1 Governor and Mrs. John E. Weeks Anniversary Scrapbooks, 1929 and 1939 Doc 752 Introduction This collection contains congratulatory letters, cards, and s sent to Vermont Governor John E. Weeks and his wife, Hattie J. Dyer Weeks, on their 50 th wedding anniversary in 1929 and on their 60 th wedding anniversary in The items in the collection were given to the Vermont Historical Society by John E. Weeks in 1946 (acc. no , 23279, and 23280). They were formerly classified under the Dewey number 392 W418. Biographical Note John Eliakim Weeks was born to Elizabeth Dyer and Ebenezer Holland Weeks on 14 June 1854 in Salisbury, Vermont. He attended Middlebury High School and was a farmer in his younger years, having left school to assist on the family farm due to the ill health of his father. He married Hattie Jane Dyer of Salisbury on 14 October Weeks was governor of Vermont, and held numerous other public offices over the course of his career. His governorship saw Vermont suffer one of the most devastating floods in the state s history in Before becoming a candidate for governor, he was an assistant judge of Addison County, ; a member of the Vermont House of Representatives for Salisbury, ; and a Vermont senator for Addison County. He also served as state cattle commissioner, chairman of the state penal board, director of state institutions, and Commissioner of Public Welfare. He was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, John Eliakim Weeks died on 10 September Scope and Content This collection contains the contents from three scrapbooks and one loose pile of letters, cards, and s sent to Vermont Governor John E. Weeks and his wife, Hattie J. Dyer Weeks, on their 50 th wedding anniversary in 1929 and on their 60 th wedding anniversary in Two of the scrapbooks were disassembled, so only one scrapbook remains intact. The items in the other scrapbooks were moved to archival folders. The Weeks received messages from prominent politicians and citizens of their day including Franklin D. Roosevelt (as governor and president), Herbert Hoover (as president and former president) former president Calvin Coolidge, and financier J. P. Morgan. The governors of many of the states sent messages, as did prominent Vermonters and heads of organizations located in Vermont or associated with Vermont in some way.
