We stand ready and willing to help you and your Council be successful. From the Vocations Director Submitted by James P. Weiskircher, Vocations Director Andrew Fryml Andrew Fryml grew up a cradle Catholic in Spartanburg going to middle school at St. Paul s Catholic School, and later on to St. Joseph s High School in Greenville. He is the youngest of the family with three older sisters. As a youth, Andrew was involved in Scouting, attaining the rank of Eagle Scout. He had attended the National Scout Jamboree in 2005 and went to Northern Tier High Adventure Scout Camp in Minnesota. As a scout, he also fulfilled his Duty to God by completing Parvuli Dei, Ad Altare Dei, and Pope Pius XII Catholic religious emblems. He was active in the youth group at Jesus, Our Risen Savior and in high school was on the Diocese of Charleston s E-Team, helping to put on retreats for middle and high school students. What led you to consider the priesthood? It was no particular event, but the Lord kept sending me small signs. I would hear things in the homilies or readings that would catch my ear and make me think, is God really calling me? It was over the span of four years that the Lord kept pulling at my heart in so many ways. The tug kept on becoming harder and harder to resist and then finally I said YES! When asked why did you decide to become a diocesan priest and not join a religious order? Andrew replied I have always been attracted towards the diocesan priesthood because of its humble role of love and service to the people. I have never been drawn towards a religious order because my heart has always been with the Diocese of Charleston. What do you like about Seton Hall? StAndrews Seminary? I love living in a community, even though it can be very challenging at times. I am able to pray, study, eat, and have fun with all these men who are all discerning the same call. The brotherhood that is forming in the community is truly a blessing and I am truly grateful. Aside from that, the education that I am receiving is very challenging and excellent. What is your favorite passage in the Bible? 1 st Timothy 4:12Letnoonehavecontemptforyouryouth,butsetanexample for those who believe in speech, conduct, love, faith and purity. Anything that you would like included in your bio? I am proud to be studying for the Diocese of Charleston as a First Degree Knight for the Council 9575, Spartanburg, SC.

3 The Palmetto State Bulletin 3 December 2010 From the State Membership and Retention Director John C. Robertson, PGK, PFN, FDD. With nearly 1.8 million men and their families in the Order, we have only just begun to realize our true potential for membership growth. Now is the time for us to rally more Catholic men and their families to join us in our cause and to carry out the vision of our founder, Father Michael J.McGivney. This was the recent call for action from our esteemed Supreme Knight, Carl A. Anderson. These inspiring words should be sounding throughout the State of South Carolina and calling to action each one of our member Knights to seek out those Catholic men who would wish to become Knights of Columbus but have never been approached to join our ranks. I have heard it so many times when interviewing a potential candidate that this was the first time that anyone had approached him to become a member of our Order. Why? Have we become so lethargic in our duties as a Knight that we find it too bothersome to introduce ourselves to potential candidates? I really don t know why this happens as I have always found it to be a very pleasant experience meeting men and their families. When looking for new members, what better place is there to start than with your own family or circle of friends? With the holidays fast approaching, now is a perfect opportunity to talk dad into joining, or give your son or nephew the gift of K of C membership. When the opportunity arrives, take the initiative and start a conversation about joining. Be confident that you will be able to answer their questions no matter in what direction the conversation will go. The Knights of Columbus, through its many programs and activities, assists individuals in so many ways that there is sure to be something that will appeal to anyone who wants to help his community, Church or family. When interviewing a candidate, always have on hand some of the following information about our Order: A form 100 Copies of flyers including Did You Know (#1267), The Greatness of a Man (#4496), Members/Spouse Fraternal Benefit (#2773), Family Fraternal Benefits (#2761) and other appropriate council publications. Facts about the Order s insurance program Give a clear explanation of how membership has benefited you and your family. The Order s website, <kofc.org> to do some research on their own The most important thing to remember when recruiting candidates, or members of your family, is to take the opportunity to talk about the Knights and then ask them to join. With nearly 1.8 million men and their families in the Order, we have only just begun to realize our true potential for membership growth. Now is the time for us to rally more Catholic men and their families to join us in our cause and to carry out the vision of our founder, Father Michael J.McGivney. From the State Youth Director Dante Tomasini As we finished the Soccer Challenge last weekend in Columbia with an excellent turnout of over 20 of our youth from around the state we must not forget that the youth of our Council areas still have an exciting contest ahead of them The Knights of Columbus Substance Abuse Awareness Poster Contest is scheduled to be judged at the mid-term Grand Knights workshop in Columbia near the end of January. Now is the time to start getting your area youth involved and excited about this contest - may I suggest a trip to your local schools and bulletin announcements as well as a handout to your local CCD classes. This is an event that all of us need to get behind and make as successful as our Soccer and Basketball Challenges - it certainly is every bit as important Lets lay a few ground rules out for your information: 1.) All posters must reflect the theme of Alcohol Awareness and Abuse and/or Drug Awareness and Abuse 2.) Each Poster must be original work including the concept; layout; slogan and any images of a single person - in other words these can't be class projects where ideas are shared 3.) Posters must be the traditional 11x17 size and may be in color or black and white - if a special substance such as Pastels or Chalk or Charcoal are used then these posters should be covered in clear plastic 4.) Each poster should be submitted with an official Knights of Columbus Substance Abuse entry form - please be sure that the name and age of each entrant is clearly visible on the back side of the poster For you Youth Directors, Supreme has an official Poster Contest Kit which can be ordered from our Department of Fraternal Services, 1 Columbus Plaza, New Haven, CT Time is short and although most of us are busy at this time of year with the Holidays; PLEASE take a few moments and get this up and running in your councils The rewards will be great for all involved - Hoping to see your contestants posters in Columbia at the GK Workshop next month

