It hits me every year just as Sam s birthday approaches and August is underway the sun is dipping below the horizon a little earlier each night. I have one of those electronic weather stations at home and it tells me exactly when the sun is set -- it gets earlier every time I look. Although wet, the days are still warmish, but I know that all of a sudden I will notice the change. It will be no time until the leaves begin to change colour. Thinking about the setting sun, the warmish weather and the changing leaves I am aware that change is upon us once more. The back to school sales are underway and time is moving on. At the Church Nursery I have seen the new starts come along all ready to start out on a new part of their life. The seasons and their rhythm do bring a pattern to our days and offer an opportunity to see the world, our activities and priorities afresh. As the new session begins I hope faith and Church can be a priority for you. I believe the sense of belonging, community and being spiritually aware can stand us in good stead for what the new session will bring to our door. With faith and a belief we are not alone, but in God s world, we can be assured of the consolation of faith. The Parishioner September

3 Jesus gives us the assurance we are not alone and he will never leave us or forget us. Having enjoyed the summer may it be a resource for the winter which is really only preparation for the spring. Kindest regards Volunteering in The Boys Brigade Why Volunteer? At BB children and young people get involved in a huge range of exciting activities and adventures, from first aid, abseiling, circus skills, and much more. There s also opportunities to get involved in international work, community action projects, camping and trying out new sports. As a volunteer you can take an active part in some of these fun and exciting activities. Or you can simply help organize activities with the children and young people. BB changes lives Experience tells us that BB changes children and young people s lives, so why not get involved and play your part. BB provides opportunities for children and young people to: have fun play games and sport learn new skills find out about the Christian Faith have new experiences go on a residential (Camp or Holiday) engage with friends BB changes Volunteers lives As a volunteer you will get a great sense of satisfaction from watching the children and young people develop their confidence and skills, as well as have lots of fun. In addition, working to improve your community will give you a huge sense of personal achievement. As a volunteer you ll also gain from the experience by making new friends and learning new skills that you can use at work or put on a CV. The BB will also provide you with training opportunities to build on your existing skills as well as support guidance in your role. What could you do in the time you have? There are many ways of helping out to suit people with different interests and lifestyles. If you are short of time or are unsure if BB is for you, why not give it a go. If you feel there should be more to life than retail therapy and Friday night clubbing, try coming along to the 11 o clock service on Sunday morning. 8 St Mary s Nursery School Please note Church Car Park is closed week-days between and 11.30pm for Nursery outdoor play. Host Charity HOST is a national charity helping to make international students at universities in Scotland and England feel welcome in our countries. What are you doing this Christmas? Many international students across the country will be alone and would love to spend a few days with you. By inviting one or two students to your home this Christmas or New Year you will make them feel welcome here whilst seeing your own celebrations through another s eyes someone who may never have experienced them before. Learn about other cultures, meet new people and make the world a little friendlier! HOST promotes international friendship and understanding. We offer international students at UK universities the chance to spend a short time in a British home to experience life in this country. Students hail from across the world and are eager to both learn and share. Only 21 students enjoyed visits in Scotland during the last festive period. Many others were left disappointed when we ran out of invitations. If you are not available at Christmas, we do arrange weekend visits all year round. To find out more about volunteer hosting please go to www. hostuk.org or contact Anne-Marie on Safari in Madagascar MAF (Mission Aviation Fellowship) has set up a project known as the Madagascar Medical Safari, working with Malagasy medical professionals and pastors to reach isolated people. In Madagascar there are over 19,000 remote villages, hard to reach overland but only an hour or less by plane. A recent team visit to the village of Sahakevo took three doctors, a community health worker and a pastor. The doctors treated over 300 patients, performed 18 operations and gave dental treatment to 140 people. The Parishioner September

9 How often do you pray with your children? How often do Christian families pray and with their children? A recent study of 800 Christians in churches across England has found that nearly 62% of Christian couples pray together on some basis, and 63% pray with their children. As for a parent praying FOR their children, the study found that 42% of parents pray frequently for their children, and 40% of parents just sometimes. The Bible promises us that prayer is well worthwhile: The Lord is near to all those who call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth... he will hear their cry. Psalm 145:18,19. Our church groups what do you think of them? As the autumn gets underway, many churches across the country will be restarting their various groups: house groups, women s coffee mornings, knit n natter afternoons, mums and tots, men s breakfasts, Bible studies, youth groups, choir practice, bands, Sunday schools, and even perhaps a performing arts group. What do you think of the groups currently running at our church? Is there something more that you would like us to consider? Is there some skill that you would like to offer to some sort of new group? Or is there a group in action which you think may have had its day? If you have anything you want to share with us, we would like to hear from you. Please write your comments down, and put in the Session Clerk s pigeon hole across in the hall vestibule and the Kirk Session and minister will certainly consider what you say. 8 The Parishioner September 2012

