The legislative branch consists of two law-making bodies the Senate and the House of Representatives. There are 29 Senators in the State one for each county. The House of Representatives has 75 voting members. The Judicial branch has two major court systems. 1) is the Utah Court of Appeals. 2) is the Utah Supreme Court. The Capitol of Utah is Salt Lake City. Page 6 Page 39

The original proposed name of the state was to be Deseret which is a Mormon Scriptural word for Honey Bee. State Mineral: Copper Utah has the world s largest open pit mine called the Bingham Canyon Mine. It is a half a mile deep and 2.5 miles wide. 12 million tons of copper have been mined from this location since Claim It! This is a fun game that everyone in the car can participate in. Before the game begins, everyone in the car agrees on a list of animals or other sites that are likely to be seen often on the stretch of road you are traveling. You all then agree on the number of points each animal (or object) that is sighted. You then determine how long the game will run. Everyone watches out for the items. Each time a person sees one of the animals or objects they try to be the first to claim it. Once it is claimed that person gets the points for that specific animal/object. For example, you may choose cows to have 2 pts, birds to have 1 point, and horses to have 5 points. If Person A sites a heard of 20 cows they quickly claim it and they get 40 points. No one else can claim that herd of cows. Use the following grid to design your score key: Animal or Object Points Each State Rock: Coal Coal has been an important source of energy since the industrial revolution. Coal has been found in 17 of Utah s 29 counties. State Tree: The Blue Spruce this tree is commonly found in the large mountain ranges of the northern half of Utah. State Vegetable: The Spanish Sweet Onion Utah farms sell about 100 million pounds of onions every single year! Keep track of your score here: This idea was submitted by Ben Hughes of Provo, UT. Thanks Ben! Page 12 Page 33

The bag had a red apple, and orange, a baggie of grapes, and a baggie of cherries. Cryptogram The section below contains a secret phrase. Each of the blanks has a number underneath it. Fill in the letters that correspond to the numbers below the blanks to solve the phrase. At the bottom of the page there is a KEY that lists all the letters from A thru Z with a box below. Each of the letters has a corresponding number to help you keep track of the coded letters that you have deciphered. Try to figure out which fruit each child picked for their snack. Red Apple Orange Grapes Red Cherries Avary Beck Karli Ava Here are your clues: Beck doesn t like fruit that is red Ava only likes Apples and Grapes Avary chose a fruit that was about the size of an adult s fist Beck had to peel his fruit before he could eat it Page 32 Page 13

14 Utah's Pre-History Coloring Activity Utah is rich in archaeological sites. Despite much of the state being in a desert climate, there have been many people and cultures that have settled in the state. The first people that lived in the area are called PaleoIndians. Paleo is the Greek word for Old. Therefore, they are known as the Old Indians. These people hunted animals found in the area such as the Mammoth. About 8,000 years ago, the people in Utah were more nomadic meaning that they stopped and lived in small villages for a period of time and then moved to other areas. Archaeologists have found numerous artifacts from this period including baskets, stone spear tips. The Anasazi and Fremont Indians lived in Utah over 2,000 years ago. They mostly lived in Caves and tents. They were farmers and hunters. Discuss the following items as a group: What is archaeology? What is a Mammoth? What kinds of tools did pre-historic people use? Page 14 Page 31

15 Dot-to-Dot Activity Brain Teaser On a long road trip your parents pass back a bucket of 23 candy bars for all of the passengers. You take seven of the candy bars. Before you pass it on to your sister, you decide that you want a few more so you take half of what s left in the bucket. You start to feel guilty right away, so you put back one third of the candy bars that you had taken out of the bucket. How many candy bars are now in the bucket? See Answer Below: 13 Candy Bars are left in the bucket Sudoku Page 30 Page 15

16 American Indians in Utah Utah had many different Native American tribes calling the land their home during its history. Some of those tribes include the Shoshone, Navajo, Goshute, Paiute, and Ute. Paper Battleship Use the game board below to play against another person in the car. The Navajo Indians were more isolated than the other tribes. They had their own distinct language and raised animals for their food. The other tribes were more like hunters and gatherers. Since the Ute Indian tribe roamed the majority of the land that makes up Utah, the state was named in their honor. There are many Ute Indian tribes on reservations in Utah even today. Ute Indians are well known for their many tribal dances. Once important tribal dance is the Sundance Ceremony. For this ceremony the dancers will go without food and water for four days. This act is believed to be spiritually renewing. DISCUSSION ITEMS: Why are Native Americans called Indians or American Indians? What traditions are important to your own culture or to your family. What is an Indian Reservation? Page 16 Page 29