4 The Palmetto State Bulletin 4 December 2010 From the State Ceremonials Chairman Ronald G. Povero, PSD, FM Worthy Grand Knights and Members of the State Council: The letter below is from the Supreme Council Ceremonial Department. This doesn t mean that you can just read all parts of the 1 st Degree but is to be used as a tool to help get your people and back-up people qualified to perform degrees. Remember the first impression that you had when joining the Knights of Columbus; your Degree Team will want to create that same impression for our new members joining us. The Supreme Knight has announced an orderwide initiative that permits the reading of the First Degree Ceremonial. Every council is now empowered to conduct its own First Degree Ceremonial. A Ceremonial CD is provided that includes music, the narrative parts of the Chancellor, and Deputy Grand Knight. Certified First Degree Ceremonial Teams are not affected by this initiative and should continue to conduct the First Degree Ceremonial frequently. To fully participate in this important orderwide initiative the following guidance will aid councils that are less experienced in conducting the First Degree Ceremonial: Every council should conduct the First Degree Ceremonial frequently and on short notice, when necessary, to facilitate the entry of members into our Order The council meeting is an ideal location to conduct the First Degree Ceremonial, however, it may be conducted, prior to, following, during or separately from the council meeting Robes are not required to conduct the First Degree Ceremonial, however, councils with robes in good condition are encouraged to wear them Councils that have obtained Ceremonial Baldrics should continue to use them Councils that do not have Robes or Ceremonial Baldrics available should conduct the First Degree Ceremonial wearing coat, tie, and jewel of office, until such time that Ceremonial Baldrics can be purchased Ceremonial Baldrics are available from our Official Suppliers Each First Degree Ceremonial Team should have multiple members available to serve as back-ups for each role, so that, a degree is never postponed or cancelled due to a lack of personnel Use high quality music equipment to play the music and Ceremonials continued on page 9 First Degree Standings Notes NOTE: COUNCILS INDICATED WITH AN ASTERISK, NEED TO HAVE TEAM CERTIFIED First Degree Standings Ronald G. Memorandum of Understanding received from Supreme WASHINGTON Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and The Indian Health Service (IHS) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) which will help both agencies improve the health status of American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) Veterans. The IHS-VA MOU outlines a new plan for enhanced coordination, collaboration, and resourcesharing that will draw on the strengths and expertise of the two agencies. This memorandum of understanding is a renewal of the important partnership between the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Indian Health Service. It represents VA s commitment to American Indian and Alaska Native Veterans through associations with the Indian Health Service and tribal facilities throughout the nation, said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki. The partnership further expands VA s capability to serve those Veterans within their communities and provides increased access for Veterans in extremely rural areas. The MOU will facilitate greater innovation at the local level between IHS, tribal, urban, and VA programs. While recognizing the importance of a coordinated effort on a national scope, the MOU also emphasizes the necessity and importance of tribal consultation for local adaptation. This will be accomplished by increasing available services, improving the delivery of care by sharing programs, developing new models of care using the latest technologies, providing culturally competent care for beneficiaries, and increasing the quality of care though training and workforce development. This MOU between the IHS and VA provides a fi rm foundation for collaboration to meet the needs of the AI/ AN Veterans who have served our nation, said Dr. Yvette Roubideaux, IHS director. It is an important step forward Patriot s Corner continued on page 8

