Being an F.O.E member means you ll be a part of helping provide $10 million annually to hospitals, care centers and research facilities across the United States and Canada. For more than a century, the second Sunday in May has been set aside to honor mothers everywhere - and it all started with a push from the Fraternal Order of Eagles. On February 7, 1904, Fraternal Order of Eagles Past Grand Worthy President Frank E. Hering made a public plea to recognize mothers everywhere. A decade later, President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation making Mother s Day a reality. The achievement remains one of the most significant milestones in the history of the organization. From preparing brunch to buying cards and flowers, the spirit of Hering and the F.O.E. lives on through our actions each Mother s Day. While the F.O.E. continues to celebrate and take pride in the creation of Mother s Day, many citizens are unaware of the organization s work toward making the holiday a reality. Hering, a faculty member at the University of Notre Dame, found inspiration for the holiday when he stumbled upon a classroom of students preparing postcards to send home to their mothers. The generous task inspired him to create a day specifically for honoring and recognizing mothers. Serving as Grand Worthy President in 1909 and 1911, Hering used his position of influence to spread his idea for Mother s Day. Soon the enthusiasm swelled throughout the organization and Eagles across the country were eager to see their dream become a reality. Aeries began hosting their own celebrations to honor mothers and finally their hard work paid off as President Wilson designated May 10, 1914, the first Mother s Day. Several organizations have stepped forward in an attempt to take credit for the holiday, but documented evidence shows that Hering and the Eagles were the true founders of Mother s Day. In 1925, the Society of War Mothers introduced Hering as The Father of Mother s Day before an audience of Congressmen at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier cementing his legacy and that of the Eagles as the founder of Mother s Day. As we celebrate another Mother s Day more than 100 years after Wilson officially recognized the Eagles work, we ask citizens everywhere to honor the important women in their lives and remember the passion and dedication an organization shared with the world to make it all possible. 3 The Eagles Cry May, 2018 Page 3 From our Worthy President Kirby Schuler This will be the final note I write as your Worthy President. It s been a real honor to serve you during my time in office. Many things were accomplished during the last year. We raised money for charities and money for a shuffleboard by selling delicious dinners and having fun filled events. With the help of volunteers the yard stays trimmed and the major equipment we have receives maintenance. Volunteers have also made some major improvements to the bathrooms. The Jack of Diamonds is starting to draw a crowd on Saturday nights which helps the social room increase its revenue. Some noteworthy events this May include: Mother s Day Breakfast on May 13 Children s Day on May 19 and the Memorial Day ceremony on May 28 I hope that we can follow the lead our local VFW did by going smoke-free inside our building. As I write this, someone close to me, can no longer be around smoke because of her health. That means she can t come to the Aerie because of the smoke. I m not asking anyone to quit I just wish all of you that smoke would do it outside. I hope everyone is doing well and in good health. Please give Richard the same support you gave me. Be good to each other. See you around the Aerie, Kirby From our Madam President Robin Lewis Hello All!!! Welcome to May! Hard to believe a year has passed for the Auxiliary, Aerie and the Eagles as a whole. There has been a lot of hard work put forth to accomplish our outreach of "People Helping People", by many! I commend you all! Thank you, to all of those who helped and supported me. It has been a great honor for me to serve as your President of the Auxiliary this past year. I'm very grateful for the opportunity. CONGRATS to all involved in acquiring the new shuffleboard table! It is and will be a great addition! May will be no different for happenings at the Eagles. Please reach out and get involved with: Cinco di Mayo, Children's Day, Mother s Day, and Memorial Day to state some of the major events. Of course, there is always some Great Food getting served up and singing with DJ Neal! ATTN: Voting for new officers will occur during the Auxiliary meeting, Monday, May 14, 2018 at 7pm. You will need to have your current Auxiliary Membership card with you. Also, you are required to be present during the entire meeting. Your Voice matters. So please attend the meeting and Vote. Don't forget to come out and support Bingo each Thursday. There is always plenty to be done. Look through this newsletter for a new event that will be taking place on Saturday, May 26th! The Eagle's Bazaar Remember to always put your best foot forward and smile. Kindness is one of the most honorable attributes we can give to another person. Thank you all, for all that you do. It does make a difference. Together there is NOTHING WE CAN NOT ACCOMPLISH! Look forward to seeing you around the Eagles #4379. See you around the Aerie! Robin

