By now, many of you have made your travel plans for the summer in Ikaria and hopefully many more of you have plans to attend the Chicago Convention. Before we get there, I bring the following matters to your attention. SUMMER YOUTH IN IKARIA In 2001, we sponsored a Summer Youth program in Ikaria. This year, we have received information for college students which may be of interest to our youth. The Hellenic Society APadeia@, through the University of Connecticut, is sponsoring a three credit course that will be given in Ikaria the first three weeks of July I have sent the application and instructions to all of our chapters and encourage our youth to take advantage of this program. The class is titled AThe Language and Culture of Greece@. A course itinerary has also been included with the application. Applications should be sent in as soon as possible as the class is filling up fast. It is my hope that our youth will benefit from this unique opportunity. VIDEO DOCUMENTARY Mike Politis and Dean Mougiannis have completed our centennial documentary video. Once again, order forms are available in the Ikaria Magazine and our web site. It is our hope that chapters will purchase these videos in bulk and promote the sale of these videos at their functions. The completion of the video of our history is a significant and defining accomplishment for our Pan-Icarian Brotherhood. FOUNDATION Scholarship applications have been distributed and have been published in the Ikaria Magazine. There are 24 undergraduate scholarships for students in the United States and Canada. Some of the scholarships are merit based and others are need based. The Foundation also has budgeted merit based graduate scholarships as well as scholarships for students in Greece. The scholarship amounts have been increased again this year. Scholarship applications, printed in the winter edition of Ikaria Magazine, must be completed and postmarked by the end of June Ikapia Magazine Page 3

5 PAN ICARIAN BROTHERHOOD OF AMERICA ICAROS REPORT OF THE SUPREME VICE PRESIDENT Dear Brothers and Sisters, We just spent the Memorial Day weekend celebrating the memory of our Forebears. As we step into our Brotherhood s next century we must take pride and honor in our common heritage. Each of us should feel the responsibility of being a contributing member to our respective local chapters. We must grab the opportunity and make manifest what we have been told at each step of life s accomplishments, KAI SE ANOTEPA. We welcome your help. For membership to really flourish many things need cultivation. Connectivity exists across North America, connections at the local chapter, on the national level and between cities. Communication; never have distances been so short. Linked by our great magazine, news and ideas can flow freely and we hope that you all feel that you can contribute. The mission of the Foundation must be easily understood, its actions and accomplishments transparent. Those who are able have a duty to assist, those who have been helped must stay connected and contribute to the Brotherhood in their own way, their philotemo demands it. We must also set shared goals and work with our young adults to keep them active and ensure that they are bonding with each other and building life long relationships as we did. In order to promote connectivity, the president of each chapter will be contacted and urged to exceed last years membership numbers. The central committee is ready to assist and our President is presently visiting every chapter. Whenever possible we need to promote connections among our youth across the brotherhood. Please let me know if you have any ideas that we can discuss. The internet can help communications but the desire must come from shared experiences. Examples of successful promotions that foster these experiences include; the NY ski trip, Pittsburgh s Mini- Convention, Florida s winter dance, Chicago s New Years Eve Gala and Cleveland s 25th March Dance. These functions act as a magnet for youth participation and should be emulated. These promotions ensure our convention is not just a party but a reunion of family and friends. Hope to see you all in Chicago. Love to all, Nicholas Jack Tsalis Vice President Ikapia Magazine Page 5

Also, the current balance in the checking account is $86, COMMITTEE REPORTS Membership Vice President Nicholas Tsalis stated each chapter should reach out in an effort to contact as many Icarians from their area to the Brotherhood. Nick also wants to reach out to scholarship recipients from former years to see how many of them are current members of the Pan Icarian Brotherhood. The Vice President stated our goal is to exceed last year s total of Chapters will be recognized at the Chicago convention for the greatest percentage increase in membership in each of their respective size categories. 