Bill McKibben, the planet s best green journalist according to Time magazine and author of a dozen books about the environment, will speak on fossil fuel combustion and its link to devastating climate change at 7:00 p.m. that day in Oak Ridge High School Performing Arts Center. Weekly centering prayer begins in July Speech is silver. Silence is golden Speech is of Time. Silence is of Eternity. English poet Thomas Carlyle, in a translation from German in Sartor Resartus, 1831, in which a character expounds at length on the virtues of silence. Silence is made in Heaven. Wyclif's Bible, 1382 First Presbyterian Church is hosting a weekly time of The talk, sponsored by our church, will be a special Jackson B. Davidson Memorial Lecture on Science and Religion. Jack Davidson was an elder and beloved member of the church. The lecture, which is open to the public, will cap off a full day of activities around creation care. Earlier that morning, at 11:00 a.m., our congregation and congregations of three other places of worship in Oak Ridge First Christian, High Places Community and Unitarian Universalist churches will gather for an ecumenical service in the historic Grove Theater. And FPC will host a community-wide 100-mile potluck meal starting at 1:00 p.m. that day on its soccer field. centering prayer, beginning in July. Every Tuesday, from 12:15 to 12:45 p.m., all are invited to gather in the sanctuary for a time of prayer, most of which will be done in silence. Centering prayer is a popular method of contemplative prayer or Christian meditation that traces its roots to the 4 th century. Our days are so very full of noise, so this is an invita- At least one ingredient in each dish must have been grown within 100 miles of Oak Ridge, said Pastor Sharon Youngs. This event will emphasize the importance of eating healthy, locally produced food, while reducing the need to burn fossil fuel for transportation of foods produced hundreds to thousands of miles away. McKibben is a founder of the grassroots climate campaign 350.org, which has (continued on pg. 3) tion to all to step aside at midday to meditate and listen for God s voice in silence, said Pastor Sharon. Of course, we cannot guarantee you won t occasionally hear a thunderstorm or the sirens of ambulances and fire trucks whizzing by. But for the most part silence will reign during this special time.

Note from the Pastor I ll Fly Away? As I write this, sounds from the Montreat Worship and Music Conference linger in my soul hundreds of voices in song, an organ at full throttle, compelling sermons, conversations around the dinner table, the water cascading down the Lake Susan dam, and much more. I know the folks in the FPC group join me in thanking you for your support. The ideas and inspiration from the conference will inform and enliven our worship life as a congregation well into the future. For me, the most provocative aspect of the conference was the daily Bible study led by Stan Saunders, professor of New Testament at Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Ga. Crafting the study around the conference theme, A New Heaven and a New Earth, Stan shared some of his most recent ponderings about the end of the world. His questions include: What relation does humankind play in the created order? Does God intend to redeem just humans or the entire creation at the end? Does human salvation entail escaping from this earth? Does God intend to destroy the earth? Stan said that a popular misconception is that the world will be burned up and we will be transported to heaven. However, his work in the New Testament turns up nothing that says we are leaving this earth or that the earth will be destroyed; FPC is connecting with college students FPC has become a magnet for college students home during breaks, as well as students at local community colleges and the University of Tennessee. They are attracted by several college outreach events hosted by the church. Three types of events are being offered, all of which are organized and led by the young adults. The twice-a-month Friday night coffeehouse features musical entertainment provided by the students. Through admission fees and sales of refreshments, 15 coffeehouse events over the last year have attracted 1800 people and raised over $7,000 for the Free Medical Clinic of Oak Ridge. The clinic provides medical care to low-income families with no health insurance. The June 20 coffeehouse was another success story with both a full house and a talented lineup of entertainers, said Sue Byrne, one of the coffeehouse organizers. The students cleared $594 for the clinic. A newer offering is a young adult swing dancing class, a natural extension of the coffeehouse. Within days of being announced, rather, God is coming to dwell with us. That