3 COG NEWS We have had one or two problems with our syllabus for the second session due to unforeseen circumstances but our meetings are well attended and enjoyed by our members. This month we have had a Bring & Buy sale, a splendid music night with the Old Bores and a recipe and night of blethering! We also learned about Nigel and Victoria Milnes latest trip to Malawi. In March we look forward to hearing from Ann Galliard about the Kilmun Mausoleum, then Peter Baxter will speak about Benmore Gardens before we have a different type of musical evening with Class Barber Shop group. Our AGM is on 25 th March when some new committee members will be elected. We hope to have a fish supper meal to finish off our session. If you have not found us before, please come to our new session in the Autumn, we are sure you will enjoy your evenings with us. From the COG Committee 5 PENCE CHARITY APPEAL It s time to send some more money to our latest charity and this month the money is going to HIPPO in MALAWI. It may take us a couple of more weeks to get it but we would like to send 100 to him and we almost have that amount. We have sent a card to Mr McKay to thank him for the jigsaw that he gave to us. We had good fun playing with it and it s something we can keep and play with again and again. We continue to enjoy each other s company at Sunday School and everyone tries their best and does their best. We are working on a project for Easter and so we will be very busy for the next few weeks. Thanks again goes to all our contributors who remember to save 5 pences for us. From all at the Sunday School 3

5 THE LOST ART OF LISTENING Our eyes are constantly assaulted by fast-moving images. Generally we are static on the receiving end slumped on the sofa, sitting at a desk or part of the increasing and endangered percentage of us who walk the streets staring at their phone screens or who travel in a state of perpetual communication: I m on the train. Often we are not just static, but passive too. The dulling effect of media saturation may play a part in the apparently decreasing ability of churchgoers to concentrate. Sermons, as a consequence, have been shrinking to match our lost skills. Not that there is anything especially holy about a long sermon, of course. But it s worrying that we ve lost our listening skills. Indeed, for the Christian, this is a serious issue. To hear a sermon or a message online is easy; really listening to it is hard work. It requires energy and purpose from a receptive mind and heart: He who has ears, let him hear says Jesus (Matthew 11: 15) and this is a persistent message of both the Old and New Testaments. We are blessed with a communicating God, but so often we turn deaf ears to him. Faith comes by hearing, but the physical act of hearing is not enough: In one ear and out the other as many a mother has remarked; we all know how easy that is. We hear and choose to ignore or we lack understanding and are too lazy to wrestle for the truth. Taken from Daily Bread April June 2012 by Lin Ball who at one time was an editor of Bible resources with Scripture Union If you are lonely come inside and find a friend: if you are burdened by guilt come find forgiveness If you are anxious come find peace in Christ: if you are happy come share your joy: if you are lost come find the Way For in the name of Jesus Christ who is the Way, the Truth and the life and the only way to salvation we bid you welcome here