8 2004 Chicago Convention President Horiates reported that mailers were to be sent out from the Chicago chapter in the next month as well as the spring. Also, convention information will be sent out in the remaining editions of Ikaria Magazine. He has been in contact with Chicago Chapter President Rozina Karnavas to get updates. The Supreme Lodge suggests contacting the hotel immediately as the room block will sell out fast. Finally, President Horiates announced that he will visit Chicago prior to our next Supreme Lodge meeting to show our support for the 2004 Convention Myrtle Beach Convention Counselor George Koklanaris reported that the contract with the hotel has been finalized. Video Documentary A report was given by Secretary Mike Aivaliotis. Mike had spoken with Mike Politis and was informed that the video would be completed by April. Thereafter, Mr. Politis will look into reducing the cost per copy of the video both in CD and VHS format. It is anticipated that production of copies will be completed prior to the spring Supreme Lodge Meeting. A half hour copy of the video was presented to the Supreme Lodge. All members present at the meeting previewed the documentary as the hotel brought in a TV/VCR for the showing. Vice President Nicholas Tsalis commented that the video was a wonderful synopsis of our brotherhood and history and looks forward to the completion of this project. Centennial Album President George Horiates reported speaking with Dr. Nikitas Tripodes for an update. Dr. Tripodes says there are four chapters that have not provided a history as of yet. Also, it is his belief that there may be many historical documents of the Pan Icarian Brotherhood being warehoused at the University of Akron. There was much discussion as to how we can find these documents. Foundation Director Chris Aivaliotis noted that there are Icarian students there and plans on reaching out for assistance to conduct a search for these important documents. Archives The President reasserted the Brotherhoods commitment to the on going development of the Archives and hopes the Foundation will take a bigger roll in their financing. A traveling exhibit is being developed that could visit different cities and be displayed at each convention. Sister Joanne Melachrinos reported that the National Archives will be more than happy to assist in this endeavor. Since war is always in the news, perhaps, we need to revisit the war heroes. She is considering for next year a Veteran s exhibit. We have World War I documents and photographs of soldiers that are without names. Maybe through our travels someone will recognize these faces and attach a name. She will reproduce the photographs and mount them on foam core. Public Relations President Horiates along with his father attended the First Flight Centennial at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. Over 250,000 people were in attendance at the affair. Our President offered his words to the crowd. He linked the history of flight to our small island comparing the struggles and triumphs of our people to those pioneers of flight. PSP Petros Tsantes and PSP George Contis attended the SAE meetings in Greece as the Brotherhood s Ambassadors. Page 8 Ikapia Magazine

16 2005 Myrtle Beach Convention Treasurer Sonja Stefanadis reported that the Wilmington Chapter plans are progressing well and that the chapter has made a request to change some of the convention meeting times as well as to have a President s Breakfast in lieu of a luncheon to accommodate some of the planned activities. It was suggested that Chapter Therma bring its proposals to the Chicago convention floor during its chapter report for feedback from the members. Video Documentary During the luncheon, the members present enjoyed a screening of the final edition of the video documentary. Production is complete and the initial orders from our members have been sent out. The lodge ordered 100 VHS videos and will be selling them during their travels. Finally, the video order form is on the web site and will run again in the magazine. Centennial Album Chapter histories are sill needed from the Akron and Chicago chapters. In particular, Akron may have some of their history on file with Kent State University. George Thomas and Koula Glaros King will assist us and reach out to the University to see if this information can be retrieved. Archives The Supreme Lodge set up its traveling archives display consisting of various items received throughout the year. The items will be turned over to the archives in Pittsburgh at the end of the year. Senior Citizen s Report Foundation Chair Anthony Kayafas and Supreme President George Horiates rendered updates on the estate of John Souroumanis. Any monies received are for the benefit of a retirement home in Icaria. The monies, once received, will be entrusted to the foundation to oversee disbursements. It was also noted that the President and Foundation Chair co - authored a letter to the Bishop of Samos supporting Mr. Kavarlingos and his efforts at the current home. Historian/Records District Governor PSP George Achedafty explained the process of translating old minutes to English and how this project is progressing. Hellenic Culture PSP Petros Tsantes presented a letter from Professor Yanos of Stockton State College of New Jersey requesting a meeting with the Brotherhood regarding sponsoring a professorship in Hellenic studies. President George Horiates stated he would be willing to meet with the professor in the near future. Greek - American Relations The Supreme Lodge is requesting a written report be submitted by our delegates to the SAE Conference in Greece. Also, President Horiates plans on attending the July Krikos meeting and the July 17 celebration in Ikaria this summer. Page 16 Ikapia Magazine

