2 2019 Heartland District Plan We have discerned the most important focus and direction our district can take in 2019 is to create a culture of Leadership Development. Definition Simply put, leadership development is a process that increases the leadership capacity of a leader, a church, and an organization. When leaders are developed; direction, alignment, and commitment (DAC) are a result. Other words that define a Leadership Development Culture (LDC) A discipleship-making culture A leadership system A pipeline of leadership A culture of Leadership Development is different from having Leadership Development classes (online and catalytic event). Classes and events are important but developing an LDC requires that we approach leadership development from a high-level, all-inclusive view of everything we do. For instance, the HD has 400 licensed minister and over 10,000 Sunday attendees. An LDC aims at influencing the 10,000 attendees, as well as, the 400 ministers Practical Examples When transforming churches, we look at the pastors, council, and elders as the leaders of the church and train and invest in them collectively. When training Church Planters, we train them to develop leaders and create a pipeline of leadership within their new church. We call it "planting pregnant." Our camps are about developing a leadership culture that reproduces leaders. A leadership development culture differs from a leader development strategy (see the chart below) Hughes, R., Beatty K., & Dinwoodle D., (2014). 3 Our Mission Leadership development is the Heartland District s primary focus as we multiply and transform churches. A strategy to Create LDC Assessment: The process that enables churches and leaders to know where they stand so they can move from their current realities to the preferred future. Tools like 360-degree evaluations, CHAT, and APEST are used to determine a proper pathway to a preferred future. Challenge: Leaders and churches must be stretched (challenged) to learn and move forward. Challenges can come from presenting a new vision, giving the leader a new assignment, and pressing a church to a new opportunity. Support: For a leader or church to grow they must be supported. Support includes resources, emotional support, and, at times, financial support. This support enhances confidence and encouragement. Filters to be developed Church Multiplication Church Transformation Online and Catalytic training events Ethnic Churches Global Partnerships Next Gen Women in leadership Ministry Assessment Challenge Support We are committed and believe if we are held able to accomplish this, it will contribute toward the "transformation of communities through the multiplication of disciples, leaders, churches, and movements locally, nationally and globally." The pages below give a brief description of developing a Leadership Development Culture (LDC) in each objective.
4 Leadership Development HD Catalytic Events - Our catalytic events will be hosted throughout the district and will focus on Soul Care, Developing a Leadership plan, Church Leadership, Women in Ministry, and New Pastors. These will be one and two-day events. HD Online Classes These classes will be offered in the spring and fall semesters on Canvas. HD POD Plan - This is a personal development plan for HD leaders. In 2019, every Senior Pastor will develop a POD plan. HD New Pastors Orientation - This two-day retreat follows our On-Ramp (online) class. HD Church Plant Training - This is our training for church planters (see Church multiplication section). HD ELNs - The ELNs for 2018 are: Clinton, IA; Indianapolis, IN. HD Internships - Each year we develop 10 interns (18-21 years old) through our camp internship program. The interns received hands-on ministry experience, they learn to work within a team, and they experience a personal spiritual life component at camp. This internship has been very fruitful in raising up young leaders. HD Residencies - Clinton, IA and Indianapolis, IN HD Team Development- Coach training; Supervisor Doctoral program; Convention, Fall Conference, and Winter Leadership Training. HD Hispanic Leaders Retreat This is annual Hispanic leaders retreat.
5 Church Transformation HD Church Transitions - With large amounts of pastors facing retirement, we believe that there is a great opportunity to see churches transformed through church transitions. HD Assessment- We will continue to use various forms of assessment tools. For every church transition, we use assessments including: Pastoral profile, SWOT, and others. HD Discipleship - We are asking each pastor to fill out a POD for The plan will help the leader chart his or her personal growth and development. We will ask each pastor to enroll in at least one leadership development course (online or catalytic event) scheduled to launch in February. We will continue training and leadership development through online classes, divisional training events, annual Fall conferences, and regional catalytic events. The Heartland District's matching funds are directly related to the church plant's ability to raise funds, be administratively healthy, and an emerging development of Discipleship, Community, Leadership Development, and Church Multiplication. o Tier 1 qualified matching funds of $5,000 o Tier 2 qualified matching funds of $15,000 o Tier 3 qualified matching funds of $20,000 HD City Plan Initiative o Des Moines City Plan o Indianapolis City Plan o Chicago City Plan o Detroit City Plan HD Church Planters Website - Continue to refresh and update NextGen Launching Points for NextGen Ministry o Summer Camps - Elementary, Youth, Young Adults & Special Needs o Youth Winter Camps o Spring Young Adult Retreat
