Foasett was boni ' ovember 3, 1851, on a farm near Waterto?,n, N. Y.^and when he vms four years old accompanied the family to Oshkosh, j.sconsin^and in 1863 went with tnem to Minnesota* He wan reared as a farm toy a-comraon-^achool-exiucatioru In 1875 he went to ansas and engaced -in the cattle business on the >moky fiver, near "olomon City. lie had some experier.ee about this time as a marshal in Jexas, and upon returning to.-zansas became one of the first isershals» in Caldwell. ^I-or several years he dealt extensively Ih live stockjoft&n goin(* to Monterey, Kixioo^and drivi g aa neny a3 five hundred horses, sometimes to Emporia, Kansaa, where he shipped the animal3 to ichigan ard to other Eastern, points. Mr. Fossett had many narrow escapesv<it the outlaws', during these times*- His natural courage and presence of mind alone saved him on more than one occasion, and he has many thrilling accounts of hairbreadth escapes.
