1 Parish Church Newsletter Dear Friends, September 2015 What a good, exciting and productive summer we ve had! Maybe not so much with the weather, but in the life of the congregation. During the summer months we again worshipped together with Rothienorman as one family, sharing and professing our common faith, which prov to many to be an inspiring experience. May that sense of pride and commitment be carried forward into the autumn and winter months, as we each combine our efforts and zeal in the work and worship of Christ s Body, the Church, and find the due rewards of our faith. Yours Ian Thorburn The now annual thrift shop and garage sale took place twice weekly over the summer, providing a much needed service for the community (and beyond), as well as being a wonderful expression of fellowship and fun, along with the commitment and efforts of those who worked hard and so willingly over that period; as well as providing much needed income for church funds. The Flower Festival held in August proved to be a most uplifting and inspiring experience for all who worked and supported and were amazed at the range of wonderful arrangements and artefacts that transformed the sanctuary, as well as the varied talents and visions of those ideas were brought to fruition. It all goes to show how much can be achieved, and how much vigour can be shown, as people combine their time, talents, visions and efforts and are able to work together to produce results much greater than the sum of all the parts.

Community choir On 28th August we performed a Jacobite concert in the racquets court at Castle. Although the audience were few in number they seemed to enjoy themselves. We are currently practising war songs which we will be performing in Methlick at the end of October and Rothienorman in November. After this we will be preparing for Christmas. We have been asked back to perform in Castle at the end of November and Inverkeithney Church in December.We had a surprise visitor at our recent choir practice. Vivienne Tegg joined us with big hugs all round. She is preparing

3 the music for our next big concert in the spring which will be Show Songs. The Community Choir meets on a Thursday evening from 7-8pm with a fine piece provided by Jean Fisher. No wonder it's so popular!! church choir We organised the Songs of Praise at the end of the Flower Festival. The church looked beautiful and the service was a fitting end to a wonderful weekend where so many people volunteered their services. We are currently practising for the Harvest Thanksgiving Family Service on Sunday 4th October. Practices are on a Sunday morning at am and new members would be made most welcome! Fine pieces by Jean Fisher at 11am before the Service starts at 11.30am The women's group are restarting again on October 28th in Glebe House at 7.30pm. The guest speaker will be Michael Padilla. All new members as well as old friends are welcome. For info please contact Lindy Duncan on In addition to Messy Church there will be a VISION DAY on the 4 th Glebe House led by Alastair MacDonald after the Church Service. This will be a discussion about where we want to be in the future as Churches of /Woodhead. All Welcome. A shared lunch is planned. If you would like to get involved with Messy Church let me know or if you know of any kids that might be interested then let them know or bring them along. Chri stian Aid The monthly stall selling fairtrade goods with profits going to Christian Aid continued over the summer. The first Sunday of the month in June, July and August coincided with joint services at Rothienorman, so the stalls were held there and were well received by all. I am now in possession of the Traidcraft Christmas catalogue, which always has a great selection of Christmas cards and gifts, so if you would like a catalogue to browse over, please let me know. 4 For Christian Aid week in May, a collection of used mobile phones and cartridges was held. 22 mobile phones were handed in, which raised 88. In addition, 54 printer cartridges were also donated, and I am waiting to hear from the recycling company how much this has raised. In response to the devastating earthquake in Nepal earlier this year, 510 was donated to Christian Aid by from funds raised at the Community Choir concert and the May Communion Soup and Sweet event. So thank you to all who have given in any way. If you would like more information or would like to be more involved with Christian Aid, please contact Audrey Clark on Fabric news. Maintenance tasks to be carried out in the near future are the servicing of three boilers and fire extinguishers. The organ also requires attention as several keys are sticking. This will involve changing a pneumatic motor and replacing some lead piping with plastic. Emergency lighting and smoke detectors are also due to be serviced this month. Presbytery news The Equip Day conference on 13th June, held at New Deer was attended by Rosemary Adams, Linda Clark and myself and proved to be a worthwhile experience. The next event for church leaders organised by the Buchan Presbytery Congregations Committee, is to be held at New Deer on the 3rd October from 10am until 3pm. The titles of the Workshops are Creating communities of belonging and How will our children have faith. Details can be found in church. The proceeds from this year s Thrift shop, Garage sale and Flower Festival are as follows:-. Members are hoping to tackle another joint project in the coming months. New members are very welcome.