focuses the spotlight on and ramps up the urgency about caring for the earth and all of God s creation. It is a great segue to remind you to mark your calendars for Bill McKibben s visit as our speaker for a special Davidson Lecture on Sunday, August 18. Bill is doing much to raise awareness of the climate chaos that is happening to the earth right now. You can read more about the events planned for that day on page 1. The Psalmist writes, The earth is the Lord s, and everything in it. What will you do this day to treat it with utmost care? With a grateful heart, Sharon the class generated a following of 110 young adults. There is pent-up demand in Oak Ridge for places and activities for young adults, said swing dance class organizer, Michael Burns, a 2011 graduate of Oak Ridge High School, who will head back to the University of Notre Dame in the fall. Once you leave high school, the social structure evaporates. People are hungry to be part of a welcoming and fun community and to have things to do. (continued on pg. 5)

3 July 2013 Member Spotlight Daniele Jaques & Parker Jarnigan Daniele Jaques met her future husband Parker Jarnigan in Eugene, Ore., where they both held retail jobs at Big 5 Sporting Goods. I was an assistant manager and Parker was a part-timer, Daniele said. We met there and bonded over discount socks and shoes. Daniele enjoys fishing, reading, knitting, and hiking. She has two daughters, Lily, 10, and Violet, 7. Lily loves to read and just finished her first season playing baseball. Violet does taekwando and judo; she likes recess the best. Why are both girls named after flowers? Daniele always liked the name Lily for a daughter. When I got pregnant again, I liked the idea of naming a second daughter after a flower but I couldn't decide which one. So Lily, then a little over two, suggested Violet, and we went with that. Parker just finished his first year of teaching social studies at Oak Ridge High School. A graduate of ORHS, he has master s degrees in history and education from the University of Oregon. What is most satisfying about teaching? Learning about my students and how best to connect with them. The least glamorous part? Seeing firsthand how a society s struggle to fund edu- cation can leave good teachers without jobs and deserving students without everything they need to succeed. Why did they join FPCOR? They like being church members as part of our shared family experience. In Oregon they were members of a United Church of Christ congregation, so they tried out a UCC congregation in Knoxville. It was nice but not for us, so we googled open and affirming churches in Oak Ridge. First Presbyterian came up. We visited and felt at home, so that made it an easy decision. Page 3 Parker Jarnigan & Daniele Jaques (continued from pg. 1) coordinated 15,000 rallies in 190 countries since 2009 and sponsored a 21-city Do The Math tour last fall. The Do The Math movie has been shown in numerous cities this past spring and several times at First Presbyterian, including by the new Secret City Sustainability group of college students recruited by Ben Terpstra, a rising sophomore at Vanderbilt University. The movie is available online at The 350 in the website name refers to the 350 parts per million of atmospheric carbon dioxide that is deemed a safe level because it would not likely lead to catastrophic climate change. Just this year levels as high as 400 ppm were measured. McKibben s latest book is Eaarth (the extra a stands for altered ). His first book, The End of Nature, is regarded as the first book for a general audience on climate change. His other books include The Comforting Whirlwind: God, Job, and the Scale of Creation, Deep Economy: the Wealth of Communities and the Durable Future, and Fight Global Warming Now. McKibben was a staff writer for The New Yorker magazine and is a frequent contributor to The New York Times, The Atlantic, Mother Jones and Rolling Stone magazines. Eaarth was selected as the 2013 Life of the Mind book to be read by all incoming freshmen at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. McKibben will speak to the freshmen at UT on Monday, Aug. 19. Dan Terpstra, a church elder and father of Ben, asked McKibben several times over the years to deliver the annual Davidson lecture. A computer scientist at UT, Dan suggested that Eaarth be selected as a Life of the Mind book. When it was selected for 2013, Dan knew that McKibben would be coming to Knoxville to talk to the freshmen about his book. So Dan asked him if he would give a Davidson lecture in Oak Ridge the night before. McKibben agreed. Bill McKibben, author, speaker, and founder of 350.org. Additional information on the lecture and other events on Aug. 18 will be provided through our website and Facebook page.