10 A prayer for anyone going through a storm (Mk4:35-41) Lord when the storm rages, When the wind and the waves seem as if they will overwhelm us, Help us to know the stillness of your presence and your peace. And even if you seem to be sleeping through our storm, May that, in itself, be a reassurance that we are safe. You are with us. You will not abandon ship. You will bring us through any storm life throws at us. We will reach the end of our journey Safely in your company. Thank you Lord, Amen. 11 The Sacrament of Holy Communion We will celebrate the Sacrament of Holy Communion on the morning of Sunday 2nd September. We will use non-alcoholic wine, prepared bread and individual glasses. This is a celebration of the Lord s Supper and is open to all who wish to respond to Christ s invitation. Do this in memory of me.. Luke 22 : 19 Church Kitchen A meeting will be held in the church hall on Thursday 27th September at 7.30pm to highlight changes to the church kitchen hygiene regulations. It is important the following people attend. All food hygiene certificate holders, Sunday tea volunteers and a representative from each church organisation. St. Mary s Kitchen Committee New Session Commence Dates Boys Brigade starts back on Monday 03 September from p.m. The Leaders look forward to seeing the boys then and welcoming any new ones. Shipmates also start back on Monday 03 September. There are 30 boys in the section and for various reasons 3 of their leaders have left, meaning that Lindsey Campbell is looking for more leaders. There is no age stipulation, but bearing in mind that the boys range in age from 5 8 years, this would be more suitable for younger helpers. Without this assistance, it would be very difficult, perhaps impossible, for Lindsey to continue by herself. If you would be interested in helping Lindsey on a Monday evening or would like more information, please contact her on Brownies restart on Wednesday 12 September from p.m. They look forward to welcoming everyone back. 12 Rainbows will restart on Wednesday 12 September at 6.30pm for girls aged 5-7 years. If you would like more information please phone: Agnes Marran on or see her in Sunday school. Ladies Bowling Club resumes on Monday 03 September from p.m. New members will be made most welcome and existing members could perhaps bring along a friend. Everyone will be made most welcome. The Men s Club Now that the Olympics are over, the Men s Club starts again on Monday 03 September at 7.30 p.m. We would encourage any males who like a challenge to come along and try their hand at table tennis, bowling, darts and dominoes. Tea and biscuits are on the menu, not forgetting the odd fish supper night, which is always a favourite. Any enquiries, please speak to Archie Smith or Angus MacNeill. They would hope to see a good turn out on the first night, with lots of new members. Country Dance Class resumes on Tuesday 18 September at 7.45 p.m. in the Lesser Hall, when old dancing feet and hopefully new ones, (ladies and gents), will be made most welcome for an enjoyable evening. The Sunday Kidz Zone and Seekers resume on 02 September and will run every Sunday from 10.45a.m. until 12.15p.m. Kidz zone ages from 3-12 and Seekers 12 +, all will be made very welcome. Come along and have lots of fun with us and share our Stories, games, crafts, puzzles and many more fun activities. Crèche An invitation is extended to all parents who have young children (0 3 years) to come to church and make use of our crèche facilities during worship. The crèche is available every Sunday morning when Christine, Eleanor and Alisha or Helen, Kirsteen and Shona come on alternate Sundays to look after and have fun with the children. Messy Church event will take place on Saturday 29 September, further details nearer the time. Listeners Circle The first meeting of the new session will be on Friday 21 September at 2pm in the Session House. Everyone is cordially invited to come along to hear ninety minutes of a wide range of music selected by Edith Dunn, with a break in the middle for tea and conversation. The Parishioner September L

13 The Guild meets on Friday evenings in the Lesser Hall at 7.30 p.m. They commence their new Session on 05 October. All are welcome, including gentlemen, to come along and enjoy the fellowship and listen to a varied selection of topics throughout the Session year. Kirkintilloch Horticultural Society Annual Flower Show will be held in the Church Hall on Saturday 01 September from pm, with an auction of cut flowers and produce taking place at K 3.45pm. There is also a tea room, raffle and tombola. The Society thanks the Rev Mark Johnstone and Session for the use of the Halls for the Flower Show and also the Plant Sale in May. Thank You A very big thank you goes to everyone who sponsored our climb of Ben Lawers back in June of this year, as part of the WatwerAid200 Challenge. As a result of your fantastic support, St Mary s has raised in excess of 900 towards WaterAid s life saving work in Nepal. Of course, this would not have been possible without our willing band of volunteers, prepared to tackle the climb in less than favourable weather conditions let s just say there wasn t much of a view from the top! 14 Session Report For the second year running, the final meeting of the Kirk Session before the