2 Can it be? Two years have passed since Jenny, Addison, and I pulled into Hattiesburg claiming the call you extended to us to make Hattiesburg our home and University Baptist Church our faith family. I arrived in the church office on Monday, October 3, 2011, filled with anticipation and surrounded by your love and dreams for UBC. In those first many weeks and months, I tried to spend as much time as I could listening to you, dreaming with you, and learning to love this place for the many reasons that you love UBC. In our first twenty-four months together, we have had opportunities to give thanks to God for the good work happening in and through the people of UBC. I am blessed to be your pastor and to get to work alongside such a faithful and joyous people! I am grateful for the long legacy of mission and worship that has come to define this place over the decades. And I am thankful that you are not done dreaming and growing into our future. In the last several months, we took a gigantic step into our future by retiring our building construction and renovation debt. It is a big deal that we are no longer encumbered by about $10,000 of building debt every month. Now we need to be really honest with each other and ask: So what? What does it mean for UBC now that we have completed the Stepping Forward building campaign? Are we done? Is there more that God is calling us to step forward and do in this place? The truth is, a whole lot of you have already answered that question. You have dreams for UBC to continue growing in faithfulness to the calling of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. You recognize that our community needs a church like UBC dedicated to sacred worship and rich biblical formation, a church that takes serious the call to live the Gospel among neighbors near and far, a church that embraces the calling of all people to serve and share in the life of Jesus. The only way we are going to be able to step forward into these dreams is if we continue to grow in our stewardship efforts. Plain and simple, it takes money. While we all do our best to be good stewards of the money given as an offering to God to UBC, it still takes a significant amount of money to be a missional church, to fund ministries within these walls, to maintain our buildings as welcoming places for people of all ages, and to call and support exemplary staff. UBC has always been committed to low-pressure stewardship efforts and I ll confess, I m not always good at asking for money. And yet, after two years, I m even more excited about all that is and is to come within this place. I m committed to UBC and our future together. Therefore, I can do nothing less than ask for your continual financial support. I can do nothing less than ask you to consider ways you might increase your giving to our budget so that we can have the financial strength to continue growing. 3 The Pumpkin Patch is coming to the UBC lawn October 13-31! The hours will be Monday through Saturday, 10 am until 6 pm and Sunday, 1 pm until 6 pm. Volunteers are needed for this fun event, can you help? Unload the pumpkins on Saturday, October 12, at 1:00 pm. Volunteer to work the pumpkin sales Assist with carnival games at the Fall Festival on Saturday, October 27. For more information, call Kay Behm, Thames Elementary Needs Your Help! Volunteers are needed on Saturday, November 2, to assist with the Thames 5k (volunteers do not run!). If you can help, please call the church office and include your t-shirt size (yes, you get a t-shirt for volunteering!). Volunteers will need to report to Thames at 7:30 on the morning of the race and will be finished volunteering by mid-morning. And if you want to join the action, register to run! 4 Library Spotlight Submitted by Gena Lott Here are some interesting facts about our Church Media Center: We have 3,971 items which are divided into the following categories: Easy (Children), Juvenile Fiction and Non-Fiction, Young Adult, Biographies, Large Print, Fiction, Non-Fiction, Video/ Audio Cassettes, and Filmstrips. Within the 2,248 books in the Non-Fiction Section, the Religion Section s 1,784 volumes are divided under the headings of Bible, Theology, God, Jesus, Humankind, and Christian Church History. There are 1,294 Fiction books, including 64 books in the Large Print Section and 20 Easy books. The remaining 429 materials are Video/Audio Cassettes and Filmstrips. The procedure for checking out an item is very easy. If a Library Committee member is not present to check the item out for you, just use the form provided on the desk. Fill in your name, date, and the Barcode Number (front cover, bottom right of item) and leave the form on the desk. Please use our Church Media Center; there is a wealth of information literally at your fingertips! CBFMS Fall Assembly OCTOBER Northminster Baptist Church 3955 Ridgewood Rd Jackson, Mississippi The annual CBFMS Fall Assembly will be held at Northminster Baptist Church in Jackson, MS, on October This family friendly assembly will have sessions for children as well as adults. Registration forms are in the church office or you may register online at dgrubbs@cbfms.org. 5 UBC in Brief First Sunday Fellowship is taking a break for the summer. The Children s Committee would like to invite the entire congregation to join us as we take our children to Mitchell Farms on Sunday, October 6, at 2 pm. Admission to the farm is $10 ($9 for a large group) and includes a free pumpkin from their pumpkin patch. We will have some picnic tables reserved for resting and visiting. There will also be a handicap trailer for those who require assistance. On October 8, the Primetimers will be heading south to Bay St. Louis. If you re interested in space, you will enjoy this trip to the Infinity Science Museum and Stennis Space Center. The cost is $20 plus lunch. Crafters, bring your project and join other crafters at 6:30 pm, Monday, October 21, in Kelley Hall. Our Fall Festival will be on Sunday, October 27. This is always a fun event. We still need volunteers to help with games, etc. Contact Kay Behm for more information. All Hallows Eve Service will be on Thursday, October 31 at 8 pm. Service will be around 30 minutes and take place in the Memorial Garden.
