1 First Presbyterian Church April 15, :00 a.m Embodying Christ s inclusive love through heart, mind, and service
2 *Please stand, in body or in spirit. Text printed in bold italics to be read in unison. Prelude There is a Redeemer/Wondrous Cross Callaway Chiming of the Hour Welcome Introit Praise the one true love incarnate; Christ who suffered in our place. Jesus died and rose for many that we may know God by grace. Let us sing for joy and gladness, seeing what our God has done. Praise the one redeeming glory; praise the One who makes us one. *Call to Worship Christ is risen! Alleluia! Christ is risen, indeed! Alleluia! We gather in the name of the living Christ to worship God. God is in this place and calls us to worship in spirit and in truth. Let us recall again the wonder of the Resurrection. Let us be replenished and renewed by the Bread of Life. *Hymn 247 *Invitation to Confession Now the Green Blade Rises *Prayer of Confession (silent confession) God of everlasting life, we continue to rejoice that Christ is risen! And yet, like the disciples, we confess that we struggle with faith in the midst of our joy. We hesitate to reach out to others in your name, afraid they will ask too much of us. We are only half present to those around us, preoccupied with our own thoughts and agendas. Lord, forgive us, we pray. Renew the vigor of our faith, so that we might truly be witnesses to your grace and truth; through the risen Christ we pray. Amen. *Assurance of Forgiveness FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Oak Ridge, Tennessee A Congregation of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) April 15, 2018 Third Sunday of Easter *The Peace of Christ Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us forgive one another. The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. And also with you. Let us share the peace of Christ with one another. 2
3 *Sung Response (hymn 59) The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; God s mercies never come to an end. They are new every morning, new every morning; Great is your faithfulness, O Lord, great is your faithfulness. Time with the Children Peggy Terpstra Children are invited to remain for the rest of the service or go to First Steps. Anthem Stay With Us Hovland Scripture Reading Stay with us, Lord Jesus, it soon is evening, and night is falling. Jesus Christ, the world s true light! Shine so the darkness cannot overcome it! Stay with us, Lord Jesus, it soon is evening. Stay with us, Lord Jesus, for night is falling. Let your light pierce the darkness and fill your church with its glory. Stay with us, Lord Jesus, it soon is evening, and night is falling. Luke 24:36b-48 Sermon What s for Supper? Sharon Youngs *Affirmation of Faith (adapted by members of FPC) We believe in God, the Father Almighty, and in Jesus Christ, His Son, our Lord, and in the Holy Spirit. We seek to know God's will, to walk in God's ways, and to proclaim the Gospel to all people, by our lives as well as by our words. We work and pray for the progress of knowledge, the promotion of justice, the reign of peace, and the realization of human unity in our time. And we look with faith for the triumph of righteousness in our community and in our world. Amen. The Sacrament of Holy Communion Hymn 500 Be Known to Us in Breaking Bread Invitation to the Lord s Table Great Prayer of Thanksgiving The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord. It is right to give our thanks and praise. In every time and every age, O God, it is good and faithful that we give you thanks we praise your name and join their unending hymn: 3
4 Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory, hosanna in the highest. Blessed is the One who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed are you, God of power and love, and blessed is Jesus Christ, your Son, our risen Lord... we proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Blessed are you, O Spirit, giver of life God of all that is, now and forever. Amen. Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen. Breaking of the Bread, Pouring of the Cup Sharing of the Elements [Communion is served by intinction. You are invited to come forward, take a piece of bread (all gluten-free), dip it into the chalice, and then eat it.] Prayer after Communion Gracious Lord, you have filled us to overflowing at your table. Now send us forth with courage to witness to your love in word and deed. Amen. Moment for Mission The Gathering of Our Gifts Offertory Pastorale Harris *Doxology (hymn 609) and Prayer of Dedication Praise God, from whom all blessings flow. WORSHIP NOTES It s the Third Sunday of Easter on the liturgical calendar. The season of Easter spans the period between Easter Sunday and Pentecost, which is May 20 this year. Hymn 247, Now the Green Blade Rises, was written in The mage of the dying seed and rising plant is a parallel with the death and resurrection of Christ, and a model for the Christian life: our perpetual need to die to self in order to live for God. The final verse is an affirmation that we can be brought back to life when our hearts have become cold, grieving, or in pain. The melody is a 15th century French carol, Noel nouvelet, "Sing we now of Christmas, Noel sing we here!" BELIZE MEETING TODAY Join Andy Stout, program director for World Gospel Outreach (WGO) Missions, Belize, in room 102 of the Activities building today at 11:15 a.m. Andy will be sharing his thoughts about Accompany and Accomplish: Twin Goals of International Team Mission.