There is still time to sign up to be a Certified Application Counselor (CAC) to help local residents register online for healthcare plans, beginning in October. Training begins in August. Contact Teresa Brittain at teresa@fmcor.org or call the church office ( ). Prayer In the first chapter of Mark s Gospel, the disciples saw that Jesus could solve problems better than anyone. We find the disciples learning early to take problems to Jesus. They were setting an example that we should follow. By bringing our problems to Jesus and asking, Lord, what should I do about this? we develop a relationship that encourages a continuous flow of conversation throughout the day. Jesus becomes a friend with whom we can discuss everything that happens in our life. He shares our joy, our pain, our hopes, and our fears. As the old hymn says, Take it to the Lord in prayer. Like the disciples, we can learn what should become the habit of a lifetime, to take all our troubles to Jesus and ask for his help. inspired by the writings of William Barkley Something else from the Gospel of Mark Another lesson from chapter 1 of the Gospel of Mark comes from the first three verses. The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. It is written in Isaiah the prophet: I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way, a voice of one calling in the desert, Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight paths for him. What does this mean for us? It means that hundreds of years before God sent Jesus to the earth, God revealed God s plan. John the Baptist prepared the way for Jesus. We are to prepare the way for Jesus. We are to make straight paths for him. How? By exhibiting joy, walking in peace, and being kind, loving, generous, and patient. inspired by The Life Application Study Bible Session news The session approved the transfer of Vershall Roy to Saint Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Austin, Texas. The session expressed thanks to Eagle Scout Robert McCleary for renovating our outside fireplace and surrounding area. Other session items are included in the committee reports in this issue of The Banner. Congregational milestones Sawyer Russell Hardin Johnson Johnsons new baby boy Ashley and Ryan Johnson are new parents to their third child born on June 13. Sawyer Russell Hardin Johnson weighed eight pounds and 14 ounces and was 21.5 inches long at birth. Ashley reported that he is "very healthy!" Lois Philippone, longtime church and choir member of First Presbyterian, passed away Wednesday, June 5. The family sent their thanks: Members of First Presbyterian Church, I want to thank you for the outpouring of sympathy and concern that you gave to our family before and after the death of Lois. People leaving the memorial service remarked on the beauty of the service and the quality of the music sung by the church choir and a few members of the Oak Ridge Chorus. We sincerely thank you all. Dick Philippone and the Philippone Family Russell Fulcher received his Eagle Scout award, the highest rank in the Boy Scouts of America program. The ceremony took place Sunday, June 9, in the FPC sanctuary. Russell Fulcher, center, being sworn in as a new Eagle Scout.

5 July 2013 Page 5 Fire pit and benches built for FPC as Eagle Scout project The renovation of the fire pit in the southeast corner of our church s seven-acre lot has been completed, thanks largely to the work of an Eagle Scout. Robert McCleary led the construction of the new fire pit and benches for his Eagle Scout project. On June 13 the Eagle Scout board of review determined that he had successfully met all requirements for the highest rank attainable in the Boy Scouts of America scouting program. Nine people helped Robert, investing a total of 37 hours. For several years members of the congregation had expressed a desire for an improved fire pit area. To become an Eagle Scout, one requirement is the completion of an extensive service project that benefits a nonprofit organization. The scout must plan, organize, lead, and manage the project. The work includes winning approval from his troop, recruiting volunteers, finding funding, and documenting the project. We are grateful to Robert for his work, which will be enjoyed for years to come! College ministry (continued from pg. 2) Mike learned to dance at Notre Dame as part of the swing club. Last summer when he returned to Oak Ridge for the semester break, he shared what he had learned with several other friends who proved to be equally enthusiastic. When he decided to offer a class this summer, he never dreamed of such a large turnout. He was also surprised that the male-tofemale ratio would remain so balanced. We change partners constantly so that everyone meets new people and nobody is left out, said Ryan Dadmun, UT student and co-instructor. We have new folks showing up at every lesson, so it never feels weird. It is all about building community and making this fun. Swing dancers of all skill levels are welcome from absolute never danced a day in my life beginners to dancers who have participated in college competitions. The free classes are offered on Tuesdays and Saturdays (through July 13) from 8 to 10:30 p.m. in Room 102. The newest offering for young adults is the Secret City Sustainability student group, which was organized by a dozen college students last month. The effort is anchored by FPC member Ben Terpstra. One focus of the group is to promote the special Davidson Lecture by Bill McKibben on Aug. 18 (see page 1). College students might be wearing out our parking lot, quipped Pastor Sharon. And that s fantastic news because it means young adults are making themselves at home here. What is unfolding here is unbelievable, said Mike. It feels good, really good. Claire Berger and Catherine Payzant sing a duet at a recent Coffeehouse event at First Presbyterian Church. Lindsey Chinn performs an original piece in front of the new Coffeehouse banner. Michael Burns dips Aislin Anderson in a swing dance class at FPC.

