Notes for Gertruida (Geertruyda) Jacoba Homan Claim for damages after Anglo Boer War stated: "Mother of Peter Wheeler who endured considerable hardship, cruelty and imprisonment at the hands of the Boers on account of his refusal to break his oath of neutrality. She surrendered 24 June 1900 at Taungs. At the time of the war she was 14 years a widow and aged over 80 years. She had 4 sons, three on commando and one was sick. Of the three, 1 was taken prisoner at the taking of Pretoria and sent to India. The other two surrendered in One joined a column of British and the other imprisoned at Wolmerandstad for refusing to take up arms again.

8 8 Peter was on Commando from the beginning of the War to the end of Feb I left just before Cronje was taken prisoner and returned to the farm and surrendered 24 June 1900 at Taungs. In the testament drawn up with her husband Peter (Pieter) 16 April 1880, She was identified as HOMAN and not RUDD as previously noted.
