4 Be a friend on Facebook at Sew N Sews I can't believe January loads us with benefits is coming to a close already. The Sew n' Sews are back working like Beavers again and catching up on all the reports of colds and viruses. Sounds like most of us suffered in some way so we are happy to get back to work. Blessed be the Lord, who daily bears us up. Psalm 68:19 We still need the names of military, prayer concerns and would like to get pictures, addresses, and information of each one (and the branch of service represented) to make a support system to insure them that we care. Please contact Jan Arena with the information. The Church Council is asking for volunteers to help organize a blood drive hosted at Zion. The Red Cross brings in the equipment needed for collection and will provide marketing materials. Red Cross is currently scheduling drives for Jan-March. They ask that Zion provide indoor space, donor recruitment to reach the goal of 25 units, and provide a few volunteers for the day (usually 5 or 6 hours). One unit of blood saves up to three lives. Please contact Polly or church office for more information. We need to decide on a date by January 15th. Thank you. Food Shelf: Second Sunday of the month. They always need canned veggies, fruits, assorted goods, peanut butter, and non perishable items. Thanks to all who help. Vicki WELCA We meet the second Sunday of each month during the 10:00 hour between Sunday Services. Please watch the bulletin for any last minute changes. -Sharon Check the Photo Gallery Zion Web superior.org A Bible study from Gather Magazine, led by Karen St. George, To be announced in the bulletins Coffee Fellowship There is a sign-up sheet on the counter in the Fellowship Hall. 8 Acts 10: On Peter s arrival Cornelius met him, and falling at his feet, worshiped him. 26 But Peter made him get up, saying, Stand up; I am only a mortal. 27 And as he talked with him, he went in and found that many had assembled; 28 and he said to them, You yourselves know that it is unlawful for a Jew to associate with or to visit a Gentile; but God has shown me that I should not call anyone profane or unclean. I should not call anyone profane or unclean. That s Peter s report about his vision on the rooftop concerning food that would not be considered kosher. Remember what Peter heard in his vision? The voice of God saying that nothing that God created was unclean. So now, Peter understands that not just food, but people are created by God and are therefore, not unclean. Peter is ready for the first time to accept the idea that God s intentions are for the whole world, every nation and every person is called to have a relationship with God. Cornelius is not Jewish, but still capable of having a relationship with God revealed through the Son. This is a major turning point in understanding God s relationship with the world. This shouldn t be too much of a surprise. Abraham was given a blessing in order to be a blessing to the whole world. But sometimes we need a little reminder that God loved the whole world, not just some narrow segment known as Jews. Or Christians, for that matter. We should embrace everyone who is created by God. And that s the whole world the world that God loves so much that he sent his son to save. Blessings, Pastor Victor 8
9 Church Council Meeting Thursday, December 21, 2017 Present: Pastor Victor, Polly Lohman, Ken Mertz Jr., Lynn Rochon, Laura Kilner, Linda Moe, Greg Kvam, Tim Ingersoll, Becky Hubbard, JR Pedersen, Don Anderson Absent: Vicky Holm, Marilyn Starstead, Meeting was called to order at 6:03 pm by President Polly Lohman. Polly provided December devotions. Linda will do January devotions. Reports Secretary's Report: Report was reviewed. Motion was made by JR and seconded by Becky to approve minutes. Motion carried. Treasurer's Report: Report was reviewed. Linda made a motion, seconded by Laura to approve the Treasurer s Report as submitted. Motion carried. Pastor's Report: Pastor is enjoying the Logos Advent skits. There have been over 20 people in attendance for the midweek Advent worship services. Pastor Putz will preside over worship on December 31 as Pastor Victor will be on vacation. Pastor s desk chair needs to be replaced as it is falling apart. Tri-State Business was suggested as the place to look at and price a replacement. Logos: (Lynn) Logos will be taking down the greens. As a side note, Community Dinner dates are as follows: the second Sundays in January, March and May. Lynn will take charge of the one in January and Vicky Holm and family will do the one in May. Perhaps Sunday School and Logos families could take the one in March. More discussion to come. Sunday school: (Laura) The Sunday School Christmas Program had around 75 in attendance. Sunday School will resume in January, as they are on winter break. Worship and Music: (Linda) There was discussion around how cards should be sent to visitors who sign the guest book. Council feels that it should be the church secretary s duty to check the guest book on Monday mornings and send cards as needed. Linda and Polly will check to see if there are cards appropriate for this purpose in the church. It was brought to the attention of the Worship and Music Committee that there aren t enough hymnals. The situation will be monitored. Missions: No report. Congregation & Caring: (Marilyn) No report. WELCA: No report. Audit Committee: (Polly) An invitation was made for an individual to fill the opening on the Audit Committee. Polly will follow up after Christmas. Operations & Finance: Three thermostats have been installed in the church on timers, to ensure the best use of heating. The committee is looking to add another light on the cross, and are planning to talk to Brad Carlson about the possibilities. The kitchen faucet has been repaired again. Unfinished Business Nominating Committee Status Update: Aine Merrill, Marilyn Starstead and Eve Bagan are on the committee. They need to fill four spots opening on the Council. New Membership Drive: Polly noted that she looked at the membership report from Shepherd s Staff. She recommended that a Membership Drive Committee should be considered for the future. Preparing for Annual Reports: All reports are due by January 12, 2018, to Pearl. Annual Meeting: Sunday, January 28, There will be one service at 10:00 am followed by a potluck meal and the meeting. Pastor Victor will not be in attendance. He was given council approval to be in attendance at an important family event. New Business 9
10 Christmas Tree: Discussion was held about the difficulty and huge amount of time it takes to put up the sanctuary Christmas tree. Getting a new tree that is not so labor-intensive will be considered if it is affordable and attractive. Further discussion will be entertained at a future date once information is gathered. Credit/Debit Card Giving: It would be helpful to look at ways to allow for easier giving. Additionally, when we have events such as pasty sales, cookie sales, etc., it would be beneficial to provide alternate ways for people to pay. Having the equipment on hand to allow people to make credit/debit card payments on site is an easy to do. Greg will order a card reader from ebay and we will pursue ways to make this technology available in the future. Prep for Annual Meeting: Announcements will be made as the Constitution outlines regarding the Annual Meeting time and date. Next Pasty Bake: March 15-17, Readers and Minister Assistants are needed. Please contact Vicky Holm for more information. A motion was made to adjourn by Tim at 7:30. Becky seconded. Motion carried, and we closed with the Lord s Prayer.