6 Page 6 Staying hydrated is a key to staying healthy Meg Tonne, Parish Nurse Dear church family, We can t thank you enough for your many cards, phone calls, and visits during this time of illness in our family. Our son had a heart attack in May and is doing better now. Church has been such an important part of our life since childhood. Since we ve been unable to attend, part of our life feels empty. It is such a blessing to be a member of FPC. This is such a loving and supportive church. Please pray that we may be able to attend church in the near future. Boyd & Carol Coker When the temperatures rise, getting enough to drink is important whether you re playing sports, traveling, or just sitting in the sun. And it s critical for your heart health. Keeping the body hydrated helps the heart more easily pump blood through the blood vessels to the muscles. And, it helps the muscles remove waste so that they can work efficiently. If you re well hydrated, your heart doesn t have to work as hard, said John Batson, M.D., a sports medicine physician with Lowcountry Spine & Sport in Hilton Head Island, S.C., and an American Heart Association volunteer. Dehydration can lead to problems ranging from swollen feet or a headache to lifethreatening illnesses such as heat stroke. What does being wellhydrated mean? The amount of water a person needs depends on climatic conditions, clothing worn, and exercise intensity and duration, Batson said. A person who perspires heavily will need to drink more than others. If you have diabetes or heart disease, you should drink more water to avoid overtaxing the heart or other organs. Because people with cystic fibrosis have high concentrations of sodium in their sweat, they should avoid dehydration. Some medications can act as diuretics, causing the body to lose more fluid. Thirst isn t the best indicator that you need water. If you get thirsty, you re already dehydrated, Batson said, adding that the color of your urine will indicate your condition. Pale and clear means you re well hydrated. If it s dark, drink more fluids. To determine how much fluid you need, weigh yourself before and after exercise, to see how much you ve lost through perspiration. For every pound of sweat you lose, you ll need to drink a pint of water. People who are in good shape tend to sweat more, and need to drink more even if they aren t feeling fatigued, Batson said. If you don t sweat during vigorous physical activity, you may be dehydrated to the point of developing heat exhaustion. For most people, water is the best fluid to drink to stay hydrated. Sources of water also include foods, especially fruits and vegetables. Sports drinks with electrolytes may be useful for people exercising vigorously in very hot weather, though they tend to be high in calories. It s healthier to drink water while you re exercising, and then eat a healthy snack like orange slices, bananas, or a small handful of unsalted nuts, Batson said. He cautioned against fruit juices or sugary drinks, such as soda. They can be hard on your stomach if you re dehydrated, he said. It s also best to avoid drinks containing caffeine, which acts as a diuretic and causes you to lose more fluids. Drinking water before you exercise or go out into the sun is an important first step, Batson said. Otherwise, you re playing catch-up and your heart is straining. Hydration isn t important only during physical activity. Sitting in the sun on a hot or humid day, even if you aren t exercising, can also cause your body to need more fluids. People who have a heart condition, are older than 50, or are overweight may also have to take extra precautions. You should also keep tabs on your hydration level if you re traveling, Batson said, adding, You might sweat differently if you re in a different climate. 7 July 2013 Page 7 Camp Creation July 11-12: vacation Bible school as a day camp This summer vacation Bible school for children two years old through rising fifth-grade students will have a new twist. Called Camp Creation, it s based on a day camp model and will run for two days, July 11 and 12, rather than a few hours each day for five days. The camp will run from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. both days. The program is designed to take into account the needs of working parents by providing extended drop-off and pick-up times. Parents can drop off their children as early as 8:45 a.m. and pick them up as late as 5:15 p.m. The activities will include music led by Pastor Sharon, games, outside water activities, crafts, Bible stories and lessons, and a time for the children to help cook their own lunches. The lunch on the first day will consist of homemade