1 301 I St SW, Quincy WA, (509) Sunday School: 9:15am Worship Service: 10:30am May 15, 2015 Passionately following Jesus Christ in Word Worship Service Community Prayer Time For the past 5 years, Diane and I have hosted a pair of Say s Phoebes to nest on the beam of our patio cover. Each Spring they return to the nest they built a few years ago and reared their fledglings. Diane is the avid bird watcher in our family. Her joy in observation of these little creatures has spilled over to me. Because of her, my attitude toward our phoebe s has gone from ambivalence to wonder. Here s what I ve learned about these amazing little birds. The male and female share the tasks of nest building and care for their young. They are experts at catching flies and insects (their primary diet). (Any bird that eliminates insects near my home is a friend of mine!) Their fledglings take approximately 2 weeks to hatch, and 2 weeks to leave the nest. It is this last fact that I am pondering today. It only takes 4 weeks for young phoebes to be born and leave their nest. One month of family and then it s over! We always feel a mixture of joy and sadness as we see the young phoebes during their flying practices. We know that they will depart within a day or two. After our phoebes have flown away, our thoughts eventually turn to the hope of their return the following spring. My perception of time has changed from when I was a young boy, to young adult, to now. In my almost 54 years, there has been no change in the length of minutes, hours, days, or years. Yet, as time passes, it seems like it is speeding away. James captures this in his epistle when he says, How do you know what will happen tomorrow? For your life is like the morning fog -- it's here a little while, then it's gone. (James 4:14)

2 With our Say s Phoebes in mind, I am thanking God today for the joy of this day. I know it will be gone in a blink, but I am going to live with joy while it lasts. And in a similar way as we hope for the return of our little birds, I am also hoping today for life with God in heaven some day. The Lord Jesus is faithful to those who put their trust in Him. Our hope will be fulfilled and time will stop speeding away. I hope you are able to find joy in this day. This is the day our Lord made. Let s rejoice and be glad in it.
