1 First Generation William Nelson Shedd. Born on 12/12/1834 in Tompkins County, New York. William Nelson died in Arkansaw, Wisconsin on 4/11/1893, he was 58. Buried in Round Hill Cemetery. Military service: Bet , Private, 18th Infantry Regiment, Company H, Wisconsin Volunteers Occupation: Farmer Notes for William Nelson Shedd: The Eighteenth Wisconsin Infantry Regiment was organized at Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and mustered into the service of the United States on March 15th, It left the state March 30, and disembarked at Pittsburg Landing, TN, April 5, 1862, at once moving up to the front. The battle opened early next morning and the Eighteenth shared the varying fortunes of the brigade to which it had been assigned during the battle of Shiloh, April 6-7, After the battle the Eighteenth participated in the advance on and siege of Corinth, MS, April 29 to June 10, 1862, and the battle of Corinth, October 3-4, Thereafter it engaged in various expeditions preceding the assembling of the Union forces at Grand Junction in November preparatory to the advance on Vicksburg. After the change of plans, the Eighteenth marched to Memphis, from which it embarked down the Mississippi reaching Young's Point, LA on January 25, Later the men were employed on the canal which was dug to enable Grant's army to pass below Vicksburg. Crossing the Mississippi River below Vicksburg the regiment reported to General McPherson at Raymond, MS on May 13, and moving with the union forces took part in the battle of Jackson, MS, May 14, which was soon thereafter followed by the battle at Champion's Hill, May 16, and Black River Bridge, May 17, Soon thereafter it took its position in the trenches encompassing Vicksburg, where it remained until the surrender. (Siege of Vicksburg, May 19-July 4, 1863). After the surrender the Eighteenth remained in the vicinity of Vicksburg doing guard and fatigue duty until September. Thereupon it was transferred to Memphis, TN and thence to Corinth, MS. Here the Union forces were assembled to assist in the relief of Chattanooga. The Eighteenth as a part of the Fifteenth Army Corps, after a march of about two hundred fifty miles with these forces under General Sherman, reached Chattanooga, and on November 24th crossed the Tennessee river and participated in the attack on Missionary Ridge November 25. Thereafter the Eighteenth was assigned to the work of protecting the lines of communication. Assigned at times to Huntsville, Stevenson, AL, Chattanooga, TN and Allatoona, GA and south of Chattanooga on the road to Atlanta, with headquarters at Allatoona. In the attack on that place October 5, 1864, the Eighteenth was actively engaged in the famous defense. A portion of the regiment accompanied General Sherman on the Savannah and Carolina Campaigns. That portion remaining in Tennessee joined the detachment accompanying General Sherman at Goldsboro, NC, the latter part of March After the surrender of the Confederates under General Johnston April 26, 1865, the Eighteenth participated in the Grand Review at Washington, D.C. and was transferred to Louisville, KY as a part of the Provisional Division, where the regiment remained until mustered out July 18. It returned to Madison, WI and was disbanded July 29, On 3/14/1859 when William Nelson was 24, he married Sally Morse, daughter of Robert Morse (12/27/ ) & Margaret Fisher ( ). Born on 1/23/1843 in Wyoming County, New York. Sally died in Porcupine, Wisconsin on 7/6/1904, she was 61. Buried in Round Hill Cemetery, Arkansaw, Wisconsin.

2 Baptized RLDS 3/4/1894 at Frankfort Branch (Porcupine), Wisconsin This is taken word for word from the book Regathering the Scattered Saints in Wisconsin and Illinois, by Pearl Wilcox. On March 4, 1894, Rachel (Curtis) Metcalf was baptized. She had been among the first to open her house to the missionaries. She was born August 13, 1826, at Livingston, New York. She married William Metcalf September 28, 1840, and they became the parents of eight children who became active in the church. On the same day Rachel was baptized, Sally Shedd was baptized. She was the mother of the two young men who asked the elders to preach at Porcupine. During the year thirty-two were baptized. These baptisms took place in Porcupine Creek, a little stream about two feet deep except for a few deep holes which had been dug out for swimming. i. George Nelson. Born on 9/16/1861. Frankfort Branch at Porcupine: The Frankfort branch at Porcupine in Pepin County, Wisconsin, came about as the result of the visit of a young missionary, Herbert P. Curtis I the home of his Aunt Rachel E. Metcalf. Also living here was Uncle Percy Curtis, brother of Rachel. At the same time Elder Charles H. Burr was preaching in the vicinity. No doubt he came to Porcupine by the invitation of Joseph W. Heath, Jr., the only known church member in the locality at the time. He had been baptized into the old church organization on July 18, 1852, Clearfield County, Pennsylvania, by Elder Rowland Cobb. He was born at the location January 10, His wife Elizabeth was born in Stiendorf, Germany, August 23, After their marriage they came to Frankfort in Missionaries Curtis and Burr were interested in bringing these people the story of the Reorganized church. They gained permission to use the Maple Ridge schoolhouse. Among those attending were two young farmhands, Murry and Morse Shedd. They became so interested in the message these Mormon preachers brought that they asked them to come to the Porcupine schoolhouse and hold a series of services. In January of 1984, with the temperature below zero, the schoolhouse was filled each night, although some just came to look at the `Mormon' preachers since the services had been well advertised. When Hulda (Mrs. Frank Livingston) heard of the preaching services she could hardly wait to attend. She remembered how at the age of four, she had listened to her father read a newspaper account of the tragedy at Nauvoo when Joseph and Hyrum were killed Her parents were John L. and Hulda Bundy of Fox, Pennsylvania, where Hulda was born in The parents were members of the old church organization and died before learning of the Reorganization.