pizzas with vegetables from the Sunday school garden. On the last day the children will help cook hot dogs and s mores around a campfire. We are calling our time together Camp Creation because the focus is the creation story, said Hannah Norris, director of youth and children s education at the church. We will learn and talk about how we can care for God s creations plants, animals, and people. Every child is welcome. If parents are able, the church suggests that they make a $5 donation to help defray costs. Parents can sign up their children by calling the church office at Children s Moment July 7: Hannah Norris July 14: Chuck Hadden July 21: Peggy Terpstra July 28: Hannah Norris Youth activities Fabulous Fridays Please meet at the church at 11 a.m. each Friday for a fun water activity that will be announced the previous week. 8 Page 8 Community garden: A lot less trowel and error Life in the community garden is abundant. Ten FPC families and the Sunday school are tending plots this season, and the vegetables there are flourishing. We see that the gardeners of 2013 have learned a great deal about growing vegetables and selecting varieties that thrive in Oak Ridge s clay soils despite high heat and humidity, said Rosalyn McKeown Ice. For example, Doug and Valerie Allen had huge success with early crops of lettuce and kale. Gene and Rosalyn McKeown Ice, who are both in charge of the garden, are overrun with arugula. Some gardeners are hoping for tomatoes for the 4 th of July weekend. We will have lots of tomatoes so we ll be happy to give many away, said Peggy Terpstra, who is tending a plot with her husband Dan. Karen Pence mulched her garden last fall, giving it a head start this spring. The zucchini and tomatoes are poised to ripen. Others, especially Adrienne Pyle and her three daughters, are planting a fall garden in the hope that the first frost will not arrive until late October or early November. We thank all the church members who helped with the garden this spring, said Gene Ice. Some tilled garden plots for new gardeners and others laid down cardboard and pine straw on the paths for weed control. It was really heartening to see that some who helped on the workday in May were church members who had not signed up for garden plots. Although gardening is an enjoyable pastime, the plots are contributing more than fresh and nutritious produce for FPC families. The gardens are reducing the need to consume food that is transported in vehicles that burn fossil fuels. In this way the FPC community garden is cutting back on carbon dioxide emissions that could lead to devastating climate change. We will display all the options in the fellowship hall so that church members can consider the different approaches to improving church office access. Planning committee focuses on office access & landscaping Improving access to the church office and implementing a landscaping plan have been the focus of the Planning Committee this past spring. Tabitha Darko, FPC member and architecture student at the University of Tennessee, presented plans to the committee in May for making the church office more accessible. She suggests two options: Build an addition to the sanctuary, or remodel rooms 100 and 101 in the Activities Building and relocate the church offices there. For a third option, the committee has received bids to install an elevator to the current office space on the second floor of the Activities Building. The committee recommended that the session give Tabitha a $300 scholarship in appreciation for her tremendous work, said Sue Byrne, committee chair. We will display all the options in the fellowship hall so that church members can consider the different approaches to improving church office access. The display will include the conceptual designs and layouts of each option. The committee is obtaining contractor bids during June and July to help members understand the costs associated with each option. Fred Haywood has agreed to lead the effort to determine the price of a partial implementation of the landscaping plan developed by Willow Ridge Garden Center & Landscaping. The design, which is displayed in Room 6 off the sanctuary for all to see, calls for plants such as two Fat Albert Blue Spruce trees, 12 Kleims Hardy Gardenia, and six Double Knockout roses. The first step will be to install plants on the Turnpike side of the sanctuary building. We will buy the plants and ask for volunteers to dig them in and heavily mulch the bed, Sue said. The budget for installing this section of the landscaping plan includes $1500 from Planning Committee funds and $1000 from the landscaping budget of the Properties and Maintenance Committee.
