The cementery is on a private farm. The cementery is in shambles and overgrown with trees and brush. The tombstone cannot be identified. Some of the tombstones are nothing more than river rocks placed as headstones. His burial was described as follows by a family member watching the ceremony: "Lou Emma was not gone very long when our Grandfather Franklin died. Then it was very common to die from the flu, or influenza, as it is properly called. With no miracle drugs, hundreds died from it each year. Uncle Carl and Uncle Herbert were in the service and brought home measles while on leave. This added to the flu epidemic, took the lives of Grandpa and the wives of both Carl and Herbert. This left no place for Grandma Franklin to live and she came to our house. When Grandpa died, he was brought to Beamont for burial. That was the first time a hearse was ever seen at Summer Shade and the first to go up on artin Hill - a family cemetery. The hearse was horse-drawn and it took two people in the front by each horse to hold thorn going upjsuch a long hill. There were also two men in the back to help hold on and put big rocks in behind the wheels to Keep it from rolling back. They would pull a short way, stop, put the rocks down to hold, and let the horses rest a bit before continuing. It was quite a sight. The hearse was black with grey-shades and decorated with lots of tassels. " While in Kentucky during a visit in April 2010, I found the road desribed in the paragraph as well as the cementery. The cemetery can be reached by taking artin's Cementery Road just outside Summer Shade. You have to travel a little ways down the road then go cross country through a field, then walk about another half mile before reaching artin's Hill Family Cementery. There is another cementery fairly close to artins Cementery- it also is in bad shape and located in the woods. Carl Franklin Carl is buried in Hartsville, Indiana. Lorena Franklin Lorena is buried in Hoopeston, Illinois in a cemetery off of HWY 1. She is buried under the name "Lorena Browning." He is 80 years old and still living at: 103 S Benson St Lexington, IL PH: (309) CELL: Curtice Franklin Curtice was living with his sister Lorena in 1920 in Summer Shade. He was marked down as "Cush." On a WW 1 Draft card with a DOB of he could only make a mark of an "X" which could mean he was not educated. The comment on the draft card leads me to believe he was not very competent-if it is indeed his draft card. The DOB is off by two/three years???? Information reveals Curtice spent many years in an institution. He is believed to have been institutionalized at Hopkinsville ental Institution. A distant relative relates that Curtis was in a mental institution in Thompsonville, KY during his life time. He is buried near Summer Shade- Kentucky. Walter F Franklin I have seen Walter with middle name of "F" also. Herbert Lewis Franklin Herbert supposedly served in WW 1 in the European campaign where he was gased by the Germans. Herbert married Idell Goodbread which was Julia Goodbread's sister. Julia was married to Carl Franklin which was Herbert's brother.two Franklin brothers married two Goodbread sisters. Herbert and Idell are buried in Fairview Cementery-Bowling Green-Kentucky.
