Academc feedom s the lbety to examne ctcally and to dscuss feely the facts n all felds of leanng and the seach fo knowledge whethe by expeence, eason, debate, o ntuton. t stands n the teachng pofesson as a Code of ethcs and pncple to nsue a cetan amount of ntegty that s necessay n any legtmate pofesson. That code s beng challenged today, fo thee s a tendency to estct academc feedom n tme of css; to ceate an othodoxy by whch all thngs can easly be measued and classfed. Attacks upon t, theefoe, ae symptoms of nsecuty of ou own status. Confomty cannot, howeve, be foced nto the feld of knowledge. Fo fee nquy, open debate, and nvestgaton of the vey bass of hs socetyand ts altenatvesae the vey thngs upon whch the schola thves. To oppose ths seach fo tuth can only ndcate a fea that ou system s nfeo to othes. Those of us who ae fmly convnced that ou "way of lfe" s supeo to othe altenatves, need not fea such nquy. The only vald bass fo the nvestgaton of hghe educaton les then, not n the fea of students questonng confomty but n a fea of ndoctnaton and peventon of the fee nteplay of deas. Ae not the colleges themselves, howeve, capable of such nvestgaton? The geneal mplcaton of suspcon and dstust, the tendency towad a confomty of deas, an nclnaton towad slence and selfcensoshp ae all poducts of mass nvestgatons by "outsde" congessonal goups. "A cat can clean tself, but dslkes beng gven a bath." Pesdent Kllan and a facultyadmnstaton commttee ae now dscussng the case of Pofesso Matn and othe pofessos 'who have admtted to beng fome communsts. The pesent stuaton, howeve, dffes fom that of Pofesso Stuk who s unde cmnal ndctment and s on leave of absence awatng tal. Pofessos Amdu and Matn have only admtted to past afflaton n the Communst Paty. f t can be shown that these men. ae of closed mnd and ae dsposed to dstotng the tuth, then should they be dsmssed; but on these gounds and no othe, be they naowmnded Republcans o leftwng adcals. n the face of the evdence befoe us we feel that these men have done nothng to depve them of the teachng postons. To do so would be to accuse them of cmes whch only a cout of law has the powe to pove. AGAN A lage step fowad was taken ths week n the feld of student autonomy. We hal t as an ndcaton that students' demands to manage the own affas and be gven oppotuntes to pove the ablty to accept esponsblty ae beng ecognzed. At a meetng wth Domtoy and House Commttee membes last Tuesday, Dean Bowdtch announced that the use of the "Dolmtoy Patols" to epot volatons of Open House ules and nfactons of domtoy egulatons wll be entely left up to the decsons of the ndvdual houses. f the domtoy does ntend to make use of the House Patol they ae assued that the only epot made wll be to the house chaman dectly. Dean Bowdtch has futhe pomsed that the House Patols wll be notfed NOT to take notce of nfngement of such ules f the ndvdual houses pefe to enfoce them on the own.