17 COUNSELOR S REPORT The Supreme Lodge received a correspondence from Foundation Director PSP John Lygizos regarding the Pan Icarian Brotherhood s approval from the IRS as an exempt organization. The Supreme Lodge will be filing a return. To this end, the Lodge approved an expenditure of up to $500 for John Ferra, the Foundation CPA, to file an informational tax return. GOVERNOR S REPORT District Governor Nick Manolis had previously reported on the Chicago convention. He motioned that the Supreme Lodge support the convention with a gold page ad. The motion was seconded by Vice President Nick Tsalis and was approved. District Governor PSP George Achedafty reported on the Los Angeles and San Francisco chapters. Particularly, he plans on visiting with Lychnos this summer as they have a picnic scheduled in July. Written district governor reports were submitted by District Governor Barbara Manners and Kiki Tratras. The reports were accepted as read. FOUNDATION REPORT Foundation Chair Anthony Kayafas presented a report on the status of the Foundation. There are 24 undergraduate scholarships for students in the United States and Canada, as well as scholarships for graduate school and students in Greece. The Foundation balance as of April 30, 2004 is $ 2,647, IKARIA MAGAZINE REPORT Former Ikaria Magazine editor Stella Thomas was recognized. She had spoken to the new editor, Niki Plutis and conveyed the request that as much information as possible should be transmitted to the editor in electronic format. She explained that the new editor has streamlined the process of publishing the magazine. OLD BUSINESS Treasurer Sonja Stefanadis also has been serving as database manager. She emphasized the importance of getting the dues receipts from the chapters as soon as possible, certainly before the convention. The practice of chapters bringing receipts to the convention creates a nightmare for data entry purposes. She asked for everyone s assistance in this regard. NEW BUSINESS Supreme President George Horiates had applications on hand for college students wishing to participate in a three credit course given in July in Ikaria. The course is sponsored by the Hellenic Society Padeia through the University of Connecticut. Applications were sent to each chapter president in the last Supreme Lodge mailing Ikapia Magazine Page 17

18 PRESIDENT S REPORT Supreme President George Horiates reported that we have made improvements to the web site, which now includes the President s messages and current Supreme Lodge news. The next step will be to include a youth chat room. The President thanked Dean Tripodis, the web site administrator, for his efforts. The President also took time to thank Chapter Icaros member Anna Aivaliotis for her assistance to the President throughout the year. Anna was responsible for transferring photographs and letters to electronic format, maintained Supreme Lodge s and addresses and assisted behind the scenes in many ways. The President had many goals this year including an administrative manual for the chapters. He hopes that this project will be considered by the lodge next year. President Horiates also asked the members present to support at the convention a proposal increasing the Supreme Lodge officer travel expense for the Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Counselor and District Governors. Increasing their travel expense reimbursement from $500 to $1,000 will allow the officers to visit more chapters, participate in more events and will stimulate interest in serving on the lodge. He also asked for the members present to support at the convention a proposal to provide a monetary stipend of $2,000 to the Ikaria Magazine editor. The President will be going to Detroit on June 12 to support Chapter Spanos in its golf tournament as well as will be going to Ikaria this summer. A motion to adjourn the meeting was made by District Governor Nick Manolis and seconded by Supreme Lodge Secretary Mike Aivaliotis. The meeting was adjourned at 5:30 p.m. After the meeting, the Supreme Lodge was transported back to Pittsburgh and attended the annual Chapter Icaros dance as part of the mini convention festivities. The Supreme Lodge takes this opportunity to thank both Warren and Pittsburgh chapters for their assistance and hospitality throughout the weekend. Respectfully submitted, Emanuel C. Aivaliotis Supreme Secretary THE FALL EDITION DEADLINE FOR IKARIA MAGAZINE IS OCTOBER 1, FIRM Page 18 Ikapia Magazine

