1 DURING THE UNIVERSAL PRAYER (PRAYER OF THE FAITHFUL), WE PRAY FOR THE POPE AT EVERY MASS, AND WELL WE SHOULD! THE POPE IS OUR SHEPHERD THE VICAR OF CHRIST WHOSE AUTHORITY TO LEAD CAN BE TRACED BACK TO THE FIRST POPE, ST. PETER. THIS PLAY WILL RECOUNT THREE EVENTS FROM THE GOSPELS INVOLVING ST. PETER AND OUR LORD. CHARACTERS: Narrator: Adult Peter Jesus Disciples Embark on a multimedia journey through the Mass that is totally approachable and thoroughly entertaining! Narrator: Peter was one of Jesus best friends. He was with Jesus from the beginning of his ministry. Peter was a fisherman from a city named Galilee. (Peter pretends to be fishing with a rod). Q: What was Jesus friends name? Q: What did he do for a living? Q: Where was he from? The Bible mentions Peter many times, but there a three stories in particular that we are going to talk about today. The first one starts off after Jesus miraculously fed over 5,000 people with only two fish and five pieces of bread. After everybody ate, Jesus sent the people away, and told his friends the disciples to get in a boat and go to the other side of the lake. Jesus went up to a mountain and prayed to the Father. Jesus followers just finished passing out fish and bread to 5,000 people. They were all very tired (disciples all yawn). But even though they just wanted to curl up into a little ball and fall asleep, they did as Jesus commanded and climbed into their boat. (Jesus points to the boat. Peter and the other disciples get in, but Jesus walks away) It was turning dark and would soon rain. A storm was rolling in and they wanted to get to the other side of the lake fast. They quickly put up the sails and shoved off. (Peter and the disciples pretend to put up the sails) Q: How many people did Jesus feed? Q: With how many fish and how many pieces of bread? Q: Why were Jesus and his disciples tired? Q: How were they going to get across the lake? Q: What was the weather like? Q: Did Jesus go with them? 2 The 12 disciples got into the boat and started heading away from shore. It was night time as they arrived in the middle of the lake. A huge storm rolled in and it was thundering, lightning and raining. The wind was rocking the boat back and forth. (Peter and the 4 pretend to keep balance on a rocking boat) All of a sudden Peter, one of Jesus followers, thought he saw something. He thought his imagination was playing a trick on him so he rubbed his eyes and looked out in the distance. He saw it again. (Peter rubs his eyes and strains to see in the distance) He thought it was a ghost but it wasn t, it was Jesus and he was walking on the water! (Jesus walks next to the imaginary boat) Jesus saw the scared expressions on their faces (Disciples act scared). He told them not to be afraid. Q: What did the disciples see when they reached the middle of the lake? Q: How did they react? Q: What did Jesus tell them? Peter was a very brave and adventurous person. He saw the Lord walking on water and wanted to have fun, too. Peter asked Jesus if he could go out and walk with him, so, Jesus invited Peter to come out of the boat and walk on top of the water. (Jesus helps Peter climb over the boat s ledge and Peter walks on water) He did and it was awesome! Peter felt the cold water underneath his feet. He felt the waves hitting him but he just put one foot in front of the other and kept his eyes on Jesus. He couldn t believe he was walking on water! Q: What did Peter ask Jesus? Q: What did Jesus respond? Q: Did Peter obey? Peter walked for a while until he remembered the violent storm around him. Peter became aware again of the waves and the thunder and the rain. He looked down and did something he shouldn t have done. He took his eyes off Jesus. All of a sudden, he became very nervous. Peter started to sink and he screamed for the Lord to rescue him. (Peter pretends to sink) Immediately, Jesus grabbed his hand and they all entered the boat. At once, the storm stopped. (Jesus grabs Peters hand and all enter the boat) Q: Why did Peter begin to sink? Q: What did Jesus do? In this first story, Peter wants to follow Jesus no matter how impossible it seems. Jesus could perform many miracles like walking on water and feeding 5000 people with 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish because He is the son of God. But He never told anyone that He was, not even his followers. He wanted them to reach that conclusion on their own. This next story takes place in a town called Caesaria. Jesus and his disciples were walking into the town and He asked them who do people say I am? They all scratched their heads? (Disciples scratch their heads) One disciple answered some say you are John the Baptist and another said that he was Elias, Jeremiah or one of the prophets. Q: What town was Jesus and his followers walking into at the beginning of this story? Q: What did Jesus ask them? Q: What did they respond? But Jesus told them that s what the people say that I am. But what I am asking is who do YOU say that I am? Then Peter answered You are the Christ, the son of the living God. Q: What did Peter answer Jesus? Jesus never told anybody He was the son of God. He knew that only God the father could have revealed this to Peter. Because of Peter s faith, Jesus told him that he would be the rock on which the Church would be built. Jesus also told him that he would give him the keys to the kingdom of heaven. This is why when you see paintings of St. Peter, he usually has keys in his hand. (Jesus pretends to give Peter the keys) Q: What was Peter s reply to Jesus question? Q: What did Jesus give Peter? In previous story, Jesus tells Peter that he will be the foundation of the Church. In this last story, Jesus gives Peter a very important command. Before Jesus went to heaven to return to the Father, he wanted to leave the Church in good hands. Jesus is the good shepherd and He wanted us to have a visible shepherd who would lead the Church and feed us, the sheep. Jesus asked Peter if he loved him. Peter answered that he did. So Jesus says Feed my sheep. Because of this, many times we will see images of Peter not only with a key in his hand, but also with a shepherd s staff because he is leading the Church. Peter was the first pope. Q: Who was the first Pope? Q: Why is the Shepherd s staff a symbol of the Pope? Q: Does anybody know who is Pope today? 3 CRAFT PROJECT: PETER PAPER BAG PUPPET MATERIALS: 1. Coloring pages of eyes, nose, eyebrows, beard, hands, feet, key and pastoral staff. 2. Brown paper lunchbag (1 per child) 3. Scissors 4. Glue 5. Crayons and markers STEPS: Facilitator: You may want to complete this art activity ahead of time to have a sample to show the children. 1. Have children color the sheets with eyes, eyebrows, nose, beard, hands, feet, keys and staff. 2. Have them carefully cut out each object. 3. Paste the face and other body parts onto the bag. Use this illustration as a guide. Encourage them to create their own robe. They may color, paste buttons, string, ribbons, cut and paste construction paper, cloth, anything they may have. 4. An optional coloring page is available for those children who cannot complete the main art activity.