17 Delicate Arch - Dot-to-Dot The Delicate Arch in Utah is one of the state s most memorable natural land form. It is a formation of sandstone whose more brittle rock was eroded away by weather, water, and wind over thousands of years. Complete the dot-to-dot to see what it looks like. Page 28 Utah City - Stereogram A stereogram is a two-dimensional picture that has a 3-D image hidden in it. To find the hidden image you must turn the page so that these instructions are at the top and then focus your eyes through the paper. Pretend that you are looking through the page to the distant background. This causes you to switch from "near point" to "far point" vision and will allow the hidden image to come into view. Put your face close to the paper. Pretend to look through the passport. Now, very slowly move back from the page and as you do so the image will come into view. This may take several tries. Please be patient, and you will be rewarded with the hidden image. The 3-D image is the name of one of Utah s Cities. Page 17

18 State Motto & Emblem The Emblem of the state of Utah is a Beehive. The beehive ties into earlier pioneer references. When the pioneers came to live in Utah there were very few things for them to use to eat or protect themselves. The pioneers had to be creative and hard working to just stay alive. Bees are known for their hard work and working together for the benefit of the entire hive or group. The early people of Utah adopted the beehive as their emblem for working together to do amazing things. The Motto for the state is very similar to the emblem. The motto is: Industry. 20 Mormons & Utah Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are often referred to as the Mormons. Mad Lib Story (Part I) Fill words into the following spaces below. Once you have words on this page, have someone read the story on the next page, filling in the blanks with your words. The Mormons were a new religious group that was started in the eastern United States. As the Mormon religion grew larger, many people began to worry about the new religion. The leader, Joseph Smith, was killed in Illinois and members of the new church were told to leave the state. In the winter of 1846 thousands of Mormons, led by Brigham Young, loaded wagons and handcarts and started a difficult trek to the west of the United States where they could be free from the unfair treatment of the people around them. The first group of Mormons arrived in what is now Salt Lake City in The Mormons were the major settlers in Utah. The Mormon Pioneers struggled to make the desert land productive and safe. Once they established a safe area in Salt Lake, the Mormons spread out to settle all over the state. Utah was a place that the Mormons felt they could practice their religion in safety. Today, Mormons still make up the largest religion in the State. Page 20 Page 25

21 Dot-to-Dot Connect the dots to discover one of the fun activities that people do in Utah Coloring Activity: Salt Lake Temple If you visit Salt Lake City during your trip through Utah, you cannot miss seeing the center-piece of the city the Salt Lake City Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The structure was built at great sacrifice by the early Mormon pioneers. It took 40 years for them to complete. Page 24 Page 21

22 Mental Math GAME RULES: All computations are to be done mentally. There is to be no writing on paper, on their hands, on the car, etc. Participants may write invisibly in the air and/or use their fingers and body parts. Talking is outlawed. Also, no calculators are allowed. THE PROCESS Read a list of computations slowly allowing everyone to make the calculations in their head. When you are finished with all of the questions, ask if anyone would like a problem repeated. Once you have finished a list of computations, tell everyone to write down their answer. Have everyone read their answer out loud to see who all got the right answer. SAMPLE COMPUTATIONS 10 / * 2 20 (The answer would be 10.) Ad Lib Story Telling Have a person in the car start a story that takes place somewhere in Utah. After just a few sentences that person then points to someone else to continue the story. Everyone continues adding to the story and then chooses someone else to take over. Keep this up as long as you can. Let your hair down and really make up some creative, funny tales! What If? Do this activity as a group in the vehicle. Answer the following What if scenario and have everyone in the car answer the question as it applies to them. Write your answers from the various rounds in the spaces provided below Alphabet Game The object of the game is to get as far as you can down the alphabet naming items that belong to a particular category. For example, someone chooses a topic such as Places, Food, Names, Cars, Instruments, Stores, Sports, Stars, Sports Stars, or Family Members. The group goes around in circle. The first person names an item within the topic that starts with the letter A. The next person has to then come up with a name or item in the category that begins with the letter B, and so on. When someone is unable to come up with a word, they fall out and the next person has to come up with a word for that same letter. If no one is able to come up with a word for that letter, then all those that were unable to come up with a word for that letter start on a new letter. However, if someone is able to come up with a word for that letter, then those that could not are out of the game. The play continues until only one person remains or the group has reached the end of the alphabet. Page 22 Page 23