4 The Eagles Cry May, 2018 Page 4 From our President, Eagle Riders Patricia Perrine Hi Everyone! The weather cooperated beautifully for the 31 motorcycles and several cages that participated on our Benefit Poker Ride on April 14th. One of the stops on the ride was the American Legion, Post 401 in Hilliard, FL. Not only did they open early for us, the Legion Riders, Chapter 401 generously donated $ in support of Operation Zero - Thank You!! The total raised for Operation Zero was $1,600.00! Thank you to everyone who came out and helped make the day such a huge success! A special Thank You to my fellow Eagle Riders for all your hard work! We hope you'll come join us for dinner on Wednesday, May 30th as the Eagle Riders serve up Dawn's delicious Mushroom Swiss Burgers! You'll have a choice of Fries or Onion Rings along with Dessert for only $8.00. For those who prefer, you may leave off the Mushroom Sauce, or have it on the side. Lettuce, tomatoes & pickles will be available. Dinner will be served from 5:30-7:00pm. Our next meeting will be on Sunday, May 20th at 11:30am at the Aerie. We could actually sit out back at the picnic table, if Ol Man Winter has had enough fun with us and will let the nicer weather stick around for awhile! Ride Safe, Patricia

5 The Eagles Cry May, 2018 Page 5 Trustees Corner We would like to wish everyone a very Happy Memorial Day coming up at the end of the month. Time sure does go by fast. There have been many things going on around the Aerie and it is thanks to several folks that have been working hard on their own time to get things done. There is a new shuffleboard table in the Social room. I believe it is currently the only one in the county, so come on out and challenge your friends! Thanks go out to Pete and several others for accomplishing this. The bathrooms are almost done and things are looking pretty good in that area. All of this takes time and volunteers so thanks to those that have been involved. Our new patio roof should be completed this month and that has been an exhausting and frustrating evolution. We have overcome obstacles not of our making, though, and hopefully this will be a great accomplishment for our membership. Time to make use of our new fourseason area. Some of us will be holding events to raise funds to equip the new patio area so please come out and support those events. The Social Room will not open until approximately 2pm on Saturday 19 May as Vicki will be holding our annual Children s Day event at the Aerie. Come out and help with this great event. I am grateful for being selected to be the International Co-Chair for this event at our Grand Aerie International Convention this year in Dallas and I m proud to represent our Aerie which has been involved in this event since it was started years ago. Aerie #4379 actually won the 1st ever Children s Day, which was originally called Child Advocacy Day for years. Thanks Vicki and all of you who have stepped up over the years to Chair this event. The BOT really appreciates the effort that many members put forth to help out and to try and make the Aerie better and better. It takes everyone to do their part, even if it is only taking the trash out or getting ice for the Social Room. Let s keep it going, make it better, and have more fun!! The BOT would also like to thank all of the Aerie and Auxiliary Officers from this past year for a job well done, and congratulate the incoming officers on their selection to serve in their respective offices. Do your best, as that is all anyone is asking of us. Serving our Aerie and Auxiliary is a huge privilege and a great responsibility. Serve proudly! Good luck and there are plenty of folks who came before you who are very willing to help you or answer questions. The best sources for answers are, of course, our Constitution and Statutes, By-Laws and House Rules. They are all available for you to read and understand. Don t just take someone s word for That is how it is, look it up and read it. Thanks to all. Berry College Eagle-Cam screenshots Mount Berry, GA 4/2018

8 The Eagles Cry May, 2018 Page CHILDREN S ART CONTEST The International F.O.E. Childrens Art Contest was featured last month, in the April issue of The Eagles Cry. Follow-up: The three local students who placed in the International Contest were presented with their award money, here in St. Marys, on April 7 th. A spokesman for the St. Marys Eagles said of the competition, "This is a fun way for the students to showcase their talent with a chance to win money, while introducing them and their families to the Fraternal Order of Eagles. Locally, we had over 180 entries this year, about 50 more than last year, and as you can see, it paid off at the international competition. None of the three students artwork that won money in the international competition was among the twelve that placed locally. This speaks to how incredibly good so many of the entries were and how difficult it is to objectively judge them when so many are so good. I know how the local judges struggled; I cannot imagine judging at the international level with literally thousands of entries. 'Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder!' Each of the three students said they had a teacher who encouraged them to enter and one said they had also seen it in the local paper. I will bet each of these students will remember that teacher who encouraged them decades from now. Teachers really do mold our future."
