Joining her today are: Sallie Barringer, Laurie Frank, Jack Niehaus, Denise Olden, Barb Rider, Janet Schneider, Martha Walker, and Sherri Wellington. Come learn more about us at one of our monthly Visitor Orientations after the service on Jan. 15 or Feb. 5. Childcare is provided. There are membership signings on Jan. 22 and Feb. 12. TODAY Today in Sunday School, your prekindergarten and kindergarten students will be continuing their exploration of their five senses with a lesson on smell. We will be reading Stone Soup and making herb pictures to help us become more aware and appreciative of a variety of smells. Your first to third grader will begin by reading Henry Hikes to Fitchberg. Then, we will finish the lesson by constructing bird feeders to help us explore the web of life. The bird feeders will be made of food items: Cherrios, Ice Cream Cones, and Apple Butter as well as bird seed. Your fourth and fifth grader will spend the class learning about Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks and the bus boycotts in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day (Mon. Jan. 16). After learning about these historic boycotts, students will have a chance to act out part of the story. Junior High students will be speaking with Ann Retford about the recycling program at First Church and learning what they can do to help. 4 Sun., Jan a.m. (following the service) - warm up with chili. Taste seven different kinds, either vegetarian and meaty at our First Church Chili Cook-Off after church on Jan. 22. Cast your votes for your favorites and the cooks will be rewarded prizes. Community Builders will provide sides, chili garnishments and non- alcoholic beverages. This FUNdraiser costs $10 per person or $25 per family with dependent children, entertainment included. Adult beverages, including some craft beer will be available for an additional donation. Updates on US involvements plus review of the most recent Trump Administration nominees for State and Defense Department positions. There will be a tutorial plus handouts on the most effective ways to approach your Congressional representatives. All are welcome. Come share your ideas. Jan. 27, 7 p.m. - Coloring Gathering in the Ellen Hall Room - Everywhere we look we see coloring books. And not the old children s books but elaborate and intricate designs. Why has coloring for adults become so big? Come join us and explore this phenomenon. We'll do some coloring, read what some experts say and add our observations to the mix. Snacks will be served and babysitting will be provided. All ages invited. Although all are invited, if you would prefer babysitting, please let me know by Jan. 22. Just put Carter Fund on the memo line of your check to First Church. Mark Curnutte, Enquirer staff reporter for racial justice will speak at the service. The Carter Memorial Fund was established as a memorial to the life and work of Rev. W.H.G. Carter, an African- American Unitarian minister who founded a storefront church in the West End in the 1930 s. In 2000 First Church and Northern Hills Fellowship apologized to the Carter descendants for the lack of support the UU churches gave Rev. Carter. Since that time the fund has provided $71,500 to assist persons in need.

6 Parents Night Out Parents Night Out (PNO) is back! First, spend an hour exploring the nature of parenting while developing a deeper connection with other First Unitarian parents. Then, revel in two hours of child-free bliss. We will keep the kids for the last two hours while you enjoy yourselves. PNO will be offered as a mini -series, with a three-session course offered on February 17, March 17, and April 21. Topics for each course have yet to be determined, but you should register soon. Registration is required and spots are limited. Must be able to commit to two of the three sessions.
