1 GUIDE TO HAWKS FAMILY PAPERS Scope and content note: The Hawks Family papers have been donated to PVMA from a number of sources. More recent gifts have come from Melvin Hawks, Douglas Sackman, Nancy (Hawks) Durham, and the estate of Mary Jane Hawks. Biographical notes: John 2, son of John 1 and Elizabeth Hawks was born in Windsor, CT, in He was a carpenter, served as a sergeant in King Philip s War, and was a member of the committee to build a meeting house in After the attack of 1704 he removed to Waterbury, CT, to live with his only surviving child, Martha, and her family. His papers consist of the signature portion of a legal document, and four bonds signed by him in 1699 in favor of John Pynchon. Eliezer 3, son of John 1 and Elizabeth Hawks, was born in Windsor, CT, in He came to Deerfield with the first settlers and took an active role in town affairs. His 1689 marriage to Judith Smead was the first recorded on the town register. The couple had ten children. Eliezer died in 1727; Judith died in Jan. 1718/19. His papers consist of six deeds to land in Deerfield, a power of attorney to Henry Dwight, and six documents relating to the settling of Eliezer s estate. Eliezer 5, son of Eliezer 3 and Judith (Smead) Hawks, was born in Deerfield where he lived for nearly all of his life. In 1714, he married Abigail Wells; the couple had 13 children, two of whom are mentioned below. Eliezer died in 1774; Abigail died in His papers consist of deeds and plats of land in Deerfield, and an appointment as guardian of the minor daughters of Thankful (Hawks) and Thomas Taylor. Nathaniel 6, son of Eliezer 3 and Judith (Smead) Hawks, was born in Deerfield in He served in Father Rasle s War ( ). He married Hannah Belding of Hatfield, c After she died in 1736, Nathaniel married Martha Wait of Hatfield, Mass., in Nathaniel died in 1754; his widow lived until His papers consist of three deeds to land in Deerfield, a copy of his will (1754), a probate notice (1755), and papers relating to the distribution of his estate and that of Martha Hawks (1786). Nathaniel, son of Nathaniel 6 and Judith (Smead) Hawks, was born in Deerfield in During the Revolution he sided with the Tories, and was jailed for selling beef to the British. His papers consist of deeds to land in Deerfield, receipts, an action brought against him by Ebenezer Bardwell, and a bond.

2 Martha, daughter of Nathaniel 6 and Judith (Smead) Hawks, was born in Deerfield in She is represented by an undated document. John 7, son of Eliezer 3 and Judith (Smead) Hawks, was born in Deerfield in He entered military service as a young man, and participated in numerous engagements until He also held several civil offices, including selectman. In 1730, he married Elizabeth Nims; the couple had eight children, two of whom are mentioned below. Elizabeth died in 1779; John in His papers consist of land deeds, a deed to a share in a sawmill, two letters to his wife (1759), a copy of a 1748 petition that he and Moses Scott addressed to Gov. Shirley and the Mass. House of Rep., a copy of his will, photocopies of letters, and two copies of Sketch of Col. John Hawks of Deerfield by John Stebbins Lee. Paul 12, son of Eliezer 5 and Abigail (Wells) Hawks, was born in He settled on his father s farm in the Wapping section of Deerfield, and served in the French & Indian wars. He married Lois Wait of Hatfield, Mass., c. 1765; the couple had ten children, two of whom are mentioned below. His papers consist of four deeds to land in Wapping, and a 1796 letter from his sons Eleazer and Paul, residing in Phelps, NY. Waitsil 13, son of Eliezer 5 and Abigail (Wells) Hawks, was born in Deerfield in He settled in the Turnip Yard section of Deerfield and married Anna Spofford. Waitsil died in 1811; his widow in He is represented by a 1794 deed to land in Deerfield. Zadock 14, son of Nathaniel 6 and Hannah (Belding) Hawks, was born in Deerfield in 1731, and settled on Lot 36. In 1758 he married Mary, daughter of Samuel Bardwell. Three of their ten children are mentioned below. Zadock died in 1821, his wife in His papers consist of receipts and documents relating to his work as a tanner and shoemaker, letters from St. Elizabeth, Jamaica, written by his brother, Simeon, and papers relating to the settling of Zadock s estate by his sons Zur and Zenas. Obed 18, son of John 7 and Judith (Smead) Hawks, was born in 1750 and settled on his father s farm in the Wisdom section of Deerfield. In 1781, he married Abigail Smith of Belchertown, MA; the couple had four children, two of whom are mentioned below. Obed died in 1816; his widow in His papers include land deeds, an action for debt brought against Calvin Goss, and a bequest of land to his surviving sons. Solomon 19, son of John 7 and Elizabeth (Nims) Hawks, was born in 1755, and later settled in Shelburne, MA, where he married Hulda Holloway. He died in 1834; his wife in 1816.