19 GOVERNOR REPORT District 1 May, 2004 Greetings to the Pan-Icarian Brotherhood, On behalf of the Chapters of District 1 - Pandiki, Atheras, Nea Ikaria, Lefkas, and Koursaros - I offer our best wishes to you all for continued health and happiness. I have had a good time so far visiting with the Chapters of District 1. Over these past few months, each Chapter has been actively keeping up with their local Chapter business, events and fundraisers. Atheras: I was very happy to see the ongoing support that the Chapters of our District have for one another. We are fortunate that we are so close together in this region of the country. Atheras Chapter 12, for example, welcomed President Apostolos Malachias of Pandiki and President Evangelos Pyros of Koursaros to their Icarian Dinner & Dance on Saturday, February 21, I was pleased to see them again soon after my first visit to Pandiki for their Fall Dance. Lefkas: On April 25, 2004, I paid a visit to Lefkas Chapter No.16 with Supreme president George G.A. Horiates and his father George A. Horiates. Chapter President Konstantinos Mavrophilipos and the Chapter membership greeted us with enthusiasm upon our arrival. As it was my first visit to their beautiful leski, I was given a tour and a brief history of their efforts to make it into a home for the Chapter. Afterwards, we participated in the Chapter s meeting, offering Supreme Lodge insights and information on the issues of the Brotherhood. Upon the close of the meeting, we made our way to the kitchen to enjoy a delicious barbecue. Supreme President George G.A. Horiates and District 1 Gov. Nikolaos J. 20 Nea Ikaria: Supreme President George G.A. Horiates and I made another road trip to visit with Nea Ikaria of Port Jefferson on May 2, This time we traveled with our uncle, Past-Atheras President Theodore Pasamihalis, and his wife Maria. They were coming up to see their daughter Olga who is married to Nick Manolis of Port Jefferson. Nick and Olga were our very gracious hosts and offered to take us on a tour of the town that included a walk through the new Church, The Assumption of the Theotokos. Nea Ikaria Chapter President Dean Spanos shows the Supreme President the right way to serve spaghetti. Supreme President George G.A. Horiates and District 1 Gov. Nikolaos J. Horiates Past-Atheras President Theodore Pasamihalis and his wife Maria (center right) join the officers for a commemorative Nea Ikaria photo. Around five o clock, we traveled to the Nea Ikaria s clubhouse for a meeting and macaronada fundraiser. There, President Dean Spanos made us feel welcome. Like our earlier visit with Lefkas, we were able to see the Chapter in action through its meeting. The Supreme President proudly presented his traveling Pan-Icarian Archives exhibit and the completed Pan-Icarian Documentary film. We closed the evening with many heart-felt good-byes. As District 1 Governor, I continue to encourage the committed core of individuals who are willing to shoulder the spirit of the Pan-Icarian Brotherhood through all the adversities we may face. I greatly look forward to meeting with the members of the District 1 Chapters again in Chicago for the Convention. Until then, I wish each Chapter success in their individual endeavors and renewed strength in their common bonds of Icarian Brotherhood. Respectfully submitted, NIKOLAOS J. This award will be a tremendous help toward financing my future studies here at the University of Pittsburgh. I accept this award with the intention to always remain an active member of the Ikarian community and uphold the values of family roots that it embodies. Thank you again! Sincerely, Maria Pantazes January 6, 2004 Dear Foundation Members, Please accept this letter as my thanks for the generous check of $ on behalf of the Scholarship Committee. I am proud to be a member of an organization who has had the forethought to place education as a priority to its young people. My sincere hope is that this practice will continue to help others as it has me. Your contribution allowed me the opportunity to complete my graduate course work this semester at Piedmont College in Demorest, Georgia. The classes I have taken over the course of the last year and a half have helped to enlighten me to all that is new in the field of education. I look forward to applying these new innovative ideas so that my own students may benefit from them as well. Again, I am truly grateful that you have helped me in my endeavor to complete my Masters in Education. I hope my actions and plans as an educator are pleasing to you in response. Sincerely, Nicole Tratras Androutsopoulos March 21, 2004 Dear Mr. Chairman, I am writing to thank you for the scholarship I received from the PAN-ICARIAN FOUNDATION when I was a graduate of the local Lyceum during the school year. I believe that such scholarships are an important incentive for us, the young people who live in the island. Apart from being vital financial help, such donations instill rivalry and willingness to fulfill our ambitions and to excel in our life. On the island of Icaria there are no private schools, no tutorials and not enough money to fund our studies. Thus, it takes a lot of effort, hard work and even personal struggle to study efficiently and to prepare ourselves adequately for university entry exams. As far as I am concerned, during my school years I faced hardship and the lack of educational facilities. As a result, I joined several competitions, one of which involved representing our island in the Parliament where I managed to voice my fellow-students concerns regarding school matters. Two years later, I participated in a E.U. program in Strasbourg for the same purpose. Currently, I am studying Law at the University of Komotini and I am in the second year of my studies. I also study English and take computer courses. My ambition is to do a masters degree and one day become a judge. Once again, I would like to express my gratitude for your scholarship and I hope others too will be as generous to our island as you. Yours sincerely, Fotini Mazari Ikapia Magazine Page 25
