But wait a minute! Not all that s happened in 2016 is left behind; much that has happened in the past is carried forward to the New Year. Case in point: As I was transferring important events such as birthdays, anniversaries, and other important milestone dates from my 2016 calendar to the 2017 one, I saw all the Host Committee meetings that had been held in the past and realized that all this planning and work will be carried into the New Year. God has blessed His 2017 Host Committee during 2016 and will continue to be with us during the months leading up to the Albuquerque Convention. He will also be with each of us and all the Lois Anderson 2017 Host Committee Chairman Don t forget to check out your District s Website for all the latest updates and downloads for the 2017 Convention! attendees at the convention where we will be empowered by the Holy Spirit, through Word and Sacrament, to proclaim Jesus Christ above all. As we begin the first chapter in this New Year, I encourage you to be fervent in prayer especially for the work of our Host Committee. We pray He will equip us with the workers needed workers who will engage all convention attendees to enjoy the celebration of our LWML s 75 th anniversary at our 37th Biennial Convention in June. We thank God for the freedom He has given us to serve Him in this way what an honor! May God grant each of you peace, contentment, and a joy-filled heart as His special purposes are revealed to you in the New Year. 2 Page 2 We Made It! Well, we finally made it, made it into the 500 th anniversary year. Yes, 500 years ago this year, in 1517 oh, yes, you know Martin Luther used his hammer on the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany. Yes, he used it to pound holes in that door posting the 95 Theses that started a theological firestorm in the Church. Thankfully, oh so thankfully, that firestorm still burns. Because of the incredible writing and teaching acumen of Luther, real churches have popped up all over the world. These churches, that continue both to grow and teach, are ones that have come to know the truths of Scripture, all because of the undying efforts of that one and only Dr. Luther. We are a part of those Churches. We prize, and prize richly, the inclusion of God s Word in nearly everything we do. We prize God s Word in the liturgy, in our daily readings, in our conversations, in our 2017 HC Pastoral Counselor Rev. Gary Piepkorn memorization, and especially, in the Sacrament. We prize it because in it, every time we hear it and eat and drink it, our forgiveness is made real again and again, and again! How good, how exceedingly good, to be a recipient of God s direct intervention into history. For that intervention, which culminated in Jesus life, death, and resurrection, has given to us a life that never ends, life with Jesus in His unending kingdom of glory. May God be praised as we move toward the convention in June where we will highlight the most wondrous connection to the Church that goes on forever into eternity and all because God sent a man named Martin to re-instill the truths of Scripture about salvation through faith, faith in Jesus. All praise be to God! Joy in the Work for the joy of the Lord is your strength (Nehemiah 8:10b) Convention Host Committee Mary Marten, Prayer Committee Chairman It seems hard to believe that there are only about 5 months left before the 2017 LWML Convention in June. When we started planning about 1½ years ago, June 2017 seemed like such a long time. What joy there will be when we gather together in Albuquerque to celebrate the Lord s convention! As Nehemiah said, the joy of the Lord is your strength. Is it your strength too? As we finish final preparations for the convention, let the Lord s joy be your strength. Let Him give you the strength and joy you will need in the next few months. We pray. Heavenly Father, we praise You for the way You have been with the Host Committee as we are planning Your convention. We know it is only through Your leading that we have come this far and we know that we need Your guidance to complete the tasks You have given us. We ask that You give us the strength and joy to finish all we need to do and that You will bless us and all who attend the convention to Your glory. In Jesus name and according to Your will, we pray. Amen. Remember to send me any prayer requests you have for the convention work in your committees or any personal requests you would like to share. I plan to send out prayers every other week or so to keep our minds focused on the One Who leads us all.

3 Be the First Faces of Light in ABQ! Page Transportation Chairman Terri Bentley As 2017 awakens and new beginnings dawn, I have taken on the task of rereading scripture this year from the genesis of time. And as I began, I was struck by the act of God creating Light. Light was gathered to separate us from the darkness and to guide us both by day and night. In Albuquerque, we are also being gathered as those who are reflecting the light of God when we proclaim Jesus Christ Above All. We will be gathering in a city that averages 310 days of sun a year! The international airport is even named the Sunport! Men and women will be arriving by train, plane and automobile. Amtrak and Greyhound have a transportation center nearby the convention center. Albuquerque sits at the crossroads of two major interstate systems, I-25 and I-40. And once everyone is there, there is a public bus system to help navigate a city that only takes 20 minutes generally to cross. As transportation chair, volunteers are needed to be the sunny faces of the LWML that greet all the convention-goers attending 2017 Jesus Christ Above All convention. The workers on this committee are usually the first faces the attendees see when arriving at convention. There are openings with our airport director, Karen Kolke. These folks will welcome visitors as they arrive at the Sunport Airport and direct them to the transportation to the convention center or hotels. All information is provided so you need not be a NM native to greet weary travelers with a sunny disposition. There are a number of districts who have chartered buses to bring their delegations to Albuquerque. Those busses will be greeted by Janet Loomis and her team. You can volunteer to greet the buses and assist with the reloading of buses after convention events. Once attendees arrive to their proper hotels, Beverly Wagner will need workers to greet and guide convention-goers there as hotel hostesses. A place is provided near the lobby so guests can be provided with directions or other information about attending the convention. Again, all the information you need is provided for this task. For those staying at hotels off-site from the convention, there will be shuttle buses provided to and from the convention. We need workers to assist Shelley Stewart in assuring that the convention-goers know how to access this service to and from the proper places. Of course, not everyone comes with an entourage from their district. Many VIPs arrive for a short time to present a speech or attend a specific event at the convention. If you will have a vehicle at the convention and would like to help transport these VIPs to and from the airport, join Carol Bickel and her team of VIP drivers. There are many ways to reflect the light when attending the convention in Albuquerque. When God separated the light from the darkness on the fourth day, He saw that is was good. When we greet everyone in His light by shining Jesus Christ Above All, this will also be good! Looking forward to seeing all your bright and shining faces in ABQ.

4 Page 4 Discover the Southwest!! Cheryl Brunson Tours Committee Chairman Come, see, explore, and taste the scenery and historical centers of the Southwest! How is your society raising funds to send workers to the 2017 Convention? We want to know! Let s spread the word! Workers can include your spouse, your church s youth group, and those with willing hearts. Call for Workers form is on pages 8-9. Call for Workers Myrtle Seiken Personnel Resources Department Coordinator Welcome Workers! Special thanks to all those who have answered the Call for Workers: The convention is coming! Many more volunteers are still needed. If you are coming to convention, please prayerfully consider completing the Call for Workers form and volunteering some time to help. Encourage your friends to also consider joining you in this awesome experience. Ladies in western Idaho are preparing scarves as part of the special dress that identifies convention workers.