3 He is represented by a 1791 letter from Dr. William Stoddard Williams, signed by seven witnesses, testifying that for reasons of infirmity Solomon was not able to bear arms. Seth 21, son of Seth 11 and Elizabeth (Belding) Hawks, was born in He moved from the Turnip Yard section of Deerfield to Geneva, NY, in 1817, and died in Sodus, NY, in His widow, Tirzah (Taylor) Hawks, died there in He is represented by a judgment he won against Calvin Burt of Longmeadow, MA, in Samuel 22, son of Seth 11 and Elizabeth (Belding) Hawks, was born in Deerfield in He is represented by a mortgage to land in the East Division of Deerfield. William 23, son of Seth 11 and Esther (Wells) Hawks, was born in Deerfield in 1774, and lived in the Turnip Yard section. In 1817, he died after falling from a tree. His papers consist of an 1805 suit against Zachariah Field, and one brought against him by Hezekiah Wright Strong of Amherst, MA, in Eleazer 24, son of Paul 12 and Lois (Wait) Hawks, was born in He married Anna, daughter of Simeon Stebbins. He was living in Conway, MA, in 1787, but had moved to Phelps, NY, by He is represented by one document, a suit brought against him for debt in Quartus 26, son of Paul 12 and Lois (Wait) Hawks, was born in Deerfield in 1778 and settled on the family homestead in Wapping. He achieved prominence in ecclesiastical and civic affairs. In 1808, he married Sarah Allis of Hatfield. Quartus died in 1842; his widow in Two of their eight children are mentioned below. His papers consist of letters, a deed to land in the Long Hill division of Deerfield, a military commission and resignation, and church-related papers. Sarah (Allis) Hawks, wife of Quartus 26 was born in 1787, died in Her papers consist of letters from her husband, receipts, documents relating to her husband s estate, and a copy of her will. Alma Hawks, daughter of Quartus 26 and Sarah (Allis), was born in She is represented by four letters. Waitsil 28, son of Waitsil 13 and Anna (Spofford) Hawks, was born in He settled in Bloody Brook (now S. Deerfield) with his wife, Millicent (Blodget) Hawks. He died there in 1842; his wife predeceased him in His papers include three deeds, and a mortgage.

4 Hilkiah 30, son of Zadock 14 and Mary (Bardwell) Hawks, was born in Deerfield in He married Joanna Brooks of Deerfield in 1783; the couple had five children. Hilkiah died in 1805; Joanna in His papers consist of accounts and documents relating to his estate, Dirxia (Nims) Hawks, daughter of Joel Nims of Shelburne, was the second wife of Hilkiah Hawks 44 ( ). After his death, she married Edwin Nims in She is represented by a lease for land in Deerfield. Zur 31, son of Zadock 14 and Mary (Bardwell) Hawks, was born in Deerfield in He worked as a tanner, currier, and farmer, and lived on the north end of his father s homelot. About 1785 he married Martha, daughter of Daniel Arms. Two of their seven children are mentioned below. Zur died in 1844; his wife in His papers consist of deeds to lands in Deerfield and Charlemont, MA, misc. accounts, a summary of provisions of his will, and a chancery document excusing his debts due to insolvency. Mary, daughter of Zur 31 and Martha (Arms) Hawks, was born in She was a dwarf, known as Little Mary. She is represented by a letter from her cousin, Daniel Hawks, and a modern (undated) newspaper notice. Zenas 32, son of Zadock 14 and Mary (Bardwell) Hawks, was born in Deerfield in He lived on the south part of Lot 36 where he was a tanner, shoemaker, and farmer. In 1803, he married Rhoda Bardwell. Zenas died in 1847; his widow the following year. His papers consist of an account for the purchase of oil, and a settlement with his business partner, Lyman Frink. Asa 34, son of Asa 15 and Elizabeth (Smead) Hawks, was born in the Mill River section of Deerfield in He married Hannah Cathcart of Conway, MA, in Asa died in 1839; his widow in His papers include three documents relating to the recovery of a debt, a photo of his signature in his Bible owned by the Skinner Museum (S. Hadley), a receipt for taxes, and a business agreement with Zeeb Hawks and Frank Boyden. Zeeb 35, son of Asa 15 and Elizabeth (Smead) Hawks, was born in the Mill River section of Deerfield in He married Rebecca Saxton of Connecticut. Zeeb is represented by an action for trespass brought against William and David McKee, and a receipt.

