2 after Warner Albert Winn remodeled it making it look like a bungalow COMMENTS FROM THE PRESIDENT Tony Smith has recently resigned as chair of the Volunteer committee due to health reasons. If you are willing to fill the position please contact me at: sandra.stacey@charter.net Tony has done a really great job for the society over the years and has assured me that when he can, he will be back as a volunteer but not as the chair. His shoes will be hard to fill. Thanks Tony for all the hard work and many hours you have contributed to the society. I also want to thank Rubye Patch for keeping me updated each month. If it wasn t for Rubye, I believe I would be completely lost. She is another valuable asset to the society. She is so gracious in her praise of others and tries never to forget anyone. Thanks Rubye for your input each month in the Cornsheller. Sandra Stacey THE POWELL/WINN FAMILY FROM HICKORY WILD after the landscaping had established the grounds This month s family history could not have been written without the generosity of Valarie Winn This is Valarie s story. Valerie s family owned Hickory Wild for many decades and generations. Hickory Wild was once an Academy. To quote Valerie It belonged to my family for several decades. my Powell family bought it, Warner Albert Winn (another family in the Clarksville area) remodeled it making it look more like a bungalow The following pictures are from Valerie s private collection. A day at Hickory Wild POWELL FAMILY BOUGHT IT (Continued on page 3) 2

3 VOLUME 35, ISSUE 9 (The Powell/Winn family continued from page 2) Many members of my family have a beautiful sketch of Hickory Wild that was commissioned by one member of my family. Of course that sketch was done after the landscaping was established, and the home was beautiful. Valerie Winn SEPTEMBER 2012 To the worthy principal and his lady, and to Misses Susie White, Jennie Harrison, Belle Williams, Jennie and Minnie Miller, and Nepple Jackson and Messrs T.M. Cross, R.O. Mulligan, N.T. and Henry Conn, C.G. Gariard, A.G. Warfield, and G.L. Pitt lf the committees and Misses Mollie Knott, Elvira Brannon, Victoria Cole and others whose names we do not remember, we return our thanks and the thanks of the Clarksville crowd. THE POWELL FAMILY The Montgomery County TN Powells were descendants of Nicholas Powell, Nicholas was born abt.1630 in Northampton County VA and died 26 March 1670 in Eastville, Northampton County VA at the age of 40. Nicholas married Agnes Johnson 6 June 1661 in Eastville, Northampton County VA. Agnes was born abt in Stratton Manor, Northampton County VA and died 2 Nov in Accomack, VA at the age of 30. Nicholas and Agnes had two children: John and Elizabeth. John son of Nicholas and Agnes Johnson Powell was born in 1662 in Northampton County VA and died 18 Dec in Northampton County VA at the age of 40. John married Frances Mary Wilkins daughter of Nathaniel Vosse and Frances Hunt Wilkins. Frances was born in 1650 in Northampton County VA and died after 1704 in Northampton County VA John and Frances Mary had eight children: The newspaper article below best describes Hickory Wild when it was an academy. Hickory Wild Clarksville Semi-Weekly Tobacco Leaf Tuesday, June 10, 1870 Last Friday Evening we attended a most enjoyable levee at Hickory Wild Academy, near Hampton s Station, tendered the pupils by Prof. And Mrs. Tate. It is a pleasant drive from Clarksville to Hickory Wild through as fine a scope of country as one would wish to see. Evidence of thrift are on every hand. Here is a cottage home surrounded with shade trees that nod a friendly invitation to the patron to stand and wait beneath their spreading branches. There is a wheat field, with its golden grain almost ready for the reaper, and then again a field of waving corn that speaks of well-filled barns in the sweet bye and bye. The next neighbor has a field of tobacco just set that hints of a puffed up pocket book, provided the August glut of worms and the numerous other ills that this plant is heir to, do not cut down the average too largely. As we neared our destination, the bright lights that adorned the grounds lent an additional charm to the appropriately named spot. We were met at the gate by Prof. Tate and a bevy of young men, who immediately took us in charge and proceeded to make our visit pleasant, in which they succeeded to an eminent degree, for we seldom spent a pleasanter evening. The beautiful grounds afforded splendid promenades, and the young people present perhaps the ladies and gentlemen-enjoyed highly until about 11 o clock, when by invitation all adjourned to the school room and partook bountifully of ice cream and? until the promenading and tee-a-tetes were resumed and kept up to a late hour. This enjoyable affair closed a successful term of the school. We are glad to know that Prof. Tate and his competent assistants have met with such encouragement as to enable them to establish the school on a good basis. The attendance the past term has been good, and the indications are that the next term will open with a still larger enrollment of students.