Washington DC March for Life Update: The bus schedule from Columbia to the Pro-life March in Washington has been adjusted.. they will stay an additional night on Monday, January 25, to rest up prior to returning to Columbia. This will be a great event..please sign up and experience the time of your life! Call Cathy Schmugge at (803) to reserve your seat and hotel room. We will be there to join you and the Bishop marching side by side all the way to the Supreme Court House. St. Cyprian is summarizing in the article (below) just exactly what our earthly challenge in life is. He hits the nail on the head (of course). It s not easy to carry out his prescription, however. Jesus knows that. He has dispensed graces through Holy Mother the Church to help us achieve His calling for us to be perfect as My Father is perfect. Do you expect to achieve perfection? Neither do we but, we must strive to be perfect. We must also strive to help our Catholic brothers to achieve perfection also. That does not make us their superior...that makes us their fellow combatant in the holy war on evil. We shall fight side by side and we shall die side by side. Our task as Catholic Brothers of the Knighthood is to promote Life in all it s aspects. This is a difficult challenge. We will meet resistance at every corner. That is exactly why a strong prayer life is so important to Pro-life advocates. We need guidance and we need strength for endurance. Prayer will achieve that!! The Blessed Mother has promised us that in the end she will triumph. God will triumph. The Church will triumph. That is our consolation --- and we must endure the fight. Always remember, Rejoice in hope, be patient under trial, persevere in prayer. Romans 12:12. Saint Cyprian of Carthage Christ Teaches Us to Pray This excerpt from a treatise on the man s mortality by Saint Cyprian of Carthage, bishop and martyr (Cap 18: CSEL 3, 308).. Our obligation is to do God s will, and not our own. We must remember this if the prayer that our Lord commanded us to say daily is to have any meaning on our lips. How unreasonable it is to pray that God s Will be done, and then not promptly obey it when he calls us from this world! Instead we struggle and resist like selfwilled slaves and are brought into the Lord s presence with sorrow and lamentation, not freely consenting to our departure, but constrained by necessity. And yet we expect to be rewarded with heavenly honors by him to whom we come against our will! Why then do we pray for the kingdom of heaven to come if this earthly bondage pleases us? What is the point of praying so often for its early arrival if we would rather serve the devil here than reign with Christ. The world hates Christians, so why give your love to it instead of following Christ, who loves you and has redeemed you? John is most urgent in his epistle when he tells us not to love the world by yielding to sensual desires. Never give Pro-Life continued on page 8

8 The Palmetto State Bulletin 8 December 2010 Pro-Life continued from page 7 your love to the world, he warns, or to anything in it. A man cannot love the Father and love the world at the same time. All that the world offers is the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and earthly ambition. The world and its allurements will pass away, but the man who has done the will of God shall live forever. Our part, my dear brothers, is to be single-minded, firm in faith, and steadfast in courage, ready for God s Will, whatever it may be. Banish the fear of death and think of the eternal life that follows it. That will show people that we really live our faith. We ought never to forget, beloved, that we have renounced the world. We are living here now as aliens and only for a time. When the day of our homecoming puts an end to our exile, frees us from the bonds of the world, and restores us to paradise and to a kingdom, we should welcome it. What man, stationed in a foreign land, would not want to return to his own country as soon as possible? Well, we look upon paradise as our country, and a great crowd of our loved ones awaits us there, a countless throng of parents, brothers and children longs for us to join them. Assured though they are of their own salvation, they are still concerned about ours. What joy both for them and for us to see one another and embrace! O the delight of that heavenly kingdom where there is no fear of death! O the supreme and endless bliss of everlasting life! There, is the glorious band of apostles, there the exultant assembly of prophets, there the innumerable host of martyrs, crowned for their glorious victory in combat and in death. There in triumph are the virgins who subdued their passions by the strength of continence. There the merciful are rewarded, those who fulfilled the demands of justice by providing for the poor. In obedience to the Lord s command, they turned their earthly patrimony into heavenly treasure. My dear brothers, let all our longing be to join them as soon as we may. May God see our desire, may Christ see this resolve that springs from faith, for he will give the rewards of his love more abundantly to those who have longed for him more fervently. Congratulations to Casey and Kellie Price Norrid who were named as Council 6076 Family of the Month for October in recognition of their prolife work. We realize that Casey and Kellie are just one example of all of you pro-life leaders who are working bloody knuckles to the bone trying to save human life and to preserve life as God designed it from conception to natural death. Always remember that the calling is worth the effort. There is no higher calling than to give one s life for someone else. Become a saint, our dear brothers and sisters, and continue the pro-life effort. God and His Blessed Mother are counting on you. Holy Father Defends and Accents LIFE During his homily for the Vigil of Nascent Life on November 27, Pope Benedict described the intrinsic connection between the unborn and Christ in the womb. The Pope reminded the world that Advent is a time to reflect on the gift of human life. The beginning of this liturgical year helps us to relive the expectation of God made flesh in the womb of the Virgin Mary, God who makes Himself small, He becomes a child, it speaks to us of the coming of a God who is near, who wanted to experience the life of a man, from the very beginning, to save it completely, fully. And so the mystery of the Incarnation of the Lord and the beginning of human life are intimately connected and in harmony with each other within the one saving plan of God, the Lord of life of each and every one of us. Pope Benedict continued to highlight this connection as he described the embryo as a new living being, dynamic and wonderfully ordered, a new unique human being. So was Jesus in Mary s womb, so it was for all of us in our mother s womb.

9 The Palmetto State Bulletin 9 December 2010 Patriots Corner continued from page 5 in our work to better serve all American Indian and Alaska Native people. In addition, this agreement will address joint emergency, disaster, and pandemic preparedness and response planning. Implementation Work Groups will be established to address each of the main goals outlined in the MOU. An annual progress report will be produced the VA and the IHS. The VA and the IHS are now organizing workgroups to make progress on implementing elements in the MOU as soon as possible to benefi t veterans. The MOU expands the partnership initially established through a previous MOU in 2003 that improved communication between the agencies and tribal governments, and developed strategies for sharing information, services, and information technology. The MOU can be viewed at announcements/documents/3-od pdf Time and service as a Sir Knight is one of the most valuable commodities we as Catholic gentlemen give to our Catholic Church and our communities.
