First Presbyterian Church April 29, :00 a.m Embodying Christ s inclusive love through heart, mind, and service
*Please stand, in body or in spirit. Text printed in bold italics to be read in unison. Prelude This is My Father s World Sheppard/arr. Alex-Zsolt Chiming of the Hour Welcome Introit FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Oak Ridge, Tennessee A Congregation of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) April 29, 2018 Fifth Sunday of Easter God welcomes all, strangers and friends; God s love is strong and it never ends. (hymn 399) FPC Children *Call to Worship The Lord is risen! Alleluia! Alleluia! The Lord is risen indeed! Beloved, let us love one another. We love because God first loved us. Let us worship God. Bert Everitt *Hymn 246 Christ is Alive! *Invitation to Confession *Prayer of Confession (silent confession) Almighty God, in Jesus Christ you have shown us your way and revealed to us your truth. Yet, we have strayed from where you would have us go and what you would have us do. We have doubted your promise to be present with us, and we have misgivings about your goodness in the midst of difficult days. Forgive us, O God. Help us to keep our eyes on you, so that we might show your grace and justice in both word and deed; in the name of the risen Christ we pray. Amen. *Assurance of Forgiveness *The Peace of Christ Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us forgive one another. The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. And also with you. Let us share the peace of Christ with one another. 2
*Sung Response (hymn 59) The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; God s mercies never come to an end. They are new every morning, new every morning; Great is your faithfulness, O Lord, great is your faithfulness. Time with the Adults Adults are invited to remain for the rest of the service. Chris Black First Reading Psalm 22:25-31 Amelia Everitt Anthem When Children Pray Wilson When children pray, please do not say, How nice! Remember Jesus cares, and listens to our prayers. When children speak, please do not say, How sweet! and pat us on the head. Remember what we ve said. And when we sing, please do not say, How cute! It is so nice to hear the children do their thing. Look in our eyes. We may be angels in disguise. Our singing voice may be God s choice. We don t want you to miss the Holy Spirit s kiss. The things that children say and do may be God s way, may be God s way of calling you. ~Brian Wren Second Reading 1 John 4:7-21 Sermon Andrew Brittain *Affirmation of Faith (adapted by members of FPC) We believe in God, the Father Almighty, and in Jesus Christ, His Son, our Lord, and in the Holy Spirit. We seek to know God's will, to walk in God's ways, and to proclaim the Gospel to all people, by our lives as well as by our words. We work and pray for the progress of knowledge, the promotion of justice, the reign of peace, and the realization of human unity in our time. And we look with faith for the triumph of righteousness in our community and in our world. Amen. Call to Prayer (hymn 240, refrain; first time choir, second time all) Alleluia, Alleluia! Give thanks to the risen Lord. Alleluia, Alleluia! Give praise to his name. Sharon Youngs 3
Prayers of the People - with The Lord s Prayer (ecumenical) { Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen. The Gathering of Our Gifts Andre Darko Offertory Aria Simper/arr. Ryan *Doxology (hymn 609) and Prayer of Dedication Praise God, from whom all blessings flow. Praise God, all creatures high and low. Alleluia, alleluia! Praise God, in Jesus fully known: Creator, Word, and Spirit one. Alleluia, alleluia! Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! Recognition of Andrew Brittain *Hymn 611 Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee *Charge and Blessing *Sung Response Irish Blessing (see inside back cover of hymnal) Postlude Jubilate Deo Wetherill Today s flowers are given by Melissa Haynes to the glory of God and in memory of June, Charles, and Joel Haynes. 4
Welcome to First Presbyterian Church (FPC)! No matter who you are or where you are on life s journey, you are welcome here. We hope you feel the love that is present and our joy in having you with us. Please join us for refreshments in the fellowship hall following worship. Nursery care is available in the Education building. Ask any of the ushers to direct you, if needed. Hearing assistance units and large print bulletins are available from the ushers. Audio recordings of sermons and more information on FPC are at fpcor.org. Please call the church office ( ) for audio recordings of the entire service. WORSHIP NOTES Today is Youth Sunday at First Presbyterian Church! Many of our young people will be leading different parts of our worship together this morning. I hope we can all pay attention to how God makes God's self known as our children and youth lead and guide our worship together. There will be different voices, music, and a unique flow to the service; it should be a meaningful experience for all of us! FIFTH SUNDAY AT FPC Today is a Fifth Sunday at FPC, which means special opportunities for fellowship of all ages after worship: The youth will be planting a salsa garden in the community garden. You are invited to cheer them on and tour the amazing garden while you re at it. We ll also have a book signing in the fellowship hall, featuring authors Tarri Driver, Jeri Duke, Tony Jordan, Herb Krause, John Stuhl, Richard Ward, and others. Tarri, Tony, and John will have books for sale. Those who haven t yet published their books will be available to talk about their manuscripts or memoirs. SERIES ON EVANGELICALISM This afternoon at 1:00 p.m. in the fellowship hall, Phillip Sherman, associate professor of religion at Maryville College, concludes our series on American Evangelicalism: Past, Present, and Future.
