Jordan Burnham came to our school a few weeks ago to share his compelling tale of perseverance and strength. During his middle and high school, Burnham struggled with truly being happy. During this time he struggled with depression. Overwhelmed by pressures at home and at school, one day in his senior in high school Burnham attempted to take his own life. He jumped out of his bedroom window, which amounted to 9 stories. He had many broken bones and was in a coma for five days, not to mention the emotional scars. Burnham survives but will never forget that day. To this day B u r n h a m s t i l l l i v e s w i t h depression. The only difference from a few years ago is that he s learned from his suicide attempt and has gained many coping skills to help him through his day. He has shared his story with us more than once but he has also shared his story with 27 different states and 3 different countries. Teens all over the world can relate to his story and that s why he feels he has to share it. He wants every one to know that everybody who goes through something IS stronger for it.

2 King of the Seas By: Nate One night along the coast of Sri Lanka, an island directly off of India, an ancient boat came ashore. Its name was Lagia Hunter. There had been word that a large dinosaur-like fish (the Lagia) had been seen about 240,000 kilometers off the dock.when searching through the boat, they found a man, weakened by the sea in obvious ways. He was taken to the infirmary by a group of young soldiers. When he was into reality once again, he told amazing stories of how he hunted the Lagia for years. One evening, in the middle of his story telling how the Lagia s electrified spines can attract terrible thunderstorms. Dark foreboding clouds rolled over the fishing village of Moga. The hunter stopped mid- sentence and called to the barracks, Mount your stations, load the boats, and get ready to meet the king of the seas!!! New Hope For the Birds By: Ethan and Wilson In a season that started off great with an easy win against the St. Louis Rams, the Philadelphia Eagles found themselves at 1-4 going into a seasonchanging matchup against division rival Washington last Sunday. Going into the game, the Eagles had lost close ones to the Atlanta Falcons, and the San Francisco 49 ers, and not so close ones to the New York Giants and the Buffalo Bills. However, they were a different team against the Redskins. Entering the matchup, the Eagles had turned the ball over ten more times than they had gotten a turnover from the other team, however last week, the birds picked off Redskins quarterback Rex Grossman four times and forced him to be benched in favor of backup John Beck. In the end, Philly s big win over a team who, as of then, led the NFC East, placed them at 2-4 going into their bye week, with three home games following the rest and the season still within reach. 4 Advice Written by Amanda Colonel Gaddafi By Nick Question: I m new in high school and I m a bit nervous. What should I do? Answer: Well, honestly, being nervous is normal. You re entering a new school with new people (friends, teachers, etc.), so being nervous is completely understandable. Sometimes starting new things and being at new places is a good thing because it s a change. Everyone in life goes through changes, both good and bad. This one happens to be a good change. You re starting fresh, just be yourself. There are plenty of students with all different types of personalities. No matter who you are, what you like, what your beliefs are, or anything dealing with you, don t change yourself just to fit in. Once you pretend to be someone that really isn t you, you have to mask your true identity. If you feel like you re lost, there will always be counselors and teachers that are willing to help you out. Remember, that it s part of their job. I hope that these tips help you as you continue to adjust to your new setting. I wish someone would have given me this advice, but I learned the hard way. If you need advice on anything, don t hesitate to leave me a question and I will do my best to answer it. After months of intelligence work, raids, and protests by the Libyan people, Col. Gaddafi was found and killed. In my opinion the over throwing of Libya s dictator and government is not just an example for the Middle East but it s an example for the rest of the world. They showed the world that no matter how big and powerful governments seem to be, the citizens of the nation decide the future. Some of the positive aspects of this event include Libya bringing their dictator to justice and the possibility of democracy to the Middle East. This will allow the Middle East and Libya to become stronger and more powerful. Although many lives were lost while attempting to capture Col. Gaddafi, many lives in turn were saved. The future of the Libyan people is now a brighter one and this political turning point will remain on the minds of the Libyan people for many years to come.
