1 The Messenger Volume 44, Issue 15 September 3, 2014 CONNECTING THE DOTS This fall we are focusing on the Road to Discipleship those church membership promises that we make when we officially join the church family. In August we focused on Prayer. In September we will turn our attention to worship. When I think of worship, I remember how someone writing a few years ago told of a school-days experience when his music teacher drew a group of black dots on a piece of white paper. None of the kids could make anything out of them. Then the teacher drew a few connecting lines, put in a few rests, and a clef at the beginning. It was then evident that the black dots took the form of a musical score. Sounding out the notes, the kids found themselves singing the Doxology: Praise God from whom all blessings flow Here in church we try to connect our life s disconnected dots. Daily living is made up of a little of this and a little of that, small events and brief moments that occur now and then along the way. And often it is difficult for us to see that these have any meaning, or if so, what the meaning is. In worship we seek a God s eye view of what we are: we try to see ourselves as we are seen by Him. This is to try to put our lives in perspective not just a scattering of random dots on a blank page, but as a sequence that really can affirm, Praise God from whom all blessings flow Each new day we live, each common task we do, becomes simply another part in the larger pattern of who we really are God s children, whom He loves and blesses. As we close out the summer days, let us think about how to build our life around GOD. When we do, then our faith increases and we become thankful for everything.
