2 September/October 2018 What a great meeting we had at Cocoa Beach over the September 14/16th week-end, even though we only had 36 members and guests there. Two of those who were there were DMOR Mauri Price, first president of the chapter and Thomas DOC Norwood. Always good to see the Doc. We also had one new member attend: Chris Nelson has joined the chapter. Chris is in Orlando to attend Rollins College for two years. He is from the 7th SFGA and will return there after schooling. Welcome Chris, it s a pleasure to have you with us. We had a gentleman come to just the hospitality room: Ben Densley dropped by and said hi. He had served in the 5th SFGA and then flew for one of those outfits we don t talk about too much. We hope to see Ben again at a future meeting. Mike Stover also made an early appearance in the hospitality room. Mike it was great to see you also. Brian & Natalie and BUDD Vines who had been at Cocoa Beach for a week, came by to say hi. They didn t stay for dinner but returned to the Villages. We ll see them in SOAR. Bruce Koch and Nancy Furbish came by the hospitality room for a while and it was great to see them. Bruce has notified us the he wants to transfer to Chapter XXI. We will make that happen. Don Brown signed up but Don had a medical issue and they couldn t come. Don, we missed you. Three very special members came also. Suzanne Gaspard, Ginny Billingsley and Ingrid Luff-Currier, three of our chapter widows, were in attendance. Nancy Furbish is also a chapter widow. A reminder to all widows, you are always welcome at the meetings and dinner is on the chapter. Therefore, it is very important you make your hotel and dinner reservations by the cut-off dates provided by JD Bath. He and Shirley are sponsors for the Christmas meeting in Lakeland. The most expensive monthly cost the chapter incurs is the printing and mailing of the newsletter. Therefore, if you have a computer on which you are able to receive , you will not get a snail mail copy also. Please let me know if you are getting snail mail and are able to get the version instead. 3 HEALTH & WELFARE 1. Al & Toni Boman - Toni continues to improve with the help of the new therapist, says she actually looks forward to his in-home visits. Toni, we are all happy to hear you finally have a good therapist. Hang in there and work hard with him and you will be dancing before long. Al says he is still holding his own. 2. Victor & Evette Fonomomoana - Our Members residing in Hawaii. Evette reports they are both doing well. The hurricane was downgraded from a cat. 4 to a tropical storm just before it hit Oahu where they live. Thank you for the report and please stay in touch. 3. Terry & Carol Garrett - Thanks to GINNY BILLINGSLY for this report. I actually received it last month just after the August Newsletter went to print. After not being able to contact the Garrett's by phone, Ginny, her daughter and son-in-law drove to Gainesville to check on them. They are both basically OK. Terry has had a couple of physical problems that are somewhat related to the severe wounds he received in Viet Nam but he has worked through them. His limited vision has deteriorated more so he is not able to see who is calling or dial out. Hang in there Terry, I know what you have been through and know you will continue to charge hard and figure out how to communicate with us. Carol is still doing an outstanding job caring for Terry. Carol, we know that it has been a long, hard task for you and we recognize and appreciate your dedication to caring for Terry. They have a new phone number: Give them a call. GINNY, I thank you so very much for sending me this information. It helps me a lot. It was a wonderful thing you did, driving across the state to check on old friends and then sending me the info. so I could put it out. Again, my most sincere THANKS. 4. John Morgan - John reports from Georgia that he is doing very well. He said that any Chapter members who visit the Atlanta area to give him a call. He might be be able to meet for lunch. Phone: Dave and Sue Soucie - Sue reports the Dave had several anomalies show up on his right femur (his good leg). X-ray's were taken and then a bone biopsy (drilling a hole in the bone) was done. The results indicated lymphoma on the femur, but not enough sample to determine if it is B cell (like he had before) or a slower growing lymphoma, so they have had to wait 6 weeks to do another PET scan (on 24 September) to see how much it has grown. Once this is determined, the doctors will be able to to come up with the proper treatment. Dave is showing slow improvement. Good days and bad days. On the good days he is laughing and joking as well as doing what exercises he can do with the good leg. Sue said Dave received the Get Well card we sent from the meeting. It sparked him up and he really appreciated it. He sends a big Thank You for the card. Dave's brother Mike is down from Canada and splits up the day sitting with Dave. This way Sue gets some rest. Sue also reports that Barbara is now in Atlanta at Emory University. Barbara received the Chapter Educational grant (and immediately spent it all on books. She sends her most heartfelt Thanks to the Chapter and members for their kind support. 6. Paul and Monica Darcy - Pablo sent a nice note along with their donation. He said they are both doing well. He also stated that they both remember how warm the Chapter members were and how quick they to assist them when they had the fire. They again, Thank the Chapter and extend best wishes to all. 7. Gerry Yates - Gerry surprised me with a phone call from St. Petersburg. Approx. 25 years ago Gerry and his family moved to Hayesville, NC. Gerry told me that they are relocating to the St. Pete. area. Not sure if this move is completed yet or coming soon. I will have more details next month. Welcome back Gerry and Hideko. 8. Nick and Myriam Hubbell - Nick reports they both doing well. Myriam retires in November and they will take a long vacation to Bogota Columbia to visit family there. They will return after the first of the year and hope to be able to attend are meetings on a more regular basis.

4 Chapter Announces 2018 Education Grant Program Awardees During the December 2017 meeting, the membership approved a program to provide limited financial aid to direct descendants of current active and honorary members of Chapter XXI, who are attending accredited educational institutions. The Board of Directors formed the Education Grant Committee which finalized the Grant process. The Committee is comprised of Dr. Janie Hill, Lyndsay Hastings and Philip Devon. The Committee and the Chapter XXI Board of Directors is very proud to announce the recipients of the 2018 Chapter XXI Education Grant. The recipients, in alphabetical order are: Abby Rose Broomfield Brett Paterra Hunter Peltier Barbara Soucie Jarrett Summerhill The Chapter was very fortunate that we have received additional contributions specifically assigned to the Education Fund that allowed the additional award recipients this year. **************************************************************************** DONATIONS TO CHAPTER PAUL & MONICA DARCY IMO PAUL A. 6 Christmas Meeting December 7-9, 2018 The Comfort Inn and Suites 3520 US Highway 98 North, Lakeland, FL [Exit 32] off I-4. Phone: The Hotel is approx 1/4 North off I-4. Mention Special Forces to get the special rate of: $83 (King bed) or $86 (2 Double beds) per night. Reservations must be made by November 15. Hospitality Room is on the 2nd floor near the elevator and will open about 1400 hrs Friday and will stay open until nap time or we run out of lies. The Party will be at Heritage Park, 8950 N. Campbell Road, Lakeland Fl. Maps will be in the hosp Room. Road Signs will be in place. The Menu: BBQ Chicken, Pulled Pork, Beans, Potato Salad, Cole Slaw, Bread, Ice Tea. Plus Deserts, and Condiments. The cost is $25.00 per person We will have enough BBQ so you can get some of each...