summer break included an open invitation to the Congregation. We had an equal representation of Elders and Congregational Helpers on the night and it was great to be able to express Session s thanks to the folk who do so much for the Church on a weekly basis. We had our usual meeting and arrangements were made for work to continue on the Fabric and Finance during the summer break. Garry Burns advised Session of the Messy Church event the Youth Committee hoped to organise for September and Mary Stirling spoke of the successful Jubilee tea. Our Nursery Committee continue to work their way through the complexities of working in partnership with the local Council and we expressed our thanks to Gillian Thomson for her work as liaison with the Kirkintilloch Herald and welcomed back Euan Kerr to this roll. We have this strange relationship with the Herald in that we don t always ensure we intimate everything that is going on each week in the Herald as if we do not think it merits a mention but if the intimation is wrong everyone seems to have read it! We had a presentation from the Nursery on their Eco-garden. If you have not taken a trip down to the corner behind the Halls to see the eco garden then I recommend a visit. The garden employs old tyres, welly boots and mirrors in an imaginative and colourful display. Finally Mark gave a whistle-stop tour of a year at St Mary s and more importantly talked of some things we could look to do in the coming year. You don t realise until you look back at how busy a year it has been. Mark talked of some of the usual things we do and some of the new things we tried such as Night Kirk and our Eco Festival. However, we are convinced there are members out there who have a skill that we are not yet getting the benefit of or an idea we have not yet explored. 15 Our Annual Accounts in a simpler form Once again we are producing a simplified set of abstracts from our annual accounts which include only the figures for the Church itself. These are intended to show a true reflection of our finances for the year. We have also given some explanations for the variations in the figures from 2010 to 2011 to provide you with a fuller picture of our performance and requirements for the future. 16 As you can see our offerings have remained remarkably steady, however the amounts contributed to our Special Projects Fund totalling 9,721 (including gift aid), have fallen just over 5,000 (these are not included in general offerings). A substantial part of these funds were donated anonymously and we wish to thank the donors. The Gift Aid recovery has reduced substantially this year as a result of the rate of recovery of tax falling from 28p per pound to 25p and we did not have the one off large donation this year. As Gift Aid makes a substantial contribution to our income please either consider increasing your contribution to cover the reduction in recovery rate or if you are a tax payer and have not joined the scheme please ask any elder for a form. We were fortunate to receive a legacy of 1,000 during the year and would once again wish to remind members to think about including such donations in their wills. Income from premises lets has increased this year reflecting the increased charges made. Our allocation for Ministries & Mission from the Church of Scotland has increased once again as we are now into a period where it is based on higher giving levels achieved through G4L. The level we are expected to pay is unsustainable in the long term as over 60% of income generated locally is taken by the National Church. Whilst we are happy to make a contribution to the work of the Church in general and support poorer parishes, we feel that the substantial costs of operating a large church need to be taken into account, not only our level of income. We have maintained the cost of repairs as the Fabric Committee have been very diligent in obtaining good prices for work done. Heat & Light costs have risen very substantially as a result not only of increased charges but the extreme winter weather. We are currently looking into new boilers and other cost saving measures. Insurance costs have also risen substantially as the property values have been reassessed by the General Trustees and rates in general have also increased. The planning for the substantial repairs and improvements to our sanctuary is continuing but as Glasgow Presbytery are yet again re-thinking their Presbytery Plan we are unable to make much progress at this time. The congregation will be kept up to date when any further news is available. The boilers mentioned above and essential repairs to the tower will have a major impact on our finances in the present year and therefore we once again ask for your continued support financially and thank you for your giving to date. We trust that you find the above information more understandable than the full accounts which were presented at the Stated Annual Meeting. 21 JOIN THE BUNCH Poor little lost grape can you help it find its way through this maze to join up with the bunch? CHURCH When someone says the word 'church to you, what do you think of? A quiet building made of stone? A busy place with lots of happy people? Somewhere surrounded by gravestones or busy roads? The Greek word for the church ecclesia comes from a word that means called out. In other words, a church is a group of people called by God. The church is not a bunch of stones or bricks, it is a bunch of us! We are all called out to be a part of the Body of Christ and all of us have a job to do. We may not understand what that job is now but we will in time and with help. In the New Testament, in I Corinthians, chapter 12 and again in Ephesians, chapter 4, verse 11, these types of calling or ministry are listed. We may be teachers or healers, prophets or administrators, but whatever role God calls us out to do we are not alone, because God is with us, giving us the strength and the tools to do the job.
