1 THE TEXIAN The Official Publication of The Sons of the Republic of Texas VOL VIII NUMBER 2 MAY 2015 THE SONS OF THE REPUBLIC OF TEXAS PRESENT ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS For the 75 th year, the Sons of the Republic Texas presented scholarships to three winners of the 2015 Texas History Essay Contest on April 21, 2015, San Jacinto Day. The Essay Topic this year was The Battle of Coleto and The Goliad Massacre. Because of the generosity of individual members of the Sons of the Republic of Texas, The SRT was able to increase individual scholarships by $ 1,000 to assist graduating high school seniors with their college education. Each of the scholarship winners received a Commemorative Medallion, a Commemorative Plaque and a check presented by Sir Knight, Robert Kendall, President General, Sir Knight, Bob Steakley, First Vice President General, and Sir Knight, Denton Bryant, Chairman of the Annual Texas History Essay Contest. In addition, each winner received a special Texas flag which had been flown over the Texas State Capital Building, on March 2, 2015, Texas Independence Day and a Commemorative Come and Take It Cannon Ball which had been fired at Gonzales, Texas. The First Place Winner of $ 4,000 was Michelle Huang, graduating senior at Dulles High School in Sugar Land, Texas. Robert Kendall, KSJ In the cold months of February and March I attended three ceremonies that exemplify the great Republic and State of Texas. The first was the memorial cross dedication for Ranger Capt. PRESIDENT GENERAL S MESSAGE James Townsend. The second was the Cenotaph dedication, at the State Cemetery in Austin, for Jose Antonio Navarro, a great Texas patriot. The ceremony had many Sons and Daughters of the Republic of Texas, state dignitaries, the wife of the Governor of Texas and many members of the Navarro family Texas History Essay...1, 3 President General s Message...1, 3 Janet s Korner...2 Annual Meeting Pictures...4, 6, 7, 8 Astros Baseball Game...5, 8 WHAT S INSIDE in attendance. She plans to attend Texas A & M University in Bryan College Station, Texas and major in Agricultural Systems Management. Standing left to right: Sir Knight, Denton Bryant, Chairman of the Annual Texas History Essay Contest Committee, Michelle Huang, First Place Winner, Cara Lynn Templeton, Second Place Winner, and Kaylee Ites, Third Place Winner. cont. from pg. 1 PRESIDENT GENERAL S MESSAGE all those brave volunteers gave their lives unselfishly for the future of this great state. Alamo chapter President Dick Weitzel and I placed a lovely wreath on the Alamo plaza. Shortly after placing the wreath, the S.R.T. gave a salute to the fallen Texian soldiers of the Alamo. After a fine breakfast at The Menger Hotel, we went back to the plaza in front of the Cenotaph. The Alamo chapter has a ceremony there every year. This year s speaker was William Chermerka. He talked about the size of the Alamo during the battle. It was a interesting speech. This year s annual meeting in Ft. Worth was the 93rd annual meeting. There s only 7 years to go before The Sons of the Republic of Texas turns 100. I would like to thank the Ephraim M. Daggett chapter for having a wonderful weekend at a great hotel. Both the morning and the afternoon meeting went smoothly. The new by-laws were unanimously approved. At the banquet everyone had a wonderful time. K.R. Wood started it off playing his music and singing his songs. After dinner K.R. was awarded with an honorary membership. This year the Distinguished Service Award was award to Randy Pollard. Randy is the Historian General for the S.R.T. He has also done so many things that has helped the S.R.T. We had two new Knights invested this night. They are Lynden Rasch and Bob Steakley. Once again both these men have done so many things for the S.R.T. I would be filling many a page of this Texian with their accomplishments. It is my honor to say thank you to these men. San Jacinto Day came quickly after the annual meeting, or so it seemed to me. On a nice cool sunny day we had Ron Stone Jr. as the Master of Ceremonies. He did a wonderful job. Larry Spasic, of the museum, gave the principal speech. He talked about the things leading up to the battle and the battle itself. He brought up some interesting points. I want to thank all The Sons of the Republic of Texas for the great work of keeping history of the Republic of Texas alive. God Bless America! God Bless Texas! Robert Kendall, KSJ President General 3