5 John 36, son of Obed 18 and Abigail (Smith) Hawks, was born in 1783 and farmed in the Wisdom section of Deerfield. He married Emily Eastman of Amherst, MA, in John died in His papers consist of mortgage deeds, and action brought against David Wells, and a half interest in a sawmill. Charles, son of Quartus 26, and Sarah (Allis) Hawks, was born in Deerfield in He was a farmer with extensive land holdings. Charles moved to Port Royal, SC, sometime in 1862, and worked on a plantation teaching freed slaves agricultural techniques. He contracted typhoid fever and died in Dec His papers consist of 3 Deerfield land deeds, a power of attorney document, an 1864 military pass to move around Beaufort, SC, and a brief biographical sketch by Melvin Hawks. Horatio 39, son of Quartus 26, and and Sarah (Allis) Hawks, was born in Deerfield in 1819 and settled on the family homestead in the Wapping section of Deerfield. He served as a town selectman and held the rank of Captain in the Franklin Cadets and Colonel of militia. In the early 1860s, he canvassed for Colton s General Atlas in Oneida Co., NY. He married Mary Ann, daughter of Asaph Allen in While going to South Carolina to retrieve the body of his brother Charles, he died when the ship he was on sank. His papers include land deeds, shares in the Deerfield River bridge (1847), appointments as Lt. Col. and later as Col. in the Mass. State militia, an invitation to a military ball, letters from his wife, business correspondence, and his partially filled subscription notebook. Mary Ann (Allen) Hawks, wife of Horatio 39, was born in 1823 at the Bars, Deerfield. She married Horatio in 1843; they had seven sons, several of whom are mentioned below. She died in Her papers consist of more than 200 letters from her sons and their wives, her mother (Cynthia Allen), brother (William), and sister (Aurelia Allen Merrill); misc. correspondence, a fire insurance policy, and a copy of a map of her property in Wapping. Charles Allen, son of Horatio 39 and Mary Ann (Allen) Hawks, born December 1, He married Estella Bird, and later married Fannie Wilde in He resided in New Mexico with his second wife where he worked for the Atlantic & Pacific Railroad Co. He is represented by a letter from his brother Horatio, and a menu from the Windsor House, Albuquerque, NM, dated Orlando 43, son of Hilkiah 30 and Joanna (Brooks) Hawks, was born in the Wisdom section of Deerfield in He died in His papers consist of land deeds, a copy of his will, and other legal documents.

6 Alvah 45, son of Zur 31 and Martha (Arms) Hawks, was born in He lived on the family homestead where he made brooms. In 1836, he married Millicent Bardwell of Shelburne, MA. She died in 1838; Alvah died in His papers include a deed for land in Deerfield, and 3 documents relating to broom corn production. Francis 46, son of Zenas 32 and Rhoda (Bardwell) Hawks, was born in 1819 and farmed on the family homestead. He married Mary, daughter of Elijah Nims, in He died in 1897; she in He is represented by a deed to land in Deerfield. Charles 48, son of John 36 and Emily (Eastman) Hawks, was born in 1815 and farmed in the Wisdom section of Deerfield. In 1868, he moved to Ballston Spa, NY, where he ran a shoe store. His wife was Lucinda Holden. His papers consist of Deerfield land deeds, and a transaction involving his interest in a saw mill. Frederick 49, son of John 36 and Emily (Eastman) Hawks, was born in 1817, and later settled in Greenfield, MA, where he worked as a carpenter and bridge builder. In 1856, he married Mary E. Barnard of Charlemont, MA; the couple had five children. After her death in 1877, Frederick married Helen (Hoyt) Jones in His papers consist of deeds to land in Greenfield and Montague. His first wife is represented by an 1854 agreement she made with the Mayhew & Avery store in Charlemont to work as a dressmaker and milliner. Frederick Elliot, son of Frederick 49 and Mary E. (Barnard) Hawks, was born in He is represented by two letters. Theodore Childs 52, son of Horatio 39 and Mary Ann (Allen) Hawks, born April 12, 1844, died He was a house painter who lived in Greenfield. Married Minnie Loupe in 1872; they had 4 children. He is buried at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Deerfield. His papers consist of 3 letters and a postcard. Minnie (Loupe) Hawks ( ), wife of Theodore. C. Hawks. Her papers consist of a land deed, a receipt, and 2 Deerfield Academy reports. Edward Allen 53, son of Horatio 39 and Mary Ann (Allen) Hawks, born October 12, 1845, died He was a farmer who lived on Lot no. 4 in Deerfield. Married Susan Sheldon, daughter of George Sheldon, in 1871; they had 2 children. He is buried in Laurel Hill Cemetery.

