1 M 86 HAWKINS, (Henry Gabriel) Papers Page 1 Biography Henry Gabriel Hawkins was born on October 5, 1866, in Choctaw County Alabama, to Gabriel Hawkins, M.D., and Martha Elizabeth Lawrence. Under the ministry of his father, Henry was converted and joined the church at the age of five. He was educated in the elementary schools of Alabama and went on to earn an A.B. degree from the University of Alabama in In 1885, the Hawkins family moved to Enterprise, Clark County, Mississippi, after the death of Gabriel Hawkins. Here Henry served as superintendent of education for two years, felt the call to preach and received his license in 1890 from the Quarterly Conference at Enterprise. He was admitted on trial at the 1890 Annual Conference session at Canton and appointed to Manassas, a circuit in Clark County. He discontinued the following session to study at the Theological School at Vanderbilt University. In 1892 he became an English instructor in the Japanese Government Middle School at Matsuyama, after which he wrote a booklet titled Twenty Months in Japan. Henry married Miss Mary Aletha Terral on November 27, They had one child named Henry Terral Hawkins who died at 10 months.
