engine in the children s story was determined to get up the mountain, no matter how impossible it seemed. We at All Saints Lutheran are committed to live out our Christian vocation by being dedicated and determined to follow Christ s message of helping others. The new Chaplaincy Companionship Program is just one of many ways in which we practice our Lutheran beliefs. 3 The support from other congregations reminds me once again that All Saints is not alone. We are part of a larger Spokane faith community (Lutheran as well as others) who share a common commitment to living out their faith in service to others. Finally, I am deeply grateful for the unwavering support that All Saints Lutheran has given to supporting the Spokane Mental Health Chaplaincy Companionship Program. It has been four years since we first heard about it, and much water has passed under the bridge since then. I know it seems like we have an uphill battle on our hands as a small congregation with a small budget and challenges paying our expenses each month. I assure you these stewardship issues are always on my mind as well. But for this moment in time consider that, even though we are small, GOD has worked through All Saints and its people to provide comfort and care for large numbers of HIS children these past years. I believe GOD will continue to do so AND will provide the means for All Saints to continue in the mission to which we have been called! The Spokane Mental Health Chaplaincy Companionship Program is the most recent example of God s people doing ministry at the little church in Browne s Addition and I know HE will continue to bless that which HE has created! Thank you to Richard Sola for your help in planning the Mental Health Chaplaincy and for co writing this article!

4 Bringing Hope, Compassion, and Human Contact The Mental Health Chaplaincy Companionship Program So How Will It Work? Now back to the Spokane Mental Health Chaplaincy Companionship Program. So how will it work in Spokane? All Saints will work with other faith-based communities to create teams of companion volunteers. (We already have 8 other congregations who are going to work with us.) Companion volunteers will receive nationally recognized training. (We are now making arrangements for that training in Spokane in early December.) The training will be at no charge to the companion volunteers. (The training costs are covered by the grant fund All Saints received late last summer from Empire Health Foundation.) After the training, companion volunteers will be paired with someone with mental illness. Each companion volunteer will have weekly one on one contact with a mental health patient. The contact can be in person or by phone and will be about 30 minutes each week. In-person contact will always be in a safe place. You will be seeing publicity about the new program and the training in local media as soon as we have a confirmed training date. Our program is based on the highly successful Seattle Mental Health Chaplaincy that has a strong and long record or reducing social isolation and increasing support of the mentally ill by pairing trained volunteers with mental health patients. 4

9 ALL SAINTS NEEDS YOU!!! The Dilemma: Two of our five van drivers who volunteer weekly on a rotating schedule to bring members to Sunday worship are retiring in January We need new volunteers to join our ranks on the rotating schedule to become van drivers. The Requirements: Anyone driving the church mini-van must hold a valid Washington Driver s License and will have your driver s license submitted to the church insurance carrier for verification and approval. The more driver s on our schedule, the less frequently each driver is assigned a Sunday to drive. It is necessary to commit to being at the church office by 9 AM on Sunday morning to verify riders and begin the morning pick-up schedule. And, following worship anticipate committing to another hour or more to get everyone home and the van returned to the church. The Number of People Served: The average ridership weekly is four, but that number does fluctuate up and down as individual rider needs may change. The Benefits: (1.) Come to appreciate the camaraderie and fellowship with the weekly riders as you fill spend time with them during the drive to and from the church. It s the BEST benefit of all! (2.) Take value from the fact that your willingness to drive enables other members to continue worshiping as part of our church family. (3.) You ll become as experienced with Spokane neighborhoods as any taxi driver in the city! (Maybe better.) What Next: Contact Teresa Freund in the church office if interested, and Jaak Juhkentaal if you have any questions about this unique volunteer opportunity. Uncle Sam doesn t need you, but All Saints does... Jaak Juhkentaal 9

10 NEW PATHS FOR THE BOOK PARLOR A message from the president of the new Board of Directors To get from my house to the Book Parlor, there are two routes. The first goes two blocks down my street to a left on Broadway, when straight to Walnut. It s a short drive, and it s also just a few stops on the #21 bus. It s a nice bike ride, too, for as long as this weather holds out. The other route is the recent extension of the Centennial Trail, which follows the edge of the river through Kendall Yards, from Summit to Cedar. I can walk it in about half an hour. One of these routes is newer than the satellite images in Google Maps, and I ve seen the other on a survey map from It s an interesting choice to make every day. The Centennial Trail takes me past the construction sites of brand-new condos, while a handful of the century -old housed that line Broadway sit empty, today. At certain hours of the day, the trail is bustling with joggers, cyclists, and retirees walking their dogs, and Broadway is just as busy with people going to work, waiting for their buses, or gathering for programs at The Porch or the food bank on Nettleton. The route down Broadway passes one of the few convenience stores in a neighborhood that the USDA classifies as a food desert, while the other passes some of Spokane s newest, most exotic restaurants. Sometimes it s hard to imagine that these locations are only blocks apart from each other. Those contrasts catch my attention because I think they say something true about our neighbor: we re in the midst of both old and new, great plenty and great need. It takes both of those truths to make and accurate picture of this community s real struggles, or of its true potential. But I also love the fact that, when I get to the store and lock my bike to the post outside, I get to leave that division behind me. Both roads lead to the Book Parlor. Since late this summer, I ve had the opportunity to talk with lots of people about their hopes and ideas for the Book Parlor s future. (I m sure every member of the new board of directors can say the same.) For instance, parents are asking for more activities their families can enjoy together, and there is a real drive for West Central to have a clear place in Spokane s booming literary scene two needs we are very well situated to meet. With the formation of the new board of directors and a new non-profit organization, we are using this moment of transition to seek out just those kinds of ideas, and to learn everything we can about how a small, civic-minded bookstore can help lift West Central to new heights. In other words, this is the time for us to choose a path forward. In every decision about that path, I am guided by the principle that a neighborhood is strongest when it can work together even, or perhaps especially, when it s difficult to imagine how the pieces will fit together. In the meantime, let me say on behalf of the board of directors: thank you for your faith in the Book Parlor, and thank you for being a part of this unique neighborhood. I ve been inspired by the energy and direction this community has for the Book Parlor s mission and I m excited to see what we can accomplish next. Charlie Byers, Board President 2ND ANNUAL HYMN FESTIVAL CENTRAL LUTHERAN 512 S BERNARD, SPOKANE SUNDAY, NOV. 16TH 2PM You are invited to the second annual hymn festival honoring the late Janice Newell s love of hymn singing. As a long time music teacher, church musician and organist, one of her most important goals was to make better singers out of all of us. In the churches she served, she strove to make hymn singing meaningful, joyful and an important part of worship. This year there will be lots of congregational singing with varied organ, brass, percussion, string, and hand bell accompaniments. The Festival Choir will join us as well. For more information: (509) Choir members from Advent, Beautiful Savior, Central, Salem, St Luke and St Mark s Lutheran churches will be singing in the Festival Choir. 10
