3 This November article that follows, was written by Larry Ray, your council vicepresident. Larry and Diane Ogren have agreed to co-chair the stewardship committee this coming season, and I am very glad for that! I found this article full of good humor and good advice and fond memories. Please enjoy! Pastor Alan Fall. We are well into it now, with so much color and so much seasonal activity. Baseball is, of course ending with its giant, last hurrah, the World Series, before shutting down for the winter. Football is into midseason, with all its pageantry and, may I say, violent excess. For those of you who actively seek the outdoors, hunting and fishing are at their peak. The World Series, in particular, resonates with me because of childhood memories. When I was a wee lad, the Yankees dominated the series like no other team before or since. Casey Stengel, their manager, was a rather amusing character (unless you were on the opposing team) who s sometimes impish demeanor belied his baseball genius. So dominant were Stengel and his Yankees in the last mid-century that they won five series in a row, from No other team has ever done that. Stengel, for his part, spoke in interminable sentences that defied punctuation. The writers of the era began to refer to his diatribes as Stengelese. Most notably, he would frequently pepper his lectures to the press corps with baseball record trivia (of which he also had a great grasp) and the closing advice and you could look it up. You could look it up. I sometimes think of Casey s admonishment when I ponder our Christian use of the Bible. I wonder how much we really do look to scripture when we are in need of guidance and, if we only would, how much such reference would assist us? At all Saints we are bound by our constitution to examine, yearly, the state of our stewardship of the congregation and its assets. (Section C , and you could look it up!) Accordingly, the Council will be calling upon those who, for whatever reason, have been unable to give and to partake of the sacraments this past year. We do this with Christian love and concern, with an eye toward helping those who may be in spiritual or other need, and who we can help return to more active participation with us and enjoy all the benefits, spiritual and social, that pertain. Stewardship. The dictionary definition reads: 1. The office, obligations, and duties of a steward; 2. The conducting, supervising, or managing of something; especially, the careful and responsible management of something entrusted to one s care. When I was younger, those young women who tended to the passengers needs on airline flights were referred to and addressed as stewardess. (Humorists of the day suggested that the plural form of stewardess would be stewardi, just as the plural of octopus is octopi, or cactus, cacti.) Later, when women became more assertive professionally and otherwise in our society, this changed. On one flight I was informed, politely, that they were now referred to as Flight Attendants, and that the term stewardess was offensive because a steward was once the title given one who was in charge of keeping the pigs! Be those things as they may, the real question for us as Christians is what does stewardship mean for us? As a congregation, we are charged with maintenance of the various physical assets of our faith buildings, grounds, worship-related materials, as well as food and shelter items with which we serve those in need. Continued on page 4.. 3
4 Not to be overlooked, either, is the need to sustain the spiritual health of our fellow congregants. The physical items noted above are all, of course, ultimately aimed at the maintenance of such health. All of which requires giving. As individuals, we must assess and bear our measure of responsibility. How to best do so? Well, there is scriptural guidance for this as well. And, as Casey so eloquently stated, you could look it up! You are aware, I m sure, of All Saint s position in the community regarding helping the homeless. Deuteronomy 10 (12 20) sets forth the fact of God s ownership of all that is in the universe, his love of the sojourner (travelers and seekers, many of whom are homeless), and assigns responsibility for provision of food and drink to them. I Corinthians 10:26 is more direct, stating simply For the earth is the Lords, and everything in it. Psalm 100 commands us to serve the Lord with gladness. Regarding specific direction on giving, Deuteronomy 16:17 reads Every man shall give as he is able, according to the blessing of the LORD your God which he has given you. I have highlighted as he is able because our ability to give is something each of us needs to consciously examine. The practical side of giving is highlighted in James II: 15-16: If a brother or sister is without clothing and in need of daily food, and one of you says to them Go in peace, be warmed and be filled, and yet you do not give them what is necessary for their body, what good is that? Finally, we at All Saints have experienced severe loss recently. During the past year we lost Eleanor Olson. While some of the discussions between Eleanor and others of us at All Saints regarding Stewardship are the stuff of legend, we all need to recall Eleanor s loving, giving heart. Our congregation has been stood in fine stead by the loving gift she bequeathed us upon her passing. Even more recently we lost Christina Simnioniw, Bernice Rosendahl, and Dee Priest. Dee - she of the strong demeanor, yet impish grin and wonderful, dry sense of humor, left us on September 22 nd. While we know from Christ s words on the Cross that our sisters are now with him in a better place, we still suffer loss. Each of them, in their way, had a wonderful, giving spirit. As we ponder our own individual callings to stewardship, I ask that we consider the examples they set for us. In line with the topic of Stewardship and giving, I am listing some scriptural references that provide guidance. And, so, you could look it up Deuteronomy 15:10 I Chronicles 29:9 Luke 6:38 Proverbs 21:26 Malachi 3:10 2 Corinthians 9:6-8 Proverbs 3:27 Matthew 6:3-4 2 Corinthians 9:10 Proverbs 11:24-25 Mark 12: Acts 20:35 Proverbs 22:9 Luke 3:11 Romans 12:8 Proverbs 28:27 Luke 6:30 James 2:
