Presidents Message Summer is upon us in Houston. The real date is June 21st, which by the calendar it s a few days away. To me it means that Seminar Night is done and I m anxiously awaiting the Summer Social. This is in my sorority life. In my life I m expecting vacation and visiting with my children, now grown, in the Chicago area and their families. I know they have planned some great times for all of us. We will go to Six Flags, downtown Chicago, the forest preserve, the Chicago Zoo, and an overnight at a water park. What a great time we will have. My birthday will fall in the middle of it and we will celebrate it with the rest of the country. My oldest son has a farm and we will have a cookout and fireworks. In case you don t know my birthday is the 4th of July. I hope all of you have accomplished your Seminar night and all ready for the fall start. I also hope you enjoy your children and grandchildren while they are out of school. As you know, time flies and their lives will be too busy. Have a safe and wonderful summer. Praying for those who are not well, and may God bless you. You are thy sister, America (Pinky) Stromek Houston City Council Wick 2018 News P a g e 3
Did you know??? Father s Day A customary day for the celebration of fatherhood in Catholic Europe is known to date back to at least the Middle Ages, and it is observed on 19 March, as the feast day of Saint Joseph, who is referred to as the fatherly Nutritor Domini ("Nourisher of the Lord") in Catholicism and "the putative father of Jesus" in southern European tradition. This celebration was brought to the Americas by the Spanish and Portuguese, and in Latin America, Father's Day is still celebrated on 19 March. The Catholic Church actively supported the custom of a celebration of fatherhood on St. Joseph's day from either the last years of the 14th century or from the early 15th century [citation needed], apparently on the initiative of the Franciscans. In the Coptic Church, the celebration of fatherhood is also observed on St Joseph's Day, but the Copts observe this celebration on July 20. This Coptic celebration may date back to the fifth century. Father's Day was not celebrated in the US, outside Catholic traditions, until the 20th century. As a civic celebration in the US, it was inaugurated in the early 20th century to complement Mother's Day by celebrating fathers and male parenting. Houston City Council Wick 2018 News P a g e 4
As members and sisters of Beta Sigma Phi, we always take care of our own especially when they are in need of help. Last year many of us here in Houston were devastated with Hurricane Harvey come through and took away everything thing some of us had. Some had more taken away some less but nevertheless lives where affected. We started a fund and assistant team to help those that needed help with money, clothes, food, furniture, whatever it was that they needed. Margaret Heimberg through the kindness of her heart donated $15, to help the 15 sisters that needed assistance. International also help them by giving them $1, to help that did not need to be paid back. Some are still having problems finishing the repairs in their homes, new or old but at least they received lots of love and money from their sisters. Houston wasn t the only one that suffered from Hurricane Harvey, Florida, Puerto Rico, and Cuba had damages. In the West Coast there were the mud slides and fires, and now there are probably sisters in Hawaii that maybe have lost their home or about you and they will also need help. Because of this, Dolores Fritz and her sisters in Torchbearer Iota have started the Paying Forward International Disaster Relief Fund to help those sisters that may need help now or in the future because of a disaster. In Houston City Council we have the Summer Social, Fashion Show, Sweetheart Ball, and Founder s Day. For each event, there will be 4 chapters that will donate a basket for the silent auction. At end of the year all the money that is collected from these auctions will be sent to the International Disaster Relief Fund from Houston City Council., so sisters, if you haven t already selected the event you want to create a basket for, please contact Dolores Fritz, silverhair_70@yahoo.com or and let her know which one your chapter wants first come first served! 14 Laureate Eta Nu Vickie Buschke & Gisele Medina, Reporters Donna Barnes, Kerry Bost, Lela Burgess, Vickie Buschke, Connie McFall Clark, Kathy Gamble, Judy Hood, Kristi Hopkins, Patti Kallus, Gisele Medina, Laurie Musachia, Connie Noble, Ivelysse Swan The Sisters of Laureate Eta Nu met June 14th at the warm and welcoming home of Kerry Bost where Kerry presented a program on an archeological find of ancient Native American Indians in the Klein area which dated back thousands of years. A truly amazing find! The Sisters welcomed Kathleen Killen who was visiting our chapter that evening; welcome Kathleen. Kerry went on to offer a lovely quilted star pillow and table runner won by Judy Hood. After the meeting, a delicious dinner was served by Kerry. Kathleen Killen visiting Kerry giving program on Ancient Native American Indians Connie leading meeting, Kathy Gamble paying attention. Lela Burgess diligently taking minutes, Patti and Vickie listening Houston City Council Wick 2018 News P a g e 14
Most exciting time of evening, opening secret sister gifts. We know how to laugh and have fun On Saturday, June 12th, Kerry served a delicious breakfast of her famous scotch eggs and other goodies. After breakfast, the Sisters, along with Kerry's daughter (and our legacy), Emmy, toured the Natural History Museum and the John McGovern room of Native American artifacts. Then it was on to lunch and conversation which was very lively considering the previous interesting tour. Kerry and Connie having fun with the totems Kerry, Connie, Kristi, and Patti enjoying exhibits Kerry and Patti getting ready to go to the museum Kristi and Connie getting ready for lunch Houston City Council Wick 2018 News P a g e 15
Please say a prayer for the passing of Yvonne Fuchs, sister of Donna Barnes. Yvonne was a very kind soul who departed this earth too soon and will be missed by all who knew her. Also, in our hearts is the passing of Sadie, who was loved by all the Sisters of Laureate Eta Nu and cherished by her Mom, Kathy Gamble. Sadie might have physically been a canine but, in our hearts, she was a Four-Legged Sister who will be greatly missed. Houston City Council Wick 2018 News P a g e 16
Delta Master Virginia Lee, Reporter Evalynn Christiansen, Jackie Ferrara. Mary Gould, Carolyn Harris, Malissa Janes, Virginia Lee, Joann McClain, Jackie Potosky, Estelle Simecek, Pat Thompson, Claire Wind As the sun gets hotter and hotter in Houston, the gals of Delta Master gather for our June chapter meeting. We sure missed Malisa Janes who is recovering, Claire Wind who is caretaking Harold (most challenging); Evalynn Christiansen who was galivanting in North Carolina with OTHER gals. Marcia Moore was in the country for a long week with and without the grandchildren. President Estelle tried desperately to have order at the meeting but when DM gals get together, silence is NOT on the agenda. BUT SHHHHH works and of course, I was not shy. We all went through the business meeting with speed and then we got in to the SERIOUS STUFF, Happy Talk. Well, Jackie Potosky started by saying she was preparing for her big trip to Italy while buckling down for summer. She had just returned from Austin with some friends. JoAnn McClain meanwhile is beginning to pack for a week in Cancun. This is an annual trek as she is a sun and sand lover. Since her home was flooded three different times at Lake Walden, the family decided to totally rebuild with a higher foundation. Pat Thompson on the other hand was just JULILANT as she announced her daughter Julie will be moving from Seattle to Austin. Well, heck, that s like crossing town in Houston. Pat will blaze a trail to Austin often. Before Julie gets here, Pat and friend Sara are heading to VEGAS for a few days of R&R, oh yeah! What happens in Vegas... Houston City Council Wick 2018 News P a g e 17
Delta Master Jackie Ferrara just recovered from her bout with pneumonia. Estelle Smith is smelling freedom. The Post Oak condo is days away from completion since the flood. Mary is content and Mary Jo (our visitor, and Mary s daughter) went to Seattle for a skating tournament (that s speed skating). Mary is delighted to be able to live stream on her I-Pad. Our trek to the Liendo Plantation was delightful. We followed the tour with a lunch at Ella Ruth s Tearoom in Anderson. We just love the day trips. We re gonna do more. As for me, I received permission from Laura to promote the 2019 International Cruise APPLES TO ORANGES that begins in Manhattan and ends in Miami. It is always a Joy to create travel adventures for our Sisterhood. We have lots of fun. And that s the way it was for May & June for Delta Master Houston City Council Wick 2018 News P a g e 18

Lambda Master Carolyn Kares, Reporter Hope all in sorority are enjoying the beginning of summer and have some fun things in store. Lambda Master does not meet formally in the summer so not too much to report, except for the following - Lambda Master members continue to have smiles as they welcome another longtime Beta Sigma Phi into their chapter. Johnnie Horn, formerly of Epsilon Tau Master chapter, accepted Lambda Master s invitation to join them. Chapter members are beyond excited to have not only Johnnie, but Beverly Fritz as well, join them. Lambda Master s friendship quilt continues to grow! Carolyn Kares spent two weeks in Anchorage, Alaska visiting daughter Amanda and family. She enjoyed the beautiful scenery, cool weather and especially getting to spend time with her grandsons, John and Andy. Andy is enjoying playing on his first T-Ball team and John continues to excel with his teenage team of ball players. Houston City Council Wick 2018 News P a g e 23
Lambda Master The family celebrated John and his achievements in school this year. The school year has been a challenging one for John, having started in a new school, not knowing if he would make friends, do well in a junior high school environment after being homeschooled for over a year and losing his beloved Pop during the Christmas holidays. John worked hard to overcome the challenges before him and was elected President of the Junior Honor Society for next year and was the only seventh grader, out of 270 students, to achieve all A s for the year! We are all so very proud of him. Renee Johnson and Carolyn Kares joined The Arc of Katy Participants and Staff in hosting a Lemonade Stand June 14th and 15th on their parking lot, to raise funds for the Teddy Bear Cop Program. Over $1,200 was raised to help the Program purchase teddy bears which are distributed to special needs students in the Katy elementary schools when they learn about what the police do for those in the community. The Arc of Katy Participants will help dress the bears in mini police uniforms, so they are ready for distribution in the fall. The event was a great at success for all involved. The Summer Social is just round the corner and Lambda Master members continue to work on the committee helping to plan a fun day. Be sure and make your reservations and don t forget your Hat. Your Hat could win you a prize! Houston City Council Wick 2018 News P a g e 24
Torchbearer Iota Dolores Frits, Reporter Bette Fritz, Dolores Fritz, Andrea Hermann, Emily Kelton, Linda Sandoz, Vickie Scheel, Norma Schultz, Delores Wheeler Members of Torchbearer Iota have decided that they will no longer have a call meeting in June since any member that has perfect attendance can attend Houston City Council and make up a meeting. The June meeting was used as a make up meeting but no longer needed. In May I forgot to put in our news so here we go. Norma and David Schultz are finally back to some kind of normal. The new carpet is in and the painting and the repairs are complete. They returned all our belongings an unpacked and put all in their proper place. They had a small (major) water leak in one of the bathrooms and water went into two bedrooms and living room not pretty. Linda Sandoz left May 22 for a long Anticipated sour of Germany, Switzerland, Austria, and Budapest Hungary she had a fantastic time. Bette Fritz s nephew was in the hospital with pancreatitis and also having problems with his heart, please keep him in your prayers. Houston City Council Wick 2018 News P a g e 25
Torchbearer Iota Dolores Fritz has finally removed all of her personal and household items from a storage unit that she has been paying a ton money on since 2013!!! Yipee!! One weekend before the movers took things she and her son took 32 boxes of stuff to her apartment, yes 32 boxes!! In a week they were all gone and things either given away, donated, thrown away or kept. Two weeks later the movers came with furniture and more boxes, 38 boxes, yes, an additional 38 boxes!!! All of the boxes are now gone and just a few things are still laying around waiting for a new home!!! With this relief, talk about extra money in her pocket!!! Bette Fritz had a small slip on a bus going to work but fortunately she reacted quickly and was able to keep from falling all the way!!! June 23, we all went to the Fallen Warriors Memorial to present a check to Cheryl to buy a flag to fly at the memorial when needed. Since we could not buy the flag ourselves, we took a smaller flag just to use for a photo opt. After the presentation we all went to lunch at a little place down the street called Saints, interesting and we had a nice time talking and eating.