7 His papers consist of 17 letters - three written by Luke Wright from Smith s Plantation, Beaufort, SC, in 1865; a recipe for Briggs Black Liniment ; and a copy of Directions for using the Patent Excelsior Tanning Process by Jay Johnson (Albany, 1864), with a signed, limited license for its use from Johnson to Edward and his brothers. Dwight Allis 54, son of Horatio 39 and Mary Ann (Allen) Hawks, born October 15, 1848, died September 5, A farmer who lived in the Wapping section of Deerfield, he is buried in Laurel Hill Cemetery. He married Ella J. Mansfield in 1879; they had 2 children. His papers consist of business correspondence and receipts, marriage license, certificate of membership in Unitarian Church a juror card dated 1905, and correspondence from his brother, Arthur Jerome Hawks. See also diaries and account book guides for other material of D.A. Hawks. Ella Mansfield Hawks, wife of Dwight A. Hawks, was born in Minnesota in 1860, and died in She is buried in Laurel Hill cemetery, Deerfield. Her papers consist of letters from her son, Paul Hawks ( ), while in the US Army at camp Devens, Ayer, MA, , and from her father, Wesson Mansfield. Rachel Hawks ( ), daughter of Dwight Allis 54 and Ella Mansfield Hawks. She graduated from North Adams Teachers College, and for many years taught home economics. She taught herself how to make lace and netted testers for high-post beds, and reproduced and sold colonial patterns for many years. Her papers include her birth certificate and obituary, correspondence, fliers regarding her netting, fabric samples from dresses she owned, and a copybook of inspirational writings Paul, son of Dwight 54 and Ella M. Hawks, born 1891, died He lived on the family homestead in the Wapping section of Deerfield, and married Jessie (Lowe) Hawks in His papers consist of a map of his property and quitclaim deed from the NY, New Haven & Hartford Railroad, a playbills from dramatic productions in which he appeared, his wedding announcement, and his resignation as rural mail carrier. For his letters written in while serving in the 7 th Provisional Training Battalion in Ayer, MA, see the papers of Ella Mansfield Hawks. Mary Jane Hawks ( ), daughter of Paul and Jessie (Lowe) Hawks. She taught in Boston and at the Bement School in Deerfield. Miss Hawks lived on the family homestead in the Wapping section of Deerfield for much of her life. Her papers consist of her birth announcement, college diplomas, genealogical notes, and misc. research notes.

8 Arthur Jerome 55, son of Horatio 39 and Mary Ann (Allen) Hawks, born 1850, died He was a farmer on the Wapping homestead and is buried in Laurel Hill cemetery. Married Sarah R. Stockbridge in 1891; they had a daughter, Mary L. His papers consist of more than 125 letters and documents, mainly from his brothers Charles, Horatio Clifford, Dwight Allis, and Louis, and a few business associates. Horatio Clifford 56, son of Horatio 39 and Mary Ann (Allen) Hawks, was born June 27, 1862, and died in Better known as Clifford by his siblings, he was a civil and electrical engineer who lived in Boston. Married Ella M. Wells and they had a daughter. He is buried in Laurel Hill Cemetery, Deerfield. His papers consist of a railroad ticket, business cards, postcards, and letters from his family. James A. 58, son of Orlando 43 and Susanna (Andrews) Hawks, was born in Deerfield in 1834 and farmed on the family homestead in the Wisdom section of Deerfield. He married Ellen Stearns of Brattleboro, VT, in He is represented by a land deed and business receipts. Emory Herman, son of James A. 58 and Ellen (Stearns) Hawks, was born in Deerfield in He never married, and died in He is represented by two land deeds and two copies of his will. Oscar Augustus, son of James A. 58 and Ellen (Stearns) Hawks, was born in Deerfield in 1869, and farmed in Shelburne, MA, on land adjacent to the Hilkiah Hawks homestead. Oscar married Gertrude Mowery of Leyden, MA, in 1904; the couple had two children. Oscar died in 1958; his wife in He is represented by two land deeds.
